The banking crisis is upending American dominance of the financial markets and world politics. The industrialized countries are sliding into recession, the era of turbo-capitalism is coming to an end and US military might is ebbing. Still, this is no time to gloat.

There are days when all it takes is a single speech to illustrate the decline of a world power. A face can speak volumes, as can the speaker's tone of voice, the speech itself or the audience's reaction. Kings and queens have clung to the past before and humiliated themselves in public, but this time it was merely a United States president.

George W. Bush has grown old, erratic and rosy in the eight years of his presidency. Little remains of his combativeness or his enthusiasm for physical fitness. On this sunny Tuesday morning in New York, even his hair seemed messy and unkempt, his blue suit a little baggy around the shoulders, as Bush stepped onto the stage, for the eighth time, at the United Nations General Assembly.

Police Lasso Bull On NYC's Streets

Bull Tranquilized; Dies At Animal Control Building, Police Say

NEW YORK -- It looked like an urban rodeo on the streets of New York City.

Police said a young bull made a dash for freedom through the streets of Queens Wednesday night but suddenly died before he could be taken to an animal sanctuary.

Police cars tried to steer the bull off the crowded roadways, but the several-hundred-pound animal hit and damaged a squad car.

An NYPD officer with urban cowboy skills lassoed the bull, and it was tranquilized.

New York Center for Animal Care and Control spokesman Richard Gentles said the steer died less than an hour after it was brought in.

He said veterinarians found no signs of what had caused the bull's death.

An NYPD spokesman said it's not known where the bull had been kept.

In days gone by - many days gone by - we as a nation were a buttoned-up lot, having sex but never copping to it, repressed and reactionary. Good girls didn't do it, not unless they'd signed on the dotted line, crossing the great divide between Mrs. and Miss. Good boys never did it with other boys. The bad boys who did were thrown in jail, diagnosed as sick and probed with electrodes in an effort to "cure" them. Throughout much of the country, interracial marriage was illegal, as was birth control - even for married couples in Connecticut. Fear ruled. You fornicated at your peril.

But after Alfred Kinsey, the 60s, the Pill, Stonewall and Roe vs. Wade, something changed: Now people were doing it and talking about it.

Hanna causes some flooding, flight delays in NYC

NEW YORK (AP) — Tropical Storm Hanna dropped a month's worth of rain within hours Saturday, flooding highways, delaying flights and halting the U.S. Open Tennis tournament. But officials reported no major damage.

The storm dropped three or more inches of rain on parts of the city and more in some northern suburbs, the National Weather Service said. Nearly six inches was measured in Rockland County. The metropolitan area normally gets three to four inches of rain in the entire month of September.

Wind gusts reached 40 mph, National Weather Service meteorologist John Koch said.

Stretches of several highways in the city, Long Island and Westchester County were closed because of flooding, and a fallen tree briefly closed part of the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn, police and city officials said.

Three apartment buildings in the Woodside section of Queens also grappled with some flooding, but residents didn't have to evacuate, city Office of Emergency Management spokesman Chris Gilbride said.

Why does this particular pitbull in lipstick infuriate — and scare us — so viscerally? Why does her very existence make us feel — and act — so ugly?

Palin is a symbol for everything we hoped was not true in the world anymore. We hoped that we didn't have to hide our ambition or pretend that our goals were effortlessly achieved ("I never really set out to be in public affairs, much less to run for this office," the Governor has said.) We hoped that we could be mothers without having our motherhood be our defining characteristic, as it seems to be for Palin. We hoped that we did not have to be perfect beauty queens to get to where we wanted to be in life, that our looks, good or bad, wouldn't matter. Whether or not you think it's appropriate to comment on Palin's appearance, the fact of her attractiveness exists, and is being used to her advantage by Republican sloganeers ("the hottest Governor in the coldest state," et. al).

The military translator from Queens sat beside his mother in a wheelchair in a hospital room on Manhattan’s Upper East Side on Thursday. His right leg was encased in a black boot, affixed with Velcro straps from his swollen toes to his knee. What was left of his left leg, which had been amputated at the knee, was wrapped in a snug elastic rubber stocking on which the word “stump” had been scrawled.

The man’s name is Syed Shah and he was grievously wounded in July in a bomb attack on a military convoy in Afghanistan, where he had been working as a translator for soldiers battling the Taliban. Mr. Shah is learning to walk with a prosthetic leg, though his progress is severely hindered because he cannot put any weight on his partly shattered right leg.

Yet to his family’s shock and anguish, and to his doctors’ awe, Mr. Shah is aiming to be back in Afghanistan by year’s end.

Working in Afghanistan instilled in him a sense of purpose that he had not quite felt before.

First, Governor Palin is not merely, as Jay describes her, "all-American", but hyper-American. What other country in the developed world produces beauty queens who hunt caribou and serve up a terrific moose stew? As an immigrant, I'm not saying I came to the United States purely to meet chicks like that, but it was certainly high on my list of priorities. And for the gun-totin' Miss Wasilla then to go on to become Governor while having five kids makes it an even more uniquely American story. Next to her resume, a guy who's done nothing but serve in the phony-baloney job of "community organizer" and write multiple autobiographies looks like just another creepily self-absorbed lifelong member of the full-time political class that infests every advanced democracy.

Second, it can't be in Senator Obama's interest for the punditocracy to spends its time arguing about whether the Republicans' vice-presidential pick is "even more" inexperienced than the Democrats' presidential one.

Demonstrators have marched down Queen Street in front of the controversial Boobs on Bikes parade in an effort to raise awareness of the links between pornography and violence against women and children.

Around 60 protesters carried a banner saying "Pornography fuels sexual violence against women and children" as well as signs bearing slogans such as "porn fuels rape".

A legal bid to stop the Boobs on Bike parade organised by porn distributor Steve Crow to promote his Erotica festival, failed in the High Court in Auckland yesterday.

Mr Crow, in a black Bentley convertible, today lead the parade of about 100 including topless women riding on motor bikes and tanks, and drag queens and supporters.

Thousands of spectators lined Queen Street, in some places up to 10 deep, and workers leaned out of windows and sat on balconies to watch the parade through the central city.

Pigeon in NYC Playground Painted Purple

NEW YORK - Pigeons come in many shades in New York City — but purple is typically not one of them.

That's why animal lover Joe Mora was stunned when he saw a pigeon at a Queens playground that had been painted a violet hue.

The pigeon was taken Friday to licensed wildlife rehabilitator Bobby Horvath. He said the bird is unable to fly because the feathers are completely rigid from the paint. But he says the animal is lucky its mouth or eyes didn't get stained.

American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals spokesman Joseph Pentangelo says if the bird was intentionally painted it "certainly" qualifies as animal cruelty.
