But there is another — quite different — result of all this incessant updating: a culture of people who know much more about themselves. Many of the avid Twitterers, Flickrers and Facebook users I interviewed described an unexpected side-effect of constant self-disclosure. The act of stopping several times a day to observe what you’re feeling or thinking can become, after weeks and weeks, a sort of philosophical act. It’s like the Greek dictum to “know thyself,” or the therapeutic concept of mindfulness. (Indeed, the question that floats eternally at the top of Twitter’s Web site — “What are you doing?” — can come to seem existentially freighted. What are you doing?) Having an audience can make the self-reflection even more acute, since, as my interviewees noted, they’re trying to describe their activities in a way that is not only accurate but also interesting to others: the status update as a literary form.

In essence, Facebook users didn’t think they wanted constant, up-to-the-minute updates on what other people are doing. Yet when they experienced this sort of omnipresent knowledge, they found it intriguing and addictive. Why?

Social scientists have a name for this sort of incessant online contact. They call it “ambient awareness.” It is, they say, very much like being physically near someone and picking up on his mood through the little things he does — body language, sighs, stray comments — out of the corner of your eye.

No doubt Mr Blair did not mean this. But he clearly did not mean tolerance, fair-mindedness, a deep love of independence and privacy, a sense that each individual is a volunteer in society, with whom no-one has a right to interfere, and certainly not with the aim of improving him or even protecting him against his will. Mr Blair did not mean this because every illiberal instinct of his politician's body drives him in the opposite direction - the direction of ID cards, limitations on free speech, more CCTV cameras, more control, less liberty, more interference, diminution of rights, ignoring of Parliament and public opinion, and generally more corralling of the national herd into situations amenable to policing.

Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin attended five colleges in six years before graduating from the University of Idaho in 1987.

Federal privacy laws prohibit the schools from disclosing her grades, and none of the schools contacted by The Associated Press could say why she transferred. There was no indication any of them were contacted as part of the background investigation of Palin by presidential candidate John McCain's campaign.

From North Idaho College, Palin transferred 70 miles south to the University of Idaho, the state's flagship institution. She majored in journalism with an emphasis in broadcast news. She attended Idaho, whose mascot is the Vandals, from fall 1984 to spring 1985.

The McCain campaign did not have an immediate comment on Palin's higher education record.

Tree lover brings out the chopper

A NEIGHBOURHOOD battle reached new heights yesterday when a Hawthorn resident paid $8000 to have a tree flown into his back yard by helicopter.

And Graeme Alderman plans to send the bill to the bloke over the back fence.

He says his neighbour cut down his old tree.

Mr Alderman said that the neighbour took the liberty of pruning the original 10.5m lilly pilly he planted 25 years ago down to a leafless 2.5m stump.

"He couldn't possibly have thought it was his. It was about 1.8m-2m into my block.

Not wanting to wait 25 years to regain his privacy, Mr Alderman called in Speciality Trees to deliver an established tree.

"It was pretty special. We hadn't organised a helicopter tree drop before," said project co-ordinator Ben Scoble, of Speciality Trees.

The 4.5m weeping lilly pilly cost $3000 to buy, $4000 to fly and $1000 to plant.

It will fill a gaping hole left by an allegedly overzealous new man on the block.

There is something quite strange for someone bored by details of the privacy of others, to see the media, starting with those "serious", enjoyed with things, which are nothing else than gossip. What is surprising is the implacable march of something incredibly reactionary and normalizer.

It's not only that we know that this one (John Edwards) has cheated on his wife with this one, nor even that we know when and how... It's not only that we know that the daughter of this other one (Sarah Palin) is pregnant before to be married or that her husband was arrested more than 20 years ago for driving under the influence of alcohol... It's not only that there are people to peel biographies, investigate, reveal or create "scandals", and others to buy them, "friends" to be paid for their secrets and bargain their betrayal... in short, a whole system implying

Jeff Kirsch, Vice President of D.C.-based NGO Fight Crime: Invest in Kids, said that they have recently started to use the internet as a background-checking tool. “We’re not looking for anything specific, but rather seeing if there are any ‘red flags’ that should concern us, or tell us something that should be checked out with the applicant. Raving about drugs and alcohol, for example, would be a problem for us.”

Needless to say, it’s really up to you to decide how private you need and want to be. If you are applying for a job with the government or a very conservative bank, for example, you may have greater concerns than others about employers or co-workers viewing your profile and pictures. But even if you're not that concerned, there's really no way to justify missing out on an opportunity because you refuse to take down that profile pic of you killing a keg stand—just be smart and utilize those privacy settings!

Furniture chain ordered to stop collecting driver info

A national furniture chain is no longer allowed to collect numbers from driver's licences and licence plates when customers pick up merchandise at its stores in Alberta, according to a ruling released Wednesday by the province's information and privacy commissioner.

Leon's Furniture has also been ordered to destroy driver's licence and plate information it has collected from other customers for the same reason.

The ruling stems from a complaint by a woman who went to a Leon's Furniture store in Calgary to pick up furniture for her daughter in January 2007.

The daughter had ordered the furniture, and paid deposit the previous month. At the time of purchase, the younger woman indicated her mother would be picking up the item when it arrived.

When the woman asked why she had to provide the information, she was told it was store policy.

Today there was a comic book in my mail, sent by Google and drawn by no less than Scott McCloud, creator of the classic Understanding Comics. Within the 38 pages, which I’ve scanned and put up, in very readable format Google gives the technical details into a project of theirs: an open source browser called Google Chrome. The book points to www.google.com/chrome, but I can’t see anything live there yet. In a nut-shell, here’s what the comic announces Google Chrome to be:

Google Chrome is Google’s open source browser project.

The browser will include a JavaScript Virtual Machine called V8

Google Chrome will use special tabs.

The browser has an address bar with auto-completion features

As a default homepage Chrome presents you with a kind of “speed dial” feature, similar to the one of Opera.

Chrome has a privacy mode; Google says you can create an “incognito” window “and nothing that occurs in that window is ever logged on your computer.”
