Firefox Closer to Supporting Open-source Video Codec

Mozilla is edging closer to releasing a new version of Firefox that could increase the use of open-source video software.

Firefox 3.1, the next major release due by early next year, will likely include support for a new HTML tag specifically for embedding video in Web pages. Firefox 3.1 will also support royalty-free video codec Ogg Theora.

Video on the Web these days is a jumble of different software formats and products, with major ones including Apple's QuickTime, Microsoft's Windows Media, Adobe's Flash and RealNetworks' RealPlayer multimedia players. The plugins are free. The companies make money by selling streaming servers and encoding software.

Some see that commercial interest as potentially harmful to the Internet, since content locked up in a particular format could become inaccessible due to a change in a vendor's product development plans.

Dicky Chappell is currently working with the amazing Children of the Khmer a dance and music group from Cambodia who are working to help revitalize the cultural deficit that was left after the terrible Khmer Rouge regime left power. After bringing them over to perform at WOMAD in Charlton park (I saw them and they were wonderful), they are now performing at The World at St George's West as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Pure Digital is proving that simplicity sells. The company says it has now sold 1 million of its Flip video cameras in less than a year, and the NPD Group has listed the Flip Ultra as the top-selling video camera in June.

Simon Flemming-Wood, vice-president of marketing for Pure Digital, told me in an interview that 50 percent of Flip owners already had a camcorder. “The point-and-shoot phenomenon has been driving the growth,” he said. “Until we launched Flip there wasn’t such a thing as a point-and-shoot camcorder.”

So what’s next for the little camera that could? HD.

Pure Digital expects to have an HD product out by the end of the year (or at least an announcement of one), according to Flemming-Wood.

And in another bit of news that warms the cockles of people like myself, who are both Flip and Mac users, Pure Digital said that after recent updates from Apple, the Flip camera is now fully compatible with Mac video apps, including QuickTime, iMovie and iDVD.

This is the time of year to find a dark place and behold our very own galaxy, the Milky Way, meandering across the midnight sky. Can't find a dark place? Here's one:

This is no ordinary picture of the Milky Way; it's a doorway. Just knock and you'll be wafted away to a beach in the south of France with a dizzyingly beautiful galaxy arcing overhead. Photographer Laurent Laveder explains: "Two nights ago, I used a fisheye lens to take 16 individual pictures covering the entire sky. I then combined them to produce a Quicktime Virtual Reality view of the Milky Way."

Tip: In the VR environment, look up and spin the Milky Way. You can make your own star trails. Don't go overboard, though; it can be disturbingly realistic.
