Animal Kingdom's Odd Couples

Three-month-old tiger cub Zoya, rejected by her mother, plays with Alsatian puppy Frida, who's the same age, in a special enclosure at the Warsaw Zoo Aug. 13, 2008. The dog, owned by a zoo employee, was introduced to the tiger so that she could have a companion for the next few months.

Isabella, a yellow lab at the Safari Zoological Park east of Caney, Kan., has adopted three white tiger cubs that were abandoned by their mother in this July 30, 2008, photo.

Feisty puppy scares off 3 bears in backyard in New Jersey

A seven-kilogram cocker spaniel-poodle mix named Pawlee scared off a mother bear and her two cubs Sunday morning after they strayed into his owners' backyard in New Jersey.

It's unknown if Pawlee's bark is worse than his bite, but the dog's scare tactics worked just fine.

These three bears got the hint and took off.

The dog's owners had just let him out for the morning when he ran into the yard and started "barking his head off."

His barking drove the two cubs up a tree, and they eventually climbed down and hopped over a fence with their mother and retreated into the woods.

Fran Osiason says her nine-year-old son, Jacob, went outside to see what the commotion was about and came running back in to report there were bears in the yard.

She was worried that the mother bear would come after Pawlee to protect her cubs, but the pugnacious pup, just eight months old, had other plans.

"He's a little fur ball," she said.

One problem is that the dog starts copying the cat. When very often in 'cat free' homes, the dog will copy (for better or worse) the owner.

He took his own dog, Maggie, who was rescued from a puppy mill, to the Center City news conference.

Rendell said the "brutal killing" of 80 dogs at two licensed kennels in Berks County had shed light on the horrible but legal practice of euthanizing dogs by shooting them.

"Dogs who live in this type of kennel are valued only for the sale price of their offspring," he said at a news conference at a Center City dog park. The owners "would shoot the dogs rather than pay for vet care."

The unemployed Khwela received kudos from Witness readers after he alerted the police recently to the pup’s plight after he heard him whimpering in a covered grave at Camps Drift.

The puppy’s little body had been pierced with two assegais before he was buried alive with dead chickens, candles, a mirror and clothing. It is believed that the burial formed part of a muthi-related ritual.

Khwela, hailed as “Bernard the Great” by a reader commenting on the rescue on the Witness website, was offered a job by a construction company, said Maureen Vida of the SPCA yesterday.

She did not know which construction company employed him, but said Khwela told them he was starting work this week. The Witness was unable to contact Khwela yesterday.

Khwela also received a hamper of food and blankets from the SPCA in gratitude for his good deed, and donations of money from the public. He has also been given dog food and veterinary assistance for his own dogs.

CANEY, Kan. - A dog at a southeast Kansas zoo has adopted three tiger cubs abandoned by their mother. Safari Zoological Park owner Tom Harvey said the tiger cubs were born Sunday, but the mother had problems with them.

A day later, the mother stopped caring for them. Harvey said the cubs were wandering around, trying to find their birth mother, who wouldn't pay attention to them. That's when the cubs were put in the care of a golden retriever, Harvey said.

Puppies take about the same amount of time as tiger cubs to develop, and Harvey said the adoptive mother just recently weaned her own puppies.

The mother doesn't know the difference, Harvey said. He said the adopted mother licks, cleans and feeds the cubs.

Hope on wheels

Hope, the two-legged Maltese puppy, gets around by using a specially-designed device which features wheels from a model airplane.

Hope was born with only two legs and has small wriggling nubs where her front legs should be. The energetic pup uses her hind legs to boost her body forward onto her chest and operate the wheeled prosthetic limbs.

The wheeled device was created by orthotist David Turnbill free of charge with makeshift shoulder joints connected to model airplane wheels.
