clipper's remarks: The parchment scroll, printed in calligraphy and bearing the signatures of both President William McKinley and Secretary of War Elijah Root, arrived at Fort Meade safely rolled in a mailing tube in March. The parchment is in nearly perfect condition. The cardboard tube, addressed to Fenton in the perfect penmanship of the past and bearing a military mail designation in lieu of postage, looks like it has survived 107 years in the U.S. postal system.

"I'm thinking he never got it," Charles Rambow, director of the Fort Meade Museum, said. "I think it's been floating around in the postal system for a number of years. It's called snail mail."

Wacker delivered the antique military document to Rambow for lack of a forwarding address.

"This guy certainly doesn't have a mailbox here, so I thought, why not put it in the museum?" Wacker said

Mail delivered 107 years late

Capt. Charles W. Fenton of the 13th Cavalry hasn't had a mailbox at Fort Meade in 107 years, so when his captain's commission from 1901 arrived at the Fort Meade Post Office this spring, Postmaster Kathy Wacker didn't have a forwarding address for him.

It came in with my morning mail from Rapid City one morning, as if it were just a regular piece of mail," Wacker said of the historic proclamation. "Where it came from -- who knows? I have no idea. It's weird, isn't it?"

Summertime — a time for sunny days, beach weekends and of course, leisurely reflections on the end of the world and the monster asteroids that could smack into us. The centennial anniversary of the last big impact, the 1908 Tunguska blast that rocked Siberia, falls Monday, June 30, bringing with it a reminder of the very slight chance that a hunk of space rock out there might have Earth's number.

The Tunguska "event" leveled nearly 800 square miles of swampy woodland in Siberia, traveling from the northwest to deliver a 5-megaton blast seen by hundreds of witnesses, including one who created a postage stamp of the explosion. A space rock about 50 yards long had zoomed into the Earth's atmosphere and exploded in mid-air.

Knobs

I wanted some wingnuts to let me quickly clamp the bed material to the table and release it again. The XY table came from the US so it has 2BA, rather than metric threads, in it. That means I can't get them locally and would have to order them. The cost would be about $6 for 10 including postage, but I only wanted 4.
