But, if I had to guess, the year of the fashionable nun wasn't exactly what the Vatican had in mind. But, with or without the blessing of Pope Benedict XVI, 2008 will go down as the year of the fashionable nun (even if only in our collective memories).

Agyness Deyn on the cover of Pop Magazine, Fall 2008

High-fashion nuns took over Pop Magazine's myriad of Autumn/Winter '08 covers. A risque fitness club ad with nuns sketching a nude man angered the Boston Archdiocese. The Holy Father himself is consistently promoting such forms of consecrated life as something especially inspired by the Holy Spirit for the needs of our times. Miles Jesu works to promote unity and harmony in the Church by spreading the teachings of the Vicar of Christ

Pope John Paul II called Miles Jesu 'soldiers' ... the front-line soldiers who are essential in bringing the Catholic faith and Christ to the world. Miles Jesu is active in many countries around the globe, bringing Christ to the poor by meeting both their bodily and spiritual needs. This is the name of a whole system of control which can prevent a woman from leaving an abusive marriage and further cement her in place by burdening her with unplanned children. The control imposed by the Vatican disproportionately affects women. That's because the hierarchy of obedience which goes from the pope to the parish priest doesn't stop there: it continues on, from the head of the household down to his wife.

Women must be kept at home and bearing children for the Church. Ordaining them as priests would give them dangerous authority. On 29 May 2008 the Vatican issued a decree "Regarding the crime of attempting sacred ordination of a woman". This is such a grave offence that it incurs automatic excommunication, on a par with heresy, schism, and laying violent hands on the Pope.

Tags: dogma, women, religion

<clipSource>http://www.concordatwatch.eu/showsite.php?org_id=11701</clipSource>

The Extreme-Right Way To Make A Buck

clipped by: debbyski
clipper's remarks: "Actually, it's a little darker than that. Corsi doesn't just belong to the right's conspiratorial wing, he belongs to its racist, white-supremacist fringe. Over the last couple of years, he's written disparagingly about Muslims, Catholics and Jews, not to mention gays and lesbians. Muslims are "ragheads," the pope is "senile" and tolerates "boy bumping," and Jews ... well, you can imagine.

The fact of the matter is, though, that Corsi doesn't so much aspire to participate as he does to profit.

n former years, Americans' ideology was influenced by their participation in the economy. To put it crudely, businesspeople tended to find a home in the Republican Party, working men and women in the Democratic Party. Today, we have a new class, one to which Corsi and his ilk belong, whose business is their ideology."

Clip Source: www.latimes.com

"The Obama Nation: Leftist Politics and the Cult of Personality," occupies a class of its own. Corsi, you may recall, was the coauthor of "Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry," the campaign diatribe that slimed the decorated Vietnam War veteran and then-Democratic presidential candidate's war record.

Corsi is frank about his motives for writing "The Obama Nation." As he told the New York Times this week: "The goal is to defeat Obama. I don't want Obama to be in office."

That's clear enough from the text. You can pretty well sum the whole thing up this way: The Democratic candidate is a deceitful jihadist drug addict who, if elected, plans to impose a black supremacist, socialist regime.

What's far more interesting is how somebody like Corsi suddenly becomes a player in a presidential campaign.

If the music you seem to hear playing in the background sounds familiar, it's because ... yes, you've crossed over into the Twilight Zone.

Tags: that, piece, of, shit, and anyone, who, would, buy, his, book

<clipSource>http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/la-oe-rutten16-2008aug16,0,472577.column?track=ntothtml</clipSource>

He who prays never loses hope

clipped by: Efrain Alvarado

Clip Source: www.catholicnewsagency.com

Castelgandolfo, Aug 13, 2008 / 03:17 pm (CNA).- In Wednesday's general audience, celebrated in Castel Gandolfo, Pope Benedict XVI spoke about St. Teresa Benedict of the Cross, also known as St. Edith Stein, and St. Maximilian Mary Kolbe, whose feast days the Church celebrates in August.

“He who prays never loses hope, even when he finds himself in difficult situations.”

Pope Benedict added: St. Teresa Benedict of the Cross, whose feast the Church celebrated on August 9, and St. Maximilian Mary Kolbe, whose feast is tomorrow, the vigil of the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, are such examples in our time. Europe's "Christian values" should be enshrined in a new version of the EU constitution, the German chancellor declared yesterday after meeting the Pope.
In remarks which will reopen the debate on religion in the EU, Angela Merkel threw her weight behind Pope Benedict's campaign to recognise Europe's Christian heritage. "We spoke about freedom of religion," she said after talks at the Pope's summer residence near Rome. "We spoke about the role of Europe and I emphasised the need for a constitution and that it should refer to our Christian values."

<clipSource>http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2006/aug/29/germany.eu</clipSource>

Papist Picture of the Day

clipped by: Pope Benedict XVI has long been admirer of his 'theology of conscience'.

Cardinal John Henry Newman: Could become the first Englishman to be made a saint since 1970

Tags: cardinal, saint, english

<clipSource>http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1043447/A-grander-grave-English-cardinal-tipped-saint.html</clipSource>

Theistic Sanity

clipped by: AtlLiberal
clipper's remarks: It's not often that I agree with religious leaders but when I do it deserves to be pointed out. The point that Benedict makes of refuting the claim that evolution promotes atheism is of course correct. Although many, particularly in the States, believe otherwise. Unfortunately, the persons that fall into this category are also people that are the least informed on the subject.

Clip Source: zanesvilletimesrecorder.com

Subsidized atheism

I marvel at writers who refer to "evolutionists and their precious little theory." After 150 years, the Theory of Evolution is one of the most broadly accepted theories in all of science. How can any so-called educated person characterize the teaching of biological evolution as taxpayer-subsidized atheism?

Read below what an ultraconservative Christian spiritual leader has to say about this so-called controversy.

Pope Benedict XVI, 24 July 2007

This antithesis is absurd because, on the one hand, there are so many scientific proofs in favour of evolution which appears to be a reality we can see and which enriches our knowledge of life and being as such.

Now consider the lack of credibility of anyone who calls evolution atheistic. I doubt any sane person of whatever religious persuasion would call the pope an atheist. Does accepting the scientific theory (fact) that the earth travels around the sun and not the other way around make a person an atheist?

Tags: creationism, evolution, religion, atheism

<clipSource>http://zanesvilletimesrecorder.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080808/OPINION03/808080338/1014/OPINION</clipSource>

Bloody Frogs are asking for it, anyway

clipped by: cakebelly

Clip Source: www.timesonline.co.uk

Crucified frog sculpture near Pope's summer holiday base provokes protests

Local Catholics have complained to the police that the work by the German
artist Martin Kippenberger, on show at the Bolzano Museum of Modern Art, is
a "public obscenity". It depicts a bright green frog with its
tongue hanging out, nailed to a cross, with a beer mug in one outstretched
hand and an egg in the other.

Under pressure from Bishop Egger the museum curators have moved the frog from
the museum entrance to the third floor, but have so far refused to remove it
altogether. They said the work was not an attack on Christianity but rather
a reflection of the artist's “state of profound crisis” at the time.

Two years ago the Bolzano museum hit the headlines by displaying a work of art
consisting of a toilet flushing to the accompaniment of Italy's national
anthem.
