Flags by Colours

Using a list of countries generated by The World Factbook database, flags of countries fetched from Wikipedia (as of 26th May 2007) are analysed by a custom made python script to calculate the proportions of colours on each of them. That is then translated on to a piechart using another python script. The proportions of colours on all unique flags are used to finally generate a piechart of proportions of colours for all the flags combined. (note: Colours making up less than 1% may not appear)

Extending MindTouch Deki with Google App Engine

Yesterday, Google announced the general availability of Google App Engine, another option for deploying Cloud Software.

Google App Engine is a great place to create and share extensions for MindTouch Deki. By design, Deki is a distributed application platform that can be extended in any programming language, including C#, PHP, Java, Python, and the built-in DekiScript runtime. Sharing these extensions can be difficult though since you need to find a place to host them. This is were Google App Engine comes in.

Getting started is incredibly simple:

Download the App Engine SDK.
Create a new application.
Add the DekiExt.py file to it.

Créer son Gadget Google en PHP et XML - Derniers messages/commentaires de notre site

La base de tout gadget repose sur l'API Google Gadget et s'appuie l'utilisation de trois langages : XML, XHTML et JavaScript (bien que d'autres peuvent être utilisés).

Le XML va nous servir à structurer notre gadget afin que Google sache comment l'interpréter. Il s'agira donc d'un simple fichier XML qu'il vous faudra héberger quelque part (sauf sur votre ordinateur évidemment, sinon impossible que Google et d'autres usagers puissent y accéder ).

Ce fichier XML pourra soit comporter tout le code de notre gadget (ce qui ne sera pas le cas dans ce tutoriel), soit faire appel à d'autres pages pour recevoir des informations.

Le XHTML va servir à mettre en place la partie "statique" du gadget, laissant le PHP, le JavaScript, le Python se charger de la partie "dynamique".

New evidence of the earliest known ritual behaviour

The python-head rock in the Tsodilo Hills, Botswana

Evidence for possibly the earliest known ritual activity has been uncovered in Ngamiland, Botswana. Archæologists investigating the Tsodilo Hills there found a secluded cave, the “Rhino Cave”, next to a rock resembling a python’s head. Hundreds of man-made indentations peppered the rock, known to the San (Bushmen) as the “Rock that Whispers”.

A test pit dug in front of the python simulacrum revealed many stones that had been used to make the indentations. Together with these tools, some of which were over 70,000 years old, more than 13,000 artefacts were unearthed, including burnt spearheads and possible ritual articles. The rock’s natural pythonesque appearance had been enhanced by human carving and grinding – the python is a key figure in San mythology.

statically typed language

A language in which types are fixed at compile time. Most statically typed languages enforce this by requiring you to declare all variables with their datatypes before using them. Java and C are statically typed languages.

dynamically typed language

A language in which types are discovered at execution time; the opposite of statically typed. VBScript and Python are dynamically typed, because they figure out what type a variable is when you first assign it a value.

strongly typed language

A language in which types are always enforced. Java and Python are strongly typed. If you have an integer, you can't treat it like a string without explicitly converting it.

weakly typed language

A language in which types may be ignored; the opposite of strongly typed. VBScript is weakly typed. In VBScript, you can concatenate the string '12' and the integer 3 to get the string '123', then treat that as the integer 123, all without any explicit conversion.

Culturally inspired, our Tikar Elephant Mask makes a striking, unique centerpiece.

A unique centerpiece, our beaded Tikar mask is distinctive in design with a raffia woven base. Meticulously carved and painstakingly detailed with intricate beadwork and cowry shells. The Tikar are a grouping of ethnic people who reside mainly in the northwest of Cameroon, who are known for their beaded masks, which form an important part of their culture.

In traditional ceremonies, the masks would conceal the top of the head, rather than cover the face, and were worn as an object of prestige and part of ceremonial regalia. The buffalo and elephant masks represented strength, and the spider mask, intelligence, but, most of the meanings are now lost. In traditional ceremonies, the buffalo would join the leopard, elephant, and two-headed python as an image of royal power which is frequently found in the decoration of works from the region.

Life of Brian Still Banned

Faith-based censorship is an effective means of social control when a religion dominates a society, but in the West where religions have lost their political status it's just a waste of time. Apparently, though, it's a waste of time that makes at least some believers feel more important and respected because they won't stop. They still want to control the expression of ideas they disapprove of.

Case in point is the town of Aberystwyth where Monty Python's 1979 film Life of Brian is still banned. They weren't the only place to ban the film in a fit of Christian censorship, but they may be the last one left — and the local vicar thinks that's just grand. He seems to believe strongly in censoring material he personally finds blasphemous and offensive.

It's worth noting that Stuart Bell never actually gives an explanation for why the film should be banned. He sort of explains why it offends him, though that explanation is weak since he hasn't seen it.
