By now, the pattern is familiar. Palin responds to a question she fears reveals something she wants to conceal and lies:

COURIC: Have you ever been involved with any negotiations, for example, with the Russians?

PALIN: We have trade missions back and forth. We -- we do -- it's very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where -- where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border. It is -- from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there.

There is no evidence of her conducting any trade missions with Russia:

I spent some time on the Governor's Web site seeking more details about her trade negotiations with Russia. There's a press release about Gov. Palin's meeting with a trade mission from the Yukon, but nothing about Russia anywhere in the archives.

Candidates Mull ‘Evil Empire’

NASHVILLE, Tennessee — The U.S. presidential candidates assailed Russia in their latest debate, with Democrat Barack Obama saying Moscow had engaged in “evil” behavior and Republican John McCain saying it was “maybe” an evil empire.

In Tuesday’s debate, the two candidates were asked the barbed question, “Do you think that Russia under Vladimir Putin is an evil empire?” and were asked to reply “yes” or “no.”

Both stopped short of saying “yes” or “no” but made plain that they have problems with Russia.

“I think they’ve engaged in an evil behavior, and I think that it is important that we understand they’re not the old Soviet Union, but they still have nationalist impulses that I think are very dangerous,” Obama said.

“Maybe,” McCain answered, adding, “If I say yes, then that means that we’re reigniting the old Cold War. If I say no, it ignores their behavior.”

I hope he doesn't shoot this one

Other Palinisms are not so tractable. From the Charlie Gibson interview:

I know that John McCain will do that and I, as his vice president, families we are blessed with that vote of the American people and are elected to serve and are sworn in on January 20, that will be our top priority is to defend the American people.

I had to give up. This sentence is not for diagramming lightweights

To me, it's not English—it's a collection of words strung together to elicit a reaction

It requires not a diagram but a selection of push buttons.

Then he was pictured at the wheel of a massive racing truck and shooting dead a tiger in the Siberian forest.

He has also appeared operating a train, sailing on a submarine and co-piloting a fighter jet.

Now Vladimir Putin - the world's most manly leader - has released yet another display of his own masculinity: a DVD entitled 'Let's learn judo with Vladimir Putin'.

Today he presented the instructional judo DVD that shows him throwing an opponent to the mat.

'Let's Learn Judo with Vladimir Putin' is the product of collaboration between Putin - a black belt - and former World and Olympic judo champion Yasuhiro Yamashita.

At a nighttime presentation minutes into his 56th birthday, Putin said the title was little more than an 'advertising trick'. Anyone who watches it 'will be learning not from your humble servant but from real geniuses' of the martial art, he said.

Putin is a one-time judo champion of his home city St. Petersburg

Reporters weren't permitted to wander around inside Coachman Park in Clearwater to talk to Palin's audience, the St. Petersburg Times reported.

When reporters tried to leave the designated press area and head to where the crowd was seated, an escort would dart out, confront him or her and say, "Can I help you?" and turn the person around, Times staff writer Eileen Schulte wrote on the paper's Web site. When one reporter asked an escort, who would not give her name, why the press wasn't allowed to mingle, she said that in the past, negative things had been written, Schulte reported.

Putin warns Ukraine over arms

"If this is confirmed, this will be what I have called a crime, because this is termed 'direct involvement in an armed conflict', pitting the Russian and Ukrainian peoples against each other," he added.

If Russia received proof of Ukraine's military involvement, Moscow would "build its relations accordingly with those who allowed this to happen", he said.

Ms Tymoshenko said she was confident that "such facts [would] not be confirmed".

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has expressed outrage at reports that Ukraine supplied arms and technicians to Georgia before the recent war.

The two prime ministers reportedly talked for three hours

After talks near Moscow with his Ukrainian counterpart Yulia Tymoshenko, he said that if such reports were confirmed, they constituted a "crime".

Ms Tymoshenko said she was confident the reports would prove unfounded.

The two premiers agreed to soften the blow of switching to market rates for supplying Russian gas to Ukraine.

While they did not mention any figures at their meeting, they signed an energy memorandum meant to act as the basis for future gas negotiations.

"The parties confirmed their willingness to establish a gradual transition to market prices within three years," said Ms Tymoshenko.

"We have come to the conclusion that our countries do not need shock therapy."

Correspondents say Mr Putin is aware that Mrs Tymoshenko is not responsible for Ukraine's defence policy
