What was the Montauk monster?

I'm pretty sure that I know what it is

What has caused widespread confusion and speculation is that, while the lower jaw appears to have had a jagged row of pointy teeth, the upper jaw sports a hooked bony beak

body is stocky

digits on the hands are slim, elongate and with small, relatively straight, pale-coloured claws

lower jaw

contains a large pointed canine and four post-canines

This is clearly a dead mammal

a carnivoran

the lack of hair over most of the carcass and the supposed beak in the upper jaw - are clearly taphonomic artifacts

owes its bizarre appearance to partial decomposition

tendency for the soft tissues of the snout to be lost early on in decomposition

'beak' is just a defleshed snout region:

a dog?

a much better match: Raccoon

digits of the hands

gave this away for me

claims that the limb proportions of the Montauk carcass are unlike those of raccoons are not correct

SOUTHWEST RANCHES, Fla. - Christina Brownlow unfolds the welcome mat whenever a family of raccoons, foxes or squirrels strays into her yard.

With its canopy of fruit trees and foliage, and colorful gardens of butterflies, Brownlow's 2.5-acre property has been certified as a wildlife habitat by the National Wildlife Federation, which promotes coexistence with animals whose natural habitat is rapidly disappearing.

"How do you define a habitat? It's like a hotel, a place where wildlife can stop and rest, eat and go on their way," said Brownlow, an adult-education teacher who grew up in the Southwest Ranches, Fla., home her parents bought 40 years ago.

There are 103,000 certified wildlife habitats nationwide, with Florida leading the nation, according to Roxanne Paul, the federation's operations coordinator. In Broward, there are 1,614; most of those are backyards, but some are schools and even businesses.

as long as animals and insects are as a rule fairly adaptable, some could discover ways to thrive even in climates that for them aren't really ideal. Giant pythons capable of swallowing a dog and even an alligator are rapidly making south Florida their home, potentially threatening other southeastern states, a study said.

"Pythons are likely to colonize anywhere alligators live, including north Florida, Georgia and Louisiana," said Frank Mazzotti, University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences professor, in his two-year study.

The pythons thriving in Florida are mostly Burmese pythons from Myanmar that were brought over as pets and then turned loose in the wild.

From 2002-2005, 201 of the beasts were caught by state authorities, but in the last two years the number has more than doubled to 418

The largest python caught so far in Florida measured 16.4 feet and weighed 154 pounds.

Highly adaptable, pythons prey on cats, dogs, hares, foxes, squirrels, raccoons and even alligators

2. Get them warm. Put a heating pad under half the box or carrier so if the baby gets to warm or cold it can self regulate. At this point DO NOT FEED OR GIVE ANYTHING. Giving anything to a cold mammal or bird will kill it.

3. Now that the baby is warm you may make a solution of sugar water. 1/2c warm water: 1 tablespoon of sugar and a pinch of salt. stir and very VERY carefully gives only drops every 15 minutes. twice: then every 30 minutes twice and then watch.

DO NOT ALLOW INDIVIDUALS TO HANDLE THE ANIMAL: DO NOT EVER, EVER, EVER GIVE MILK. OH yes if hungry they will drink it and then later get diarrhea and possibly die.

clipper's remarks: This is actually kind of a big deal from a biological/public health stand point--but it really doesn't change much as far as pet owner responsibility. I hope people don't read/hear this and think they can skip Fido's rabies vaccine.

Also interesting to hear about the only known unvaccinated survivor from 2004. Previously, as I understood it, rabies was labeled the only infectious disease that, left untreated (via vaccination), had a 100% mortality rate.

While the incubation period for rabies is as long as six years in humans, it is only six months in a dog.

Only one person -- a Wisconsin girl who was put into an intentional coma in 2004 -- has ever been known to have survived rabies infection.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Many fur or fur-trimmed jackets sold in the United States as having "faux fur" -- or not labeled at all -- are actually made, at least in part, from dog fur, the Humane Society of the United States said at a Capitol Hill news conference Wednesday.

Out of 25 jackets that it tested, the group said, 24 were incorrectly labeled. In many cases, it said, tests showed the fur came from raccoon dogs, a fox-like nocturnal residents of Asian and northern European forests that bear a remarkable resemblance to raccoons.

It said it had bought the jackets in the United States from a variety of department stores, including Macy's, Burlington Coat Factory and J.C. Penney. Designers and brands included Sean John, Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger, it said. Most of the jackets tested were labeled as coming from China.
