clipper's remarks: Balanced and sensible article, tho' I think the questions of are games inherently poorly designed for "female brains" and do the masculine-coded premises and packaging are both resoundly answered with a "yes" if you read Graner-Ray's "Gender Inclusive Game Design" and look at even a few headlining console game examples.

The best guess, then, is that the real reason more women don’t get “into” video games is because, from a distance, it doesn’t feel like it’s “for them.” And if it’s a perception issue, not even a 50/50 ratio on the development side, nor less masculine titles and packaging will help. None of my female friends and family members have ever heard of Portal, for example, even though it was widely received as a “feminist” title.

I Reject Your 'Reality'

Tonight I was reading an article over on SyFy Portal, Taming the Technological Beast by Dan Compora. In it he mentions some of the man vs machine paranoia stories that have been told in print and on screen

Which reminded me of the Butlerian Jihad from Dune. Up until tonight I only knew what the six Dune books and the Dune Encyclopedia had to say about it.

Here is a compelling and horrifying story. A story that strikes deep in the heart of our animal selves: our fears for our children. And it's not a simple story by any means.

Are you fucking kidding me?

It's a cheap knock-off of lesser ideas grafted onto one of the most amazing stories ever written.

I write and read fan fiction and I love it and believe that it is a good (as well as legal) thing.

Yet, after reading this horrid re-imagining of the Butlerian Jihad, I want to scream and shout that no one should ever, ever be allowed to add to the canon after a creator dies.

I have no idea why PeopleTools decided not to document these, but I’ve found a lot of use for them. http://[server]/psp/[site]/?cmd=reloadconfig&pwd=[password]—Reloads the Web Profile http://[server]/psp/[site]/?cmd=viewconfig&pwd=[password]—Displays currently cached Web Profile http://[server]/psp/[site]/?cmd=purge&pwd=[password]— Purges webserver memory cache (portal registry, etc.) http://[server]/psp/[site]/?cmd=viewcp&pwd=[password]—Displays cached node URIs http://[server]/psp/[site]/?cmd=viewsprop&pwd=[password]—Display’s session properties (doesn’t seem to work in 8.44+ anymore) http://[server]/psp/[site]/?cmd=debugCache&pwd=[password]—Cache Control Center… allows you to do all sorts of things with your web cache (8.45.05+ only) The [password] parameter is defined in the Web Profile as a custom property called auditPWD.

Solution 200729839 - E-WS: Where is the HTML code located to change the image sizes of the logo

Specific to:

Enterprise: PeopleTools:HTML

ISSUE:

Where is the HTML located to change the image sizes of the logo on the PeopleSoft signon page? Customer would like to replace the top half of the PeopleSoft signon page with their company's logo. They have located all the .gif files to replace but do not know where the HTML code is located to change the image sizes.

SOLUTION:
The signon page is generated from
<WebLogic home directory>\config\peoplesoft\applications\PORTAL\WEB-INF\psftdocs\<domain name>\signin.html.

After making any changes the WebLogic service has to be restarted.

Forrester says targeted ads and a portal-like menu of options are coming to your set

NEW YORK TV advertising is poised to change dramatically over the next decade, embracing the kind of targeting and user control already common on the Web, according to a new report by Forrester Research.

Forrester lays out a decade-long evolution that will ultimately result in most programming delivered on-demand with targeted ad messages based on location and behavior, along with community functions.

This "Personal TV," as Forrester calls it, would also deliver a Web-like experience for consumers, with a portal-like menu of programming options and search functions.

That hasn't stopped Web giants such as Google and Microsoft from trying to break into the medium and extend their reach across TV advertising. Google is placing ads through Echostar's Dish Network and Microsoft has plans to build an ad network after buying Navic Networks.

Pure has announced an Internet radio that runs embedded Linux and provides FM and DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) playback. The Evoke Flow radio offers WiFi connectivity and media streaming from a connected PC, and is paired with a Internet search portal called the Pure Lounge.

According to Pure, a division of Imagination Technologies that bills itself as "the UK's leading radio manufacturer," the Evoke Flow's design is based on its earlier Evoke-1S DAB radio, currently available for about $180, but with fewer buttons. The DAB format is said to be the leading digital audio broadcast format in the UK, and is now spreading throughout Europe.

The Evoke Flow features media streaming of MP3s and other audio formats from local PCs or network storage. It also provides audio input for connecting an iPod or MiniDisc, and includes an optional "ChargePAK" battery, which is said to offer 15 hours of portable DAB listening. Stereo sound is provided via an optional S-1 speaker.
