Aloe vera, garlic and green tea are the most popular herbal medicines used by Australians, according to a new study.

Professor Charlie Xue of RMIT University and colleagues report on the first study of its kind in the current issue of the journal Pharmacoepidemiology and Drug Safety.

Previous studies have shown a sharp increase in the use of herbal medicines by Australians, says Xue, who set out to understand more about how people were using them.

The study found that 22.6% of participants had used at least one of the herbs in the past 12 months, with the highest use among 35 to 54 year-olds who were university-trained, and those who earned between A$60,000 and A$80,000 per year.

Aloe vera, garlic and green tea were the most popular herbs, each used by about 10% of participants.

The study found that more than 90% of people felt their herbal medicine had been helpful in enhancing their general health and wellbeing, or providing relief from specific medical conditions.

The people vs. the electors

As everyone learned or was reminded of in the election of 2000, the Constitution doesn't say that the candidate with the most popular support has any claim on the Presidency. It says that the candidate with the most electoral votes will become president. So George W. Bush won the election fair and square, by the rules set forth in the Constitution

Actually, the last president to be elected by a majority of the voters was George H. W. Bush in 1988. In 1992 and 1996, Bill Clinton won with a plurality — more than any other candidate, but less than half of the total vote — because there were three major candidates. Because the third candidate, H. Ross Perot, failed to win a majority anywhere, he didn't win any electoral votes, and Clinton was able to win a majority of the electoral votes without winning a majority of the popular vote.

Barnett and Kaplan have come up with a system that would replace current winner-takes-all electoral voting with a “weighted vote share (WVS) system,” under which candidates' election showings become the average of their popular vote results in each state and the District of Columbia, weighted in order to reflect the individual state's proportion of total Electoral College votes. California's weight, for example, would be 10.2 percent, which represents its current share of electoral votes.

WVA, Barnett said in an interview, would not only avoid calamities such as that of Florida in 2000, where one candidate got 100 percent of the electoral vote even with lingering doubts about who really won the popular vote. It would also require candidates to pay serious attention to states they now often ignore.

Details of how to hack one of the world's most popular smartcards have been published online.

The research by Professor Bart Jacobs and colleagues at Radboud University in Holland reveals a weakness in the widely used Mifare Classic RFID chip.

This is used in building entry systems and is embedded in the Oyster card used on London's transport network.

Publication of the research was delayed by legal action taken by the chip's manufacturer.

"The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" is one of the best-known pangrams that is used to test the skills of typists and computer keyboard operators. Why? Because it is coherent, short and contains all 26 letters of the English alphabet.

The phrase is frequently misquoted as "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog," which lacks the letter 's' and is therefore not considered a true pangram. It was first known in the late 19th century and appears as a sample typing practice in L. Bronson's, Illustrative Shorthand, 1888. The pangram remains popular today and is still used to display font samples.
