Capitalism Exploits the Poor

economic historian Gregory Clark points out that if you look at real returns to land (rental rates), they have fluctuated but remain virtually unchanged. The same holds true for capital (interest rates). Real wages for unskilled workers, meanwhile, have exploded.

Sources of mortality have also fallen: infant mortality and maternal mortality are miniscule fractions of what they used to be, and life expectancy has increased radically.

Secret copyright treaty leaks. It's bad. Very bad.

The internet chapter of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, a secret copyright treaty whose text Obama's administration refused to disclose due to "national security" concerns, has leaked. It's bad. It says:

* That ISPs have to proactively police copyright on user-contributed material. This means that it will be impossible

hiring enough lawyers to ensure that the mountain of material uploaded every second isn't infringing will exceed any hope of profitability.

* That ISPs have to cut off the Internet access of accused copyright infringers or face liability.

* That the whole world must adopt US-style "notice-and-takedown" rules that require ISPs to remove any material that is accused -- again, without evidence or trial -- of infringing copyright. This has proved a disaster in the US and other countries, where it provides an easy means of censoring material, just by accusing it of infringing copyright.

Michigan Raid Reveals a Mysterious Islamic Sect

The documents note the group was evicted from its Detroit mosque earlier this year because it failed to pay property taxes.

The precise origins of the Ummahs are unclear. Its national leader is Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, a militant former civil rights activist also known as H. Rap Brown. In 2002, he was convicted of fatally shooting two Georgia police officers. He is serving a life sentence at a federal prison.

Later today, federal authorities are expected to explain more details behind Wednesday's raid of a suburban Detroit warehouse that revealed a mysterious Islamic sect that apparently seeks to establish an independent state based on Sharia law on American soil.

Yesterday's raid targeted Detroit-area members of the Ummah, an Islamic sect comprised mainly of American-born blacks who converted to the religion while serving prison sentences. During the raid, four of the group's members surrendered to federal authorities and were swiftly arrested. The group's local iman, Luqman Ameen Abdullah, also known as Christopher Thomas, apparently directed a weapon at authorities, and was fatally shot. Some suspects remain at large. The authorities have charged at least 11 men with an assortment of alleged crimes, including possession of firearms by a convicted felon, mail fraud, and conspiring to receive and sell stolen goods.

If Lenders Say ‘The Dog Ate Your Mortgage’

FOR decades, when troubled homeowners and banks battled over delinquent mortgages, it wasn’t a contest. Homes went into foreclosure, and lenders took control of the property.

On top of that, courts rubber-stamped the array of foreclosure charges that lenders heaped onto borrowers and took banks at their word when the lenders said they owned the mortgage notes underlying troubled properties.

In other words, with lenders in the driver’s seat, borrowers were run over, more often than not. Of course, errant borrowers hardly deserve sympathy from bankers or anyone else, and banks are well within their rights to try to protect their financial interests.

But if our current financial crisis has taught us anything, it is that many borrowers entered into mortgage agreements without a clear understanding of the debt they were incurring. And banks often lacked a clear understanding of whether all those borrowers could really repay their loans.

The city of St. Louis has agreed to pay $80,000 for censoring the speech of Christians during a "gay" pride festival on city property, according to the Alliance Defense Fund.

The law organization represented the plaintiffs in a case brought over the censorship, and it announced yesterday it had voluntarily sought dismissal of the lawsuit after the city's offending policy had been struck down and the city agreed to pay damages and costs of the case.

"Christian groups shouldn't be banned from public areas for expressing their beliefs," said Rick Nelson of the American Liberties Institute, who served as lead counsel in the case and is allied with the ADF.

If people expect to go faster, people should also expect inequitable production and delivery of the transportation resource

Looking at the absurdity that you have more rights to drive a huge car at high speeds on public property than you do to drive a small bicycle at gentle speeds, it's hard to argue with his point. Looking at the billions of dollars spent by our government to wage war and curb civil liberties on behalf of a few oil companies, it's hard not to argue on behalf of his point.
