Pot-growing priest says crop is a gift from God

A CATHOLIC priest is being watched by police around the clock after they uncovered a field of cannabis he claims is a gift from God.

Father Cyril Papudov, of Petrich, Bulgaria, has been arrested seven times but police have never caught him actually cultivating the crop.

He claims the cannabis seeded by itself and is part of God's gift of nature and nothing to do with him.

A police insider said: "There has been a great deal of suspicion over the years about what is going on with these plants.

"He is a man of the cloth and so a lot of people don't want to think badly of him but frankly if someone has a huge crop of cannabis in their back garden it's highly unlikely they are just sitting there admiring its horticultural properties."

Police are now planning a 24-hour surveillance operation.

The police insider added: "Although the man involved is a member of the clergy we feel this surveillance is necessary.

Australians back medical marijuana, heroin injecting rooms

MOST Australians would support clinical trials of cannabis for medical use, a new survey of more than 23,000 people has found.

Almost half the respondents said they would support regulated heroin-injecting rooms.

The nationwide survey found overwhelming support for legalising cannabis for medical reasons, backed by nearly 70 per cent, while approval of clinical trials for cannabis approached 75 per cent.

Most people also looked favourably on needle and syringe programs, supported by more than 65 per cent.

When it came to tobacco, there was firm support across the board for bans on smoking in workplaces, pubs and clubs.

More than 80 per cent of Australians wanted smoking banned in the workplace, with Canberrans most strongly in favour at close to 85 per cent.

And more than 75 per cent of respondents wanted smoking banned from pubs and clubs.

Crock Pot Christmas Sugared Walnuts

4 cups (change servings and units)

Ingredients

1 lb walnut pieces
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon, ground
1/4 teaspoon ginger, ground
1/4 teaspoon allspice, ground
1/8 teaspoon clove, ground

Directions

In a 3 1/2 quart crock pot, stir the walnuts and butter until combined.

Add the powdered sugar, stirring to coat evenly.

Cover and slow-cook on.

stirring occasionally, until the nuts are coated with a crisp glaze, about 2 hours.

Transfer the nuts to a serving bowl.

Cowboy Stew

This is a delicious and easy meal that my family loves. Just fire up the crock pot, toss in the ingredients, wait 4 hours, and dinner's ready. It's good with tortilla chips, salsa, and sour cream on the side. Also tasty rolled up in tortilla shells with a little Mexican cheese. Or you can eat it just as it is!

SERVES 6 -8 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

1 lb ground beef, browned
1 (7 1/2 ounce) package Spanish rice mix (I use Zatarain's)
1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
1 (14 1/2 ounce) can diced tomatoes (chili style)
1 (15 1/4 ounce) can whole kernel corn

Directions

Spray the bottom and sides of crock pot with non-stick cooking spray.

Layer the browned ground beef, rice mix, crushed tomatoes, diced tomatoes (do not drain), and corn in crock pot. Do not stir.

Cover and heat on low for 4 hours or until rice is tender. Stir well and serve.

U.S. Marshals Arrest Self-Proclaimed 'Vampire'

Earlier this month, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office asked for help from the U.S. Marshals Regional Task Force for help locating Jeffrey Michael Mitchell, who officials said always wears black clothing and believes he is a vampire.

Federal agents said Mitchell was so consumed with this belief, he capped his teeth so that he would appear as a vampire and referred to himself as "Draven."

Investigators said Mitchell would only work enough hours to support his pot-smoking habit.

When he was arrested, two minor children were in his home and federal agents and local law enforcement agencies are investigating allegations of sexual molestation charges in Virginia.

Masson's Blog has an insightful and amusing post -- a twofer -- on Hoosiers for Beverage Choice, those bold progressives who are pushing Indiana to get with 35 states and permit alcohol sales on Sunday. More of us can get behind that bandwagon, which is only about 75 years overdue.

Our "blue laws" regulating Sunday sales in the U.S. are quite a history lesson, stretching back to the Puritans and long before. Historically, some European countries refused to allow any commerce on Sundays. That was God's day, and you couldn't sell a pot or swallow a brew. Naturally the Puritans brought this part of the Old Country with them.

Indiana has its identity strongly tied up in this crusade. During the 1920s, 90 of our 92 counties had active members of the Ku Klux Klan -- and the KKK, lo and behold, was heavily aligned with the Prohibition party, if not synonymous. Hence getting rid of booze was a No. 1 Klan goal.

Though not quite as bad as toting the GPS module around with you, one particular marijuana farmer had to be mighty embarrassed / wondering what he ever did to deserve such bad luck when a GPS-equipped turtle meandered into his crop. As the story goes, a close friend of the police -- a box turtle with no fear of Big Brother -- just happened upon a pot stash on US park property. Clearly, Mr. Isiah Johnson (the culprit) was heavily stoned when choosing US land to farm his ganja, and now he's in custody until he's "extradited back DC to face drug charges." And you thought all you had to do was dodge those CCTV cameras...

Chicken Porridge Recipe

(Nyonya Recipe)

Ingredients:

½ chicken

¾ heaped rice bowl rice, washed and drained

75 g ginger, shredded

1 stalk coriander (cilantro) leaves

½ teaspoon salt

pepper to taste

sesame oil

Method:

Debone and shred chicken. Put the chicken bones in a pot and add 2½ rice bowls of water. Boil for 15 to 20 minutes. Remove bones and cool the chicken stock. Add rice and chicken flesh into stock and heat again. Boil until rice grains break open. The porridge should be just watery. If not, add some water. Add ½ teaspoon salt and bring to boil again. Remove from heat. To serve, scoop porridge into a bowl and add some shredded ginger, coriander leaves, pepper and a few drops of sesame oil.

Banned Dog Meat Served In Beijing

Restaurants in Beijing are continuing to serve dog meat despite an Olympic ban on the infamous dish.

The dishes didn't go down very well

We bought a bowl of poodle, I mean noodle soup, with a generous handful of poached dog meat scattered over the top, for 60 yuan - £5 - and a plate of stir-fried dog in chilli sauce for £2.50.

The fried dog meat was revolting, and even though the fiery sauce managed to cover up most of the flavour, neither me nor my Chinese translator managed more than a mouthful.

Da Cheng Jiu Jia, which in English means Big Honest Restaurant, specialises in dog meat, serving up everything from dog hot pot to fried dog's penis.

But Sky News found five Beijing restaurants still serving the dish, and went along to visit one of them in the north-west of the city.

"We buy it in bags," she said." It is a mixture of different types of dog. Big ones and small ones."
