Ten Steps To Tyranny

Naomi Wolf, recently penned a book The End of America: A Letter of Warning to a Young Patriot, which is basically a call to arms for citizens of the United States.

Basically, she chronicles the ten steps that occurred prior to the rise of the Nazi's, and shows that those same 10 steps are in process here, and now.

Invoke an internal and external threat - This one is fairly obvious. The threat that we are constantly confronted with is "Islamo-fascism," whatever that is. The Cowboy President would also have you believe that the ephemeral "War on Terror" is a never-ending, global fight that has to be waged, everywhere inside the United States and out, with no clear actors, and no clear path to victory.

Titan jails 'could be dangerous'

The proposed giant Titan jails could be dangerous and ministers have failed to explain why they would save money, a prisons watchdog has said.

The council criticised the government's consultation on the plan, describing it as a "fait accompli".

The Ministry of Justice is searching for sites of at least 50 acres for jails of four or five storeys, costing an estimated £350m each.

The current jail-building programme has a target of a total of 96,000 prison places by 2014.

Frankland jail: Muslim inmates living in fear for their safety at high-security prison

Muslim prisoners, including some convicted terrorists, inside one of Britain's biggest high security prisons feel so unsafe that they have sought sanctuary in the jail's segregation unit for their own protection, the chief inspector of prisons discloses today.

Anne Owers says that there have been serious incidents of "prisoner-on-prisoner" violence inside Frankland prison, near Durham, with black and ethnic minority inmates in general the target of attacks and Muslim prisoners in particular.

Owers says in her inspection report on the high security jail published today that some, but not all, of the Muslim inmates who have been attacked had been convicted of terrorism offences.

George Bush Sr. has been involved in this since Day One and was the driving force behind Iran-Contra.

Gary Webb, who broke this story, was demoted by his newspaper, the San Jose Mercury, and driven out of journalism by his "colleagues."

The Washington Post, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and the San Francisco Examiner all ran multi-page stories personally discrediting him.

Webb later committed suicide by shooting himself in the head - twice.

He was 17 when he came to New York from Hong Kong in 1992 with his parents and younger sister, eyeing the skyline like any newcomer. Fifteen years later, Hiu Lui Ng was a New Yorker: a computer engineer with a job in the Empire State Building, a house in Queens, a wife who is a United States citizen and two American-born sons.

But when Mr. Ng, who had overstayed a visa years earlier, went to immigration headquarters in Manhattan last summer for his final interview for a green card, he was swept into immigration detention and shuttled through jails and detention centers in three New England states.

In April, Mr. Ng began complaining of excruciating back pain. By mid-July, he could no longer walk or stand. And last Wednesday, two days after his 34th birthday, he died in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement in a Rhode Island hospital, his spine fractured and his body riddled with cancer that had gone undiagnosed and untreated for months.

U.S. Accused of Holding Terror Suspects on Secret Floating Prisons

According to a group of human rights lawyers, the U.S. is operating secret prison ships out in the waters of the Indian Ocean and elsewhere. Far from the prying eyes of the media, lawyers, or, well, anyone, detainees are interrogated aboard the ships and then rendered to other, often undisclosed, locations, it is claimed.

The group's analysis also claims there have been more than 200 new cases of rendition since 2006, when President George Bush declared that the practice had stopped.

Slavery is defined as the act of keeping a person as a piece of property. If you ask the average American if slavery still exists in America, their answer is likely to be no. After watching this video, many will change their minds.

As the crack epidemic flooded inner cities across the country, in 1986 Reagan's "Anti-Drug Abuse Act" makes the penalty for crack possession a hundred times harsher than that of powder cocaine. The following year new legislation is passed allowing private corporations to own and operate prisons. Twenty years later over a million non-violent drug offenders are imprisoned while corporate stocks are traded based on how many prisoners are in the cages.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - America's alcohol prohibition lasted 13 years, filled the country's prisons, inspired contempt for the law among millions, bred corruption and produced Al Capone. What it did not do was keep Americans from drinking.

America's marijuana prohibition drew into its 72nd year this month. It has created a huge underground industry

in 1978, when a bill introduced by Senator Edward Kennedy was passed by the Senate but never got to a vote in the House.

A report released in 2008 by the International Center for Prison Studies at King's College London states that the United States has the highest incarceration rate and most people behind bars per capita in the world. Over 50% of these people are imprisoned for drug crimes.

Bush on the National Security Council dealing with counter-terrorism until 2003 but is not the source for this story. "In my presence, in the White House, the possibility of using Diego Garcia for detaining high value targets was discussed," says Clarke. Clarke did not witness a final resolution of the issue, but adds, "Given everything that we know about the Administration's approach to the law on these matters, I find the report that the U.S. did use the island for detention or interrogation entirely credible."

Almost two years have passed since President George W. Bush publicly acknowledged the existence of a CIA program in which agency-leased aircraft fly terror suspects between secret prisons and interrogation sites around the world. "This program has helped us to take potential mass murderers off the streets before they have a chance to kill," the President said on Sept. 6, 2006. Since that admission, the White House has declined to elaborate or comment further on the program's specifics, although multiple reports have surfaced regarding the existence of secret facilities in Poland and Romania.

The source tells TIME that, in 2002 and possibly 2003, the U.S. imprisoned and interrogated one or more terrorist suspects on Diego Garcia, an island in the Indian Ocean controlled by the United Kingdom.

Free condoms for some California Inmates

VACAVILLE, Calif. -- A controversial new pilot program providing free condoms for prison inmates is in its final planning stages.

The Solano State Prison is installing 10 condom distribution machines that will be stocked with 1,200 condoms a week.

The hope is that the condoms will limit the spread of sexually transmitted diseases among inmates.

"We know risk behavior is being reduced," said Mary Sylla of the Center for Health Justice. "We will eventually be reducing HIV infections by this measure."

A nonprofit group is supplying the prison with the machines and condoms, which comes out to costing a total of $60,000.

It is also technically against the law for inmates to have sex

"Sexual activity in prisons is still illegal," said Terry Thornton of the California Corrections Department. "Inmates will be notified of that as well where the machines are located."

A union representing prison guard supervisors is opposed to the distribution of condoms.

Audit Finds Millions Wasted in Iraq Construction Project

Millions of dollars were likely wasted on a 900 million dollar army contract to build courthouses, prisons, police and other security facilities in Iraq, an audit released Monday has found.

The audit by the congressionally appointed Special Inspector General for Iraq, Stuart Bowen, found that the contractor, Parsons Delaware Inc., completed only about a third of 53 planned construction projects.

The contract was one of a dozen design-build construction contracts awarded by the army in 2004 to restore Iraq’s infrastructure in broad areas such as security and justice, water, oil, electricity and transportation.

The report said more than 142 million dollars, or nearly 43 percent of the funds disbursed so far, “were spent on projects that were either terminated or cancelled, although a number of the projects were subsequently completed.”
