The Nation's Chris Hayes scored a big scoop this morning, unearthing a report from 1999 of Palin's support of then-Independent Presidential candidate Buchanan. And per Ben Smith, Buchanan said today on MSNBC that Palin was "brigader [for his campaign] back in 1996." Take a look:

Buchanan's statements and actions over the years have earned him his own page on the Anti-Defamation League's website, highlighting statements ranging from "Capitol Hill is Israeli occupied territory" from 1990 and "If you want to know ethnicity and power in the United States Senate, 13 members of the Senate are Jewish folks who are from 2 percent of the population. That is where real power is at..." from just last year

Palin appears to have been a long-time supporter of Buchanan. This is the way McCain and the Republicans expect to court Jewish voters (as well as the roughly 90 to 95 percent of Americans who are to the left of Buchanan)

The news of John McCain’s vice presidential pick buzzed through the office this morning and brought all productivity to a halt. Conservative and liberal alike huddled in a single cubicle to watch the announcement live on CNN.com. Not a single word of criticism was uttered, as nearly every Alaskan has a unified love for our humble, no-nonsense, genuine-Alaskan Governor. Sarah Palin has a nearly 90% approval rating in this state for good reason. She has brought honesty and integrity to a state government notorious for corruption, forsaken many of the ritzy trappings of the governorship to set an example for fiscal restraint and taken on both Republicans and Democrats in Alaska politics only for their own benefit.

Palin: Pioneer, maverick -- and now game-changer

(CNN) -- The McCain campaign calls her a "tough executive who has demonstrated" readiness to be president. The Republican National Committee calls her a "conservative star with the talent, energy and family support necessary to carry out common sense policies."

But the Obama campaign calls her a candidate with "the thinnest foreign policy experience in history" who is "currently under investigation in her own state." And one of the Senate's top Democrats, Charles Schumer, said that although she is "a fine person, her lack of experience makes the thought of her assuming the presidency troubling."

She enters an already historic election, knowing well two of the biggest things McCain needs her to do: shore up votes among social conservatives and win over disaffected Hillary Clinton-supporting Democrats, many of them women.

Sarah Palin and Barack Obama are more or less the same age, but Governor Palin has run a state and a town and a commercial fishing operation, whereas (to reprise a famous line on the Rev Jackson) Senator Obama ain't run nothin' but his mouth. She's done the stuff he's merely a poseur about. Post-partisan? She took on her own party's corrupt political culture directly while Obama was sucking up to Wright and Ayers and being just another get-along Chicago machine pol.

First, Governor Palin is not merely, as Jay describes her, "all-American", but hyper-American. What other country in the developed world produces beauty queens who hunt caribou and serve up a terrific moose stew? As an immigrant, I'm not saying I came to the United States purely to meet chicks like that, but it was certainly high on my list of priorities. And for the gun-totin' Miss Wasilla then to go on to become Governor while having five kids makes it an even more uniquely American story. Next to her resume, a guy who's done nothing but serve in the phony-baloney job of "community organizer" and write multiple autobiographies looks like just another creepily self-absorbed lifelong member of the full-time political class that infests every advanced democracy.

Second, it can't be in Senator Obama's interest for the punditocracy to spends its time arguing about whether the Republicans' vice-presidential pick is "even more" inexperienced than the Democrats' presidential one.

Wikipedia Edits Forecast Vice Presidential Picks

In the days leading up to Republican presidential candidate John McCain's running mate announcement, political junkies glued to broadcasts and blogs for clues of McCain's veep choice might have done better to keep a sharp eye on each candidate's Wikipedia entry.

Just hours before McCain declared his veep choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, her Wiki page saw a flurry of activity, with editors adding details about her approval rating and husband's employment.

On August 28, Palin's entry was updated at least 68 times, with at least an additional 54 changes made to her entry over the preceding five days. In contrast, Pawlenty's entry received 54 alterations on the 28th, and just 12 changes during the prior five days.

Perhaps most impressively, in just a year and a half in office in Alaska she has established a reputation as a tough reformer.

She is also a staunch advocate of expanding domestic drilling for oil, popular among oil-rich Alaska and among Americans as a whole. At her first appearance on the stump yesterday alongside her running-mate, she seemed assured and steady.

But her selection adds a startling new uncertainty into the presidential race, a risky gamble for the Republicans but a complicating headache for the Democrats.

In her first appearance beside her running-mate yesterday she immediately drove home the point, paying tribute to Hillary Clinton and Geraldine Ferraro, who ran as the Democratic vice-presidential candidate, saying: "The women of America are not finished yet. Mrs Palin is a strong conservative. She is fervently anti-abortion and this year gave birth to her fifth child, who has Down Syndrome. After the birth she and her husband said: "We knew through early testing he would face special challenges, and we feel privileged that God would entrust us with this gift and allow us unspeakable joy as he entered our lives."

Mrs Palin brings advantages to the campaign as it seeks to defy the odds and win a third straight presidential victory for the Republicans.

She has no connection to the Bush administration, which will help to deflect the Obama campaign's charge that Mr McCain is running for President Bush's third term.

Nothing undersocres the riskiness of Sen. John McCain's pick of a running mate than this fact: "In an interview with Roll Call two weeks ago, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) said she had met presumptive GOP presidential nominee Sen. John McCain only once or twice."

According to Politico, McCain "spoke with just once on the phone" with Palin "about the position before offering it in person earlier this week."

Dan Gerstein sums up McCain's gamble: "He's betting his presidency on a naked political play for holdout Hillary supporters and other female swing voters - and hoping that a large share of these predominantly pro-choice women will ignore or overlook Palin's staunch pro-life, anti-stem cell views."
