The homeland security mania has invited some startling abuses of police power, but we have yet to hear of any more knuckle-headed than one in Maryland. There, the State Police are sheepishly tracking down 53 innocent people to let them know they were entered as suspected terrorists on state and federal databases — for the Orwellian offense of engaging in peaceful protest.

The citizens had merely joined gatherings opposed to the Iraq war and capital punishment. Yet they were listed as terrorists three years ago on criminal intelligence rolls. “On the contrary, the groups were determined not to violate the law,” Stephen Sachs, the former Maryland attorney general, took pains to point out in a blistering report concluding that the runaway program violated constitutional rights and federal regulations.

Clueless smugglers find 'gold' is uranium

All that glisters is not gold. In some cases it is depleted uranium.

Three Chinese men found this out when they came across a lump of shiny metal in a scrapyard in Bishkek, in neighbouring Kyrgyzstan, last year.

The men smuggled the 274kg (604lb) object across the border and into China and hid it in the home of the father-in-law of one of the men in the westernmost Xinjiang region.

One thing puzzled them. At night, a report on a local government website said, “they were surprised that, when the lights went out, the treasure sparkled and glittered”.

Criminal gran gets knitting punishment

An 89-year-old grandmother who went on a tyre-wrecking spree in her street has been ordered to knit jumpers for her victims.

Heidi Kohl, from western Germany, was arrested after one neighbour spotted her slashing the tyres on a car. She later confessed that she had resorted to drastic measures after becoming "fed up" with so many drivers parking in her neighbourhood.

Kohl was initially told that she would be fined for her behaviour, but authorities came up with the more unusual punishment after the woman claimed she would be unable to pay.

A spokeswoman confirmed: "When she's knitted the sweaters, then the matter will be over for us."

Kohl is believed to have wrecked 50 tyres in total. Prosecutors have said that she will not offend again as she has since been moved to a retirement home.

Mercy Ministries bills itself as a Christian-based rehabilitation home for “young women who are seeking freedom from life-controlling problems.” It was founded by Nancy Alcorn in 1983.

There is a riveting untold story about the ministry in the Nashville Scene, focusing on Jennifer Wynne, one of the girls admitted into the house.

How bad was the place?

Entrusting their recovery to untrained counselors barely out of Bible college, the Mercy girls said that exorcisms and speaking in tongues took the place of treatment, that expulsion was the punishment for peeing without permission, and that DVDs featuring the testimony of former gays were peddled as a cure for lesbianism.

Instead of the psychiatric treatment that was needed, Mercy offered prayer.

The girls suffered as a result.

For Mercy, there is no nuance between bulimia, depression, self-mutilation, and unplanned pregnancies. It is all just symptomatic of the Devil’s work.

One in five teachers would like to see the cane brought back in schools to help discipline unruly children, a survey has revealed.

They would back the return of corporal punishment because they have had enough of deteriorating pupil behaviour.

The research comes amid rising concern about poorly behaved children who routinely flout authority both in school and out.

Support was strongest among secondary school teachers, with 22 per cent backing the idea compared to 16 per cent of primary school teachers.

Corporal punishment was banned in state schools in 1986 but remained legal in independent schools until 1998.

A survey, carried out by FDS International for the Times Educational Supplement in 2000, showed that 51 per cent of parents favoured the return of the cane, with 47 per cent against.

But only a naive wanker would expect the Emperor of America, Mr. Justice Anthony Kennedy, or any of the other four Justices who joined his opinion for the majority, to actually change their votes. At most, those five will permit limited supplemental briefing by both sides. There won't be additional oral argument. And in short order, Justice Kennedy will write a short supplemental opinion. It will announce the denial of rehearing. It will try to explain why the laws that America, through its Congress and president, has chosen to apply to its own uniformed sons and daughters are nevertheless absolutely meaningless data points in the SCOTUS' determination of America's "evolving standards of decency."

On July 6, 2008, I wrote at my usual tedious length about the Supreme Court's embarrassing mistake in the case overturning Louisiana's capital sentence for a child rapist, Louisiana v. Kennedy, in which Justice Kennedy, writing for a five-Justice majority

insisted that neither any other state nor the federal government permitted the death penalty for child rapists. That was a major premise for their holding that "evolving standards of decency" under their "living, breathing" version of the Eighth Amendment no longer permitted Louisiana's death sentence for convicted child rapist Patrick Kennedy. And that statement was absolutely wrong: Congress and the president had recently acted to amend the Uniform Code of Military Justice to permit the death penalty for exactly that crime.

Even the editorial board of the Washington Post had urged the Supreme Court to grant rehearing in the case to address this enormous blunder. Here's what I predicted, however:

'Fictional' Unpaid Gas Bill Ruins Credit Rating of Self Employed Brit

Self-employed property manager Sean Powell is the latest Brit to fall victim to the complicated administration systems favoured by large corporations.

Last year, through no fault of his own, he saw his credit report reduced to tatters and his once-successful business put at risk all because of an administration error made by utilities giant British Gas.

Powell’s debacle started in March last year when, to his surprise, he received a £300 ($530) gas bill. While for many homeowners this wouldn’t be anything out of the ordinary, Mr Powell’s central London flat is heated solely by oil. There isn’t a single gas meter, appliance or connection in the property and, according to the managing agent, there never has been.

Baffled by the bill, Powell wrote to British Gas explaining the error. However, they did nothing to rectify the situation and soon he was faced with a barrage of demands for payment from his supposed gas provider and debt collectors acting on their behalf.

Naked man falls to death after police hit him with Taser gun

A naked man has fallen to his death after police shocked him with a Taser stun gun as he stood on a building ledge.

Inman Morales, 35, was standing naked and distraught on the first floor ledge of a New York building when a police officer fired the gun at him.

The shock caused Mr Morales to fall almost 10 foot to the ground, suffering serious head trauma when he hit the pavement. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Officials said that, since the incident on Wednesday, a lieutenant in the New York Police Department has been stripped of his gun and badge, and the officer who fired the gun has been placed on administrative duty.

The man's death has once again raised the controversial subject of the use of Taser guns by police.

The pistol-shaped weapons fire barbs as far as 35 feet and can deliver a 50,000 volt shock capable of immobilising people.
