THIS year, the number of pensioners in the UK exceeded the number of minors for the first time in history. That's remarkable in its own right, but the real "population explosion" has been among the oldest of the old - the centenarians. In fact, this is the fastest-growing demographic in much of the developed world. In the UK, their numbers have increased by a factor of 60 since the early 20th century. Currently, 1 in 100 American adults are now behind bars, with over 1.3 million Americans in state or federal correctional institutions (and close to a million more are in local jails). This explosion of our prison population since the beginning of the "war on drugs" in the 1970's has meant the bloating of state budgets, the crowding out of essential services, the destruction of many communities, and robbing many young people of their future. Less well reported is the way the census counts prisoners, which results in political distortions that undermine the principle of one person, one vote.

Last week, a Siberian hydroelectric dam failed when an explosion rocked the site’s turbine room, killing dozens and taking 6,000 megawatts of electricity offline.

While the tragedy’s ultimate causes are unclear, Russian media has been questioning the state of the aging Soviet-made infrastructure. Dams are getting older in the United States, too. The average age of America’s 80,000 dams is 51 years. More than 2,000 dams near population centers are in need of repair, according to statistics released this month by the Association of State Dam Safety Officials.

Last year, 140 dams were fixed, but inspectors discovered 368 more that need help. That’s why the American Society of Civil Engineers gave our dams a grade of “D” in its 2009 report on the nation’s infrastructure. There are just too many aging dams and too few safety inspectors.

Australians are being urged to eat camel meat to help tackle their population explosion.

An American newsreader has branded Kevin Rudd, the Australian prime minister, a 'serial killer' in a bizarre outburst over his government's plans to control a feral camel plague with aerial culling.

At the Centralian Gold abattoir outside Alice Springs, business is brisk. Scores of animals are brought in each week to be slaughtered, deboned and packaged into sausages, steaks and mince.

But the largest slabs of meat on the racks are not beef, lamb or even kangaroo, but camel. Garry Dann, who owns the business, describes camel meat as "beautiful, healthy and organic" and says demand for the product is growing every month.

Mr Dann, who sells camel sausages, mince and steaks to restaurants across Australia, is at the forefront of a movement that wants to turn a "camel plague" in the outback into a lucrative and environmentally sustainable industry.

June 4 (Bloomberg) -- An explosion of art, music, jewelry and hunting technology appeared 45,000 years ago because of increased population density, rather than the evolution of the human brain, a study said.

Researchers used genetic estimates of ancient population sizes, archaeological artifacts and computer simulations of social learning. They found complex skills involving abstract thinking would be passed down through generations and across groups only when populations reach a critical level, according to the study in tomorrow’s edition of the journal Science.

Increased interaction between groups, the sharing of ideas and the exchange of raw materials that led to the flowering of human culture may explain why concentrated centers of industry, such as California’s Silicon Valley, produce technological innovations, said Mark Thomas, 44, a senior author of the study and a senior lecturer at University College London in England.

In supposed first world nations we live longer - but it is often at the expense of quality of life. Though I am not in a position to say, whose life is more important than anyone elses.

What it does bring up for me, are questions I ask myself about what is really important - human population explosion or space for the earth to regenerate? Is colonizing another planet going to solve our current issues or will we just take them to a new planet?

There are many intricate questions that come up for me around this.

A group of Iranian actors accused of making pornographic films could face the death penalty, under a 2007 law allowing capital punishment for people convicted of making obscene films.

Iran is no stranger to oppression and it is among the world's worst offenders in capital punishment - including an active death penalty for victimless crimes. Drug trafficking is also a capital offense in Iran - and defined as possession of more than 30 grams of heroin or five kilos of opium. Many executions, especially for sex offenses, are carried out by public hanging.

Dr Naser Fakouhi, one of Iran's leading sociologists and the head of anthropology at Tehran University, has warned that the country's huge number of young people – roughly 70% of the population are aged under 35 – has caused an explosion in internet pornography and the rapid growth of an underground industry.

Cat eradication on remote Macquarie Island causes fails to help native species say scientists

Cats were removed by conservationists from the sub-Antarctic island from the 1980s in order to save native burrowing birds.

Cats were brought to Macquarie Island by sailors in the 19th Century, where they lived off rabbits that were also introduced.

But after the virus myxomatosis wiped out the rabbit population in the 1970s, the cats turned to killing native burrowing birds on the island.

Conservationists intervened with a cat eradication programme in the late 1980s to save the endangered bird species

this has led to an explosion in the rabbit population, which is killing native plantlife

conservation agencies must learn from the experiences on the island to balance the affects of removing alien species

The lessons for conservation agencies globally is that interventions should be comprehensive, and include risk assessments to explicitly consider and plan for indirect effects

Just ahead of the 725th anniversary of the Pied Piper reputedly banishing a plague of rats from Hamelin, there has been an "explosion" in the German town's rodent population, officials said.

The spokesman for the northern town said the sharp rise at an abandoned garden allotment site on the edge of the town was because the rats had a plentiful supply of food from an adjacent rubbish dump.

According to legend, a colourful or "pied" rat catcher lured all the rats out of town in 1284 by playing his pipe.

When the townspeople refused to pay him, he did the same with Hamelin's children and they were never seen again.

Climate change is bringing wetter winters to southern Norway, a bleak prospect for the region's lemmings.

Scientists found that numbers of the animals no longer vary over a regular cycle, as they did until a decade ago; there are no more bumper years.

The snow is not stable enough, they think, to provide winter shelter.

Writing in the journal Nature, the researchers suggest the lack of Norwegian lemmings is affecting other animals such as foxes and owls.

In boom years, lemmings are the most plentiful and important prey for these carnivores.

Until the mid-1990s, the lemming population in the study area in southern Norway varied on a cycle of three to five years.

Rather than hibernating, lemmings spend the winter living in the space between the ground and a stable layer of snow above.

Dry winters would allow large numbers to survive until spring, resulting in a population explosion.

The animals can live for three to four years making use of snow cover

The explosion of Catholicism in sub-Saharan Africa during the 20th century ranks among the greatest missionary success stories in church history. From a Catholic population of 1.9 million in 1900, the total for sub-Saharan African mushroomed to 139 million in 2000, a staggering growth rate of 6,70 percent. Moreover, almost half of the adult baptisms in global Catholicism occur in Africa, meaning that the growth of the church has been driven not merely by overall demographic trends but also by success in attracting new converts.

By 2050, three African nations will rank among the ten largest Catholic countries on earth: the Democratic Republic of the Congo (97 million Catholics), Uganda (56 million) and Nigeria (47 million). The traditional Catholic powerhouses of Spain and Poland, meanwhile, are projected to drop off the list.
