Fiscal Disaster in California

The mandatory sentencing craze that has swept the country over the last 30 years did little to cut back the drug trade, but it drove up the prison population and pushed corrections costs to ruinous levels. The process was especially destructive in California, where a federal court has placed the prison system’s dangerously decrepit medical services under a receiver who wants the state to cough up $8 billion to bring that system up to constitutional standards.

The last thing California residents need at this point are new policies that land even more people behind bars and drive up prison spending further. But November’s ballot in California, the birthplace of irresponsible government by referendum, includes two costly initiatives that would do just that.

California voters need to reject Propositions 6 and 9.

I was reminded yesterday that the vast bulk of “wealth” created during the Greenspan/Bernanke bubble years accrued to the very top percentiles of population – with many in the OECD middle class and lower class either stagnating or getting poorer as they mired themselves in unsustainable debt. While opportunity and employment grew strongly in emerging countries, there too the elites gained disproportionately as income inequalities surged. The crash of global financial markets therefore will have disproportionate effect on the elites, impoverishing them to a far greater extent, although it will be felt throughout society as employment, pensions, investments and public services contract.

Once we hit bottom of this downturn, some years hence in all probability, we may experience a democratisation of wealth and opportunity like none seen since the end of World War II when education reforms and unionisation laid the groundwork for the rise of the American and OECD middle classes

The belugas of Cook Inlet, Alaska, are in such trouble that they should be listed under the Endangered Species Act. And the time to act is now, before the comment period ends on October 20!

Troubles come to Cook Inlet in many forms. Cook Inlet oil drill tailings spew into the sea unregulated. Unmanaged gas and coal industries pollute Cook Inlet. Single-hulled oil tankers are no longer escorted by the Coast Guard. And municipal sewage is untreated; rain and storm run-offs are unchecked.

The Cook Inlet beluga population has declined dramatically from 1,300 in the late 70s to only around 300 today. ESA listing will mandate creation of a comprehensive management plan for these beluga whales and for the health of Cook Inlet. Add your comments to the petition letter today!

Legendary deer rediscovered in Sumatran national park

The Sumatran muntjac, a 'lost' species of deer, has been rediscovered in the remote mountains of western Sumatra, Indonesia, nearly a century after its last positive sighting

The Sumatran muntjac was originally discovered in 1914 but had not been seen since 1930

New species - not a subspecies
Taxonomists have now confirmed that the Sumatran muntjac is a new species and not a local sub-species as previously assumed. The species is distinctly smaller and darker than its more common sister species, the red muntjac (Muntiacus muntjac). The 'lost muntjac of Sumatra' has now been placed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) ‘Red List' of species in danger, under the category ‘data deficient', meaning field research is urgently required to establish the details of the deer's range, ecology and population status

Wherever that is, there will probably be a few American tanks and some bombers and things, but at least you won't be keeping the rest of us awake with your shrill cries over phantoms of lost liberty. There may be other countries with higher standards of living, with better governments more responsive to the wishes of their electorate. Sure, there may be countries where freedom and human rights are more than just catchphrases to be tossed out the window the minute it's inconvenient, such as I admit does happen in the United States now and then (especially now).

Nothing has proven the utter hollowness of John McCain's "Country First" slogan than Sarah Palin's vile behavior the past few days.

We all know by now that her low-blow, guilt-by-association stump speeches, in part claiming that Obama is "palling around with terrorists" -- called "unsubstantiated," and "racially-tinged" by the Associated Press and "appalling" and "the dark territory of race-baiting and xenophobia" by the New York Times -- are part of a negative attack strategy announced publically by senior Republican operatives on Saturday.

Will the disgraceful and desperate attacks hurt Obama? Maybe, maybe not. But one thing is clear: they will hurt our country.

We could choose to simply "discuss" concepts and those discussions may result in nothing at all, no matter how well intentioned. Even worse, discussion without action fixates the mind on discussion and creates the easily accepted illusion of progress.

Young Online Males Choose Web over TV

Nearly three-quarters of US male Internet users ages 18 to 34 surveyed were online for more than 10 hours per week during Q2 2008, according to a study conducted by Hall & Partners for Break Media.

That heavy usage is making young men devoted to the Web. Nearly seven out of 10 respondents said they could not live without the Internet, compared with 31% who said the same of television.

Advertisers targeting young men on the Web have the right idea, judging by the study. Nearly six out of 10 respondents said they recalled online ads after going offline, and 47% had purchased a product or service as a result of an online ad.

Men in college are online slightly less than the general population of men ages 18 to 34. A study of college students published in August 2008 by EDUCAUSE revealed that 35% of male college student Internet users spent 21 or more hours online per week.

People in all branches of the service are getting tired of repeated deployments. "I think more of them will vote for Obama than McCain," said Jennings. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, deployed troops are putting their money where their mouth is: they've given four times as much money to Obama as McCain.

"Any assumption that the military vote is overwhelmingly in favor of the Republican Party -- based on demographics alone -- is suspect, at the very least," said Donald S. Inbody, a retired Navy Captain who is on the political science faculty at Texas State University.

This could result in a 1.2 to 1 advantage for Obama in military communities, according to Inbody, especially if the campaign "isn't tone deaf" to the inroads that are possible.

John McCain assumes he has the military vote -- but does he?

The Military Times recently released its annual survey of subscribers, which shows McCain-Palin enjoying a commanding lead over Obama-Biden (68/23 percent). But this is not a random sample, by any stretch of the imagination. Military Times subscribers are significantly older than the active military population. Nearly half of those surveyed are retirees, and minorities are under-represented.

"Everyone I talk to wants change but on base you can't say certain things. At a bar or a party, everyone tells me they're voting for Obama," said Thomas Singleton, 27, a former military telecommunications specialist

"My military friends are tired of being lied to," said Singleton. "They're told to deploy for six months, but it ends up being a year. And when they come home, they can't find a job. One of my friends is staying in the Army only because he can't find a civilian job."
