But there is another — quite different — result of all this incessant updating: a culture of people who know much more about themselves. Many of the avid Twitterers, Flickrers and Facebook users I interviewed described an unexpected side-effect of constant self-disclosure. The act of stopping several times a day to observe what you’re feeling or thinking can become, after weeks and weeks, a sort of philosophical act. It’s like the Greek dictum to “know thyself,” or the therapeutic concept of mindfulness. (Indeed, the question that floats eternally at the top of Twitter’s Web site — “What are you doing?” — can come to seem existentially freighted. What are you doing?) Having an audience can make the self-reflection even more acute, since, as my interviewees noted, they’re trying to describe their activities in a way that is not only accurate but also interesting to others: the status update as a literary form.

Clip Source: www.nytimes.com

On Sept. 5, 2006, <A title="More articles about Mark E. It catalyzed a massive boom in the site’s growth. A few weeks after the News Feed imbroglio, Zuckerberg opened the site to the general public (previously, only students could join), and it grew quickly; today, it has 100 million users

Clip Source: www.nytimes.com

In essence, Facebook users didn’t think they wanted constant, up-to-the-minute updates on what other people are doing. Yet when they experienced this sort of omnipresent knowledge, they found it intriguing and addictive. Why?

Social scientists have a name for this sort of incessant online contact. They call it “ambient awareness.” It is, they say, very much like being physically near someone and picking up on his mood through the little things he does — body language, sighs, stray comments — out of the corner of your eye.

Tags: brave new world, digital intimacy

<clipSource>http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/07/magazine/07awareness-t.html?ex=1378353600&en=2feb7263ab2a0bd4&ei=5124</clipSource>

Blair's authoritarianism

clipped by: montypaul
clipper's remarks: Blair's political instincts drive him towards authoritarianism - id cards, surveillance, control

Clip Source: www.guardian.co.uk

No doubt Mr Blair did not mean this. But he clearly did not mean tolerance, fair-mindedness, a deep love of independence and privacy, a sense that each individual is a volunteer in society, with whom no-one has a right to interfere, and certainly not with the aim of improving him or even protecting him against his will. Mr Blair did not mean this because every illiberal instinct of his politician's body drives him in the opposite direction - the direction of ID cards, limitations on free speech, more CCTV cameras, more control, less liberty, more interference, diminution of rights, ignoring of Parliament and public opinion, and generally more corralling of the national herd into situations amenable to policing.

Tags: uk, democracy, olitics, blair, authoritarian, autocracy

<clipSource>http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2006/may/19/onbritishnessandblairishnes</clipSource>

Palin attended five colleges in six years

clipped by: lap322
clipper's remarks: Palin has a Bachelor's in Journalism.

So, an Associate's in nursing should qualify me to be the next Surgeon General in McSame's administration, right? Raving about drugs and alcohol, for example, would be a problem for us.”

Needless to say, it’s really up to you to decide how private you need and want to be. If you are applying for a job with the government or a very conservative bank, for example, you may have greater concerns than others about employers or co-workers viewing your profile and pictures. But even if you're not that concerned, there's really no way to justify missing out on an opportunity because you refuse to take down that profile pic of you killing a keg stand—just be smart and utilize those privacy settings!

<clipSource>http://www.gradspot.com/Career/Preparing+for+the+Job+Hunt/Cleaning+Up+Your+Online+Profile</clipSource>

Too much information required...

clipped by: LesMuise
clipper's remarks: Finally a need to know limit....

Clip Source: www.cbc.ca

Within the 38 pages, which I’ve scanned and put up, in very readable format Google gives the technical details into a project of theirs: an open source browser called Google Chrome. In a nut-shell, here’s what the comic announces Google Chrome to be:

Google Chrome is Google’s open source browser project.

The browser will include a JavaScript Virtual Machine called V8

Google Chrome will use special tabs.

The browser has an address bar with auto-completion features

As a default homepage Chrome presents you with a kind of “speed dial” feature, similar to the one of Opera.

Chrome has a privacy mode; Google says you can create an “incognito” window “and nothing that occurs in that window is ever logged on your computer.”

<clipSource>http://blogoscoped.com/archive/2008-09-01-n47.html</clipSource>

my

clipped by: tanzenan

Clip Source: clipmarks.com
