One such study, published in 2004, asked more than 100 pregnant women to report on their senses at several points in their pregnancy, and 76 percent of respondents experienced a change in smell or taste [source: Nordin et al]. Two-thirds of the women reported increased smell sensitivity, but they also reported distortions in smells, phantom smells and abnormal tastes, including increased bitter sensitivity and decreased salt sensitivity [source: Nordin et al.]. Women experienced these effects mostly during the first trimester of pregnancy, though a smaller percentage reported changes at a later stage of pregnancy as well. After pregnancy, all changes to smell and taste perception disappeared.

One supermarket chain thought pregnant women would make better wine tasters.

A stillborn Israeli baby who was pronounced dead by doctors "came back to life" yesterday after spending hours in a hospital refrigerator.

The baby, weighing only 600 grams at birth, spent at least five hours inside one of the hospital's refrigerated storage units, before her parents, who had taken her to be buried, began noticing some movement.

"We unwrapped her and felt she was moving. We didn't believe it at first. Then she began holding my mother's hand and then we saw her open her mouth," said 26-year-old Faiza Magdoub, the baby's mother.

The baby was pronounced dead several hours earlier, after doctors at Western Galilee hospital in northern Israel were forced to abort her mother's pregnancy because of internal bleeding.

Ms Magdoub was 23 weeks into her pregnancy.

"We don't know how to explain this, so when we don't know how to explain things in the medical world we call it a miracle, and this is probably what happened," hospital deputy director Moshe Daniel said.

The finding indicated that subtle changes in the embryonic formation of the brain serotonin system in females could impact the quality of the maternal care they later provide for their offspring.
The researchers say that future studies with Pet-1 deficient mothers may help to further elucidate the link between serotonin and maternal behaviour, and lead to the development of new therapeutic approaches for treatment of post-partum depression and child neglect.

A new study on mice conducted at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine has shown that the inactivation of brain serotonin in the mothers may affect the quality of the maternal care, and in turn offspring survival.

During the study, the researchers genetically engineered mice to carry a mutation in a gene called Pet-1, which directs the development of the brain serotonin neurotransmitter system.

Though Pet-1 deficient mice mothers showed normal rates of pregnancy and gave birth to normal numbers of offspring, it was observed that not of their offspring survived to five days of age.

Further studies indicated that a specific deficiency of maternal care was the cause of pup mortality.

The researchers found that Pet-1 deficient mothers, though nursed their offspring, often failed to build suitable nests and never organized offspring in a huddle.

Presidential contenders Barack Obama and John McCain differed sharply on abortion Saturday, with McCain saying a baby's human rights begin "at conception," while Obama restated his support for legalized abortion.

Obama said he would limit abortions in the late stages of pregnancy if there are exceptions for the mother's health. He said he knew that people who consider themselves pro-life will find his stance "inadequate."

McCain expressed his anti-abortion stand simply and quickly, saying human rights begin the instant a human egg is fertilized. McCain, who adopted a daughter from Bangladesh, also called for making adoption easier.

Obama said America's greatest moral failure is its insufficient help to the disadvantaged.

McCain said the nation's greatest moral shortcoming is its failure to "devote ourselves to causes greater than our self-interests."

The commencement of a massive, mandatory vaccination program in Brazil has raised suspicions among international pro-life activists, who note that the program is similar to others in recent years that have included a hidden sterilizing agent in the vaccines.

Rubella is normally little more than a nuisance for those who contract it, with symptoms that pass in a matter of days or weeks.

Although the number of children affected by Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS) is less per capita than that of both the United Kingdom and Australia in the 1990s, Temporao is heading a mandatory program to vaccinate 70 million Brazilians, which would make it the largest vaccination in history.

Human Life International notes that just two years ago, researchers found that the rubella vaccine used in a similar campaign in Argentina was laced with Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG), a pregnancy hormone that is necessary for a newly conceived zygote to implant in the uterine wall after conception.

I have repeatedly said that I think it’s entirely appropriate for states to restrict or even prohibit late-term abortions as long as there is a strict, well-defined exception for the health of the mother. Now, I don’t think that ‘mental distress’ qualifies as the health of the mother. I think it has to be a serious physical issue that arises in pregnancy, where there are real, significant problems to the mother carrying that child to term.

HCG - What is it

HCG is a hormone created during the early part of pregnancy. HCG has a few roles:

to maintain progesterone production by the corpus luteum;
to maintain the endometrium for the first trimester;
to stimulate fetal gonad development and androgen synthesis by the fetal testes;
to stimulate the secretion of estrogen and development of the placenta.

HCG Injections and HCG Levels Testing

Infertility treatments to trigger ovulation or to lengthen the luteal phase of your cycle that feature HCG injections such as Profasi or Pregnyl can create some problems. A woman will need to wait as many as fourteen days for the hormone to leave her body (although this is dose-dependent and can also differ from one woman to the next), otherwise she runs the risk of getting a false positive on a pregnancy test.

False positives can be avoided by taking two consecutive quantitative HCG beta blood tests. If the second test shows a HCG levels increase, the chances are good you’re pregnant.

B'Tselem is investigating twelve cases of settler attacks on Palestinian between 29 July and 4 August. These cases reflect a sharp increase in reports of such violence, and represent a peak to an escalation that has been underway over the past few weeks. The cases recent took place across the West Bank, with a majority in South Mount Hebron and the settlements around Nablus.

Five of the cases involved stone throwing; in two livestock were stolen; one included gunfire, five physical assaults, and three involved property damage (some of the cases included more than one kind of abuse). In some of the cases, law-enforcement authorities failed to apprehend suspects. In the two thefts of livestock, police apparently did not return the livestock to their owners. At least four of the cases involve minors.

Scientists trial oestrogen in treating women with schizophrenia

Australian scientists are taking a novel approach in treating women with schizophrenia. They have just published the findings of a clinical trial using the female hormone oestrogen.

The link between women's hormones and their moods is well known.

Life cycle studies have shown that women are more vulnerable to a first episode of serious mental illnesses such as schizophrenia at times of hormonal changes, such as post-pregnancy or menopause.

There is also some evidence from animal studies that the female hormone oestrogen acts as an anti-psychotic.

Professor Jayashri Kulkarni from the Alfred Hospital and Monash University in Melbourne wanted to see what effect oestrogen had on women with schizophrenia.

One hundred and two women were given a patch of either active hormone or a placebo.

Participants were not told what they were using.

They took their other anti-psychotic medications during the trial.

Researchers said those on the hormone treatment had their symptoms significantly reduced.

Preemies' Problems May Last a Lifetime

As a new study paints a dark picture for babies born before 37 weeks, an expert offers advice about having a healthy pregnancy.

Today nearly 13 percent of the more than 4 million babies born in the United States each year arrive prematurely—which means moms deliver them earlier than 37 weeks into their pregnancies.

That's up from 10.6 percent in 1990. That may not sound like such a big deal, but the younger babies are at birth, the greater their risk of medical conditions such as cerebral palsy and mental retardation.

In the long term, premature birth can also affect education level attained and even income earned as an adult. The increase in premature births is due, in part, to the boom in infertility treatments, which can increase the number of multiple births.

Improved technology that keeps more premature babies alive is also a factor.
