Ration Milk, Meat to Combat Climate Change

Milk and meat will have to be rationed if the world is to avoid dangerous climate change, according to a Government-funded report.

Cattle, sheep and pig farming produces around 8 per cent of Britain's greenhouse gas emissions.

Most is in the form of methane, from belching livestock, or nitrous oxide from soil used to grow feed.

It says Britons will need to cut consumption by a quarter if emissions are to remain stable.

'This roughly translates to a 4oz portion of meat every other day - equivalent to a quarter-pounder hamburger or two sausages or three to four rashers of bacon,' the report says.

For milk, there would be just enough for cereal in the morning or three cheese sandwiches a week.

She said campaigns to persuade people to consume less meat and dairy produce were unlikely to succeed, and regulation and personal carbon trading schemes, where goods and services are rationed, might be needed.

Fix: Digitally blurring the area

A busy beach filled with people created a cluttered backdrop for this portrait taken just before a new member of the family was born. Erin Roe used Adobe Photoshop CS to blur the background area, making the subjects pop.

1. Use the Marquee tool to select the background. Erin chose only the top portion of the shot to make the blur feel more natural.
2. From the Select menu, choose Feather to soften the selection line. Go to the Filters menu and choose the Lens Blur filter to give the shot a realistic softened background.

3. Select the middle portion of the background and repeat the steps using less blur to create a gradual softening so the background and foreground blend naturally.

Writing in Foreign Affairs late last year, McCain pledged, “As president, I will increase the size of the U.S. Army and the Marine Corps from the currently planned level of roughly 750,000 troops to 900,000 troops.” If McCain gets his wish, these two branches will be nearly 40 percent larger than they were prior to 9/11.

And how much will these additional troops cost? By my estimates, nearly 10 times what McCain would save if he eliminated every single earmark.

And McCain is proposing to increase that portion of the military budget that has already witnessed considerable cost growth in recent years. The military has boosted bonuses to entice new recruits to join, and to keep those already in the service from leaving.

According to earlier Army estimates, every additional 10,000 soldiers cost about $1.2 billion a year, so the costs of McCain’s proposal to grow the force by another 20 percent might ultimately total less than $176 billion

Midsummer

Annette and Jon were touring in Torres Del Paine National Park in Chile, Southern Patagonia when they found an amazing site.

Here's the story in their own words: "When viewing the terminal face of a glacier, typically you only see 10% of the glacier on the surface. Calving, a natural occurrence where the glacier loses ice from its' terminus, results in large free-floating chunks of ice. This particular ice had broken off from the glacier the evening before from underwater / lower portion of the glacier.

"Witnesses heard a cracking and a loud "boom," and then the ice surfaced. We understand ice this large breaks off from under the glacier approximately once a year and we were fortunate to be able to photograph it. The ice is a very deep blue as it is deprived of oxygen. Within 24 hours it will be white as the typical floating ice pieces."

1. That's ridiculous...John McCain IS a senior citizen.

2.All McCain supports is creating government-managed accounts that would allow individuals to invest some portion of their Social Security payroll taxes in widely diversified stock or bond funds.

3. Actually, that's what America USED to be all about...FAMILIES taking care of their family members. But you can relax, because only those who WANT to invest would be subjected to this RADICAL plan. All seniors who want to keep what they have now, would still be allowed to do that.
