Between September and October 2008, the Total U.S. National Debt increased by nearly one trillion dollars, or about 10% of the outstanding debt. Most of this increase is due to public borrowing to finance the Wall Street Bailout plan. The additional borrowing on top of the mandatory increases in programs such as Social Security (which will increase payout by 5.8% in January of 2009) represents a significant loss in financial flexibility which makes the problem of persistent deficit spending even more difficult to solve.

The health care overhaul bill produced by House Democrats would impose an array of new taxes, fees and government mandates on major players in the health industry, including insurers, doctors and drugs and medical devices makers.

News that Senator Max Baucus’ Finance Committee deal on health care financing excluded a public option sent health insurance stocks soaring Tuesday.

Shares of U.S. health insurers rose broadly on Tuesday on hopes a health reform bill would not include a government-run option, which has drawn strong opposition from insurers who fear it would destroy the private marketplace.

The S&P Managed Health Care index of large U.S. health insurers closed 6.5 percent higher.

Aetna rose 12.6 percent, Coventry was up 12.7 percent and Cigna was 7.7 percent higher, all on the New York Stock Exchange. Centene rose 7.9 percent.

Health insurance executives who have poured money into the campaign coffers of Blue Dogs, Max Baucus, Chuck Grassley, Kent Conrad, Joe Lieberman and Susan Collins

After months of holding their tongues, insurance industry officials launched a very public attack on the Senate Finance bill Sunday with an analysis that says insurance reform will increase premiums faster than doing nothing. The industry, which didn’t like last week’s CBO report, bought its own analysis and will tout the PricewaterhouseCoopers findings in new ads. The developments have the White House and Finance Chairman Baucus on the defensive. This could be a turning point that the White House and Baucus worked hard to avoid – when industry begins to publicly oppose Democratic reforms. With this report, insurers take a half step in that direction and put Democrats in a dangerous place. If insurers inspire other dissatisfied groups – everyone from docs to hospitals – to take a more aggressive approach in their legislative demands, Democrats could quickly find themselves playing defense against some of the town’s best funded groups when they should be playing offense to pass a bill.

• Strategic aims include tackling 'public disquiet'

The nuclear industry funds the special armed police force which guards its installations across the UK, and secret documents, seen by the Guardian, show the 750-strong force is authorised to carry out covert intelligence operations against anti-nuclear protesters, one of its main targets.

The nuclear industry will pay £57m this year to finance the Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC)

The CNC has spent £1.4m on weapons and ammunition in the past three years

They patrol outside nuclear plants, with their jurisdiction stretching to three miles beyond the perimeter of the installations. They have the same powers as any other British police officer and can, for instance, arrest and stop and search people.

The body that regulates the CNC is also funded by the nuclear industry.

We are into the endgame on health care with the passage (finally) of a health care reform bill by the Senate Finance Committee. Conservatives are hoping the public will rise up against a successful conclusion of this process, spurred by conservatives’ unrelenting attacks on any and all health care efforts. But the public is unlikely to do so. In fact, they say, by 61-29, that they will be disappointed if health care reform isn’t passed by the end of this year.

Since taking office, President Obama has sanctioned at least 41 Central Intelligence Agency(C.I.A.) drone strikes in Pakistan that have killed between 326 and 538 people, many of them, critics say, "innocent bystanders, including children," according to reliable reports. The drone is a remotely controlled, unmanned aircraft.

Based on a study just completed by the non-profit, New America Foundation of Washington, D.C., "the number of drone strikes has risen dramatically since Obama became President," Mayer reports.

In fact, the first two strikes took place on Jan. 23, the President's third day in office and the second of these hit the wrong house, that of a pro-government tribal leader that killed his entire family, including three children, one just five years of age.

Democrats work to finalize health legislation

White House officials and Senate Democrats are meeting in private to iron out differences on a health care overhaul that could affect every American. In public, they're united by a common enemy: the health insurance industry.

The Finance Committee's 10-year, $829 billion bill would remake the U.S. health care system from top to bottom, for the first time making health insurance a requirement for most Americans, forcing insurance companies to take all comers and providing subsidies to help lower-income people buy coverage.

Looking ahead to negotiations with the House, senators were also thinking about how to reconcile the very different methods the two chambers use to pay for their health bills. The House legislation would raise taxes on high earners, whereas the Senate Finance bill would tax high-value health insurance plans.

"Of course, that will cost money," Durbin said, adding that he did not know where it would come from.
