A Maranaw royalty, Concepcion was born in Marawi City, in the Island of Mindanao, Philippines. At 17, he left for the U.S. and studied at the San Francisco State University where he majored in Painting and Theater Design.

After graduation he joined the Warwick Theaters in New England as Set Designer. Concepcion later moved to Montreal, Canada to further his studies at the Ecole des Beaux Arts while at the same time serving as Art Director for Morgan’s Department Store and designing sets for Trinity Theater.
Fascinated by ancient history, Tomas travelled to Europe to tour museums. He was eventually lured to Italy where he attended l'Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome. He has remained in Italy ever since a

Don't take "holy" water onto pope plane

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican has warned journalists who will travel with Pope Benedict to Lourdes next month not to put the revered water from the shrine in their hand luggage on the papal plane or it may be confiscated.

The pope will travel Sept 12-15 to Paris and the site in southern France where the Madonna is said to have appeared to a peasant girl, Bernadette Soubirous, 150 years ago.

The millions of pilgrims who visit the shrine each year drink from its fonts, many believing its water to be potentially miraculous and healing. Most take bottles of it away with them.

With the Catholic church shrouded beneath a dark cloud of priestly misdeeds last year, one might think that shifting the focus onto something that doesn't involve alter boys would be a welcome distraction. But, if I had to guess, the year of the fashionable nun wasn't exactly what the Vatican had in mind. But, with or without the blessing of Pope Benedict XVI, 2008 will go down as the year of the fashionable nun (even if only in our collective memories).

High-fashion nuns took over Pop Magazine's myriad of Autumn/Winter '08 covers. "Miss Sister 2008," the first-ever nun fashion show was announced (and then quickly canceled) this past week. A risque fitness club ad with nuns sketching a nude man angered the Boston Archdiocese. Even model Eva Mendes recently revealed that she once considered the sisterhood (until she found out that there wasn't any money in it. Go figure!)

Women need secularism

These proverbs from Slovakia show the other side of "family values". This is the name of a whole system of control which can prevent a woman from leaving an abusive marriage and further cement her in place by burdening her with unplanned children. The control imposed by the Vatican disproportionately affects women. That's because the hierarchy of obedience which goes from the pope to the parish priest doesn't stop there: it continues on, from the head of the household down to his wife.

Women must be kept at home and bearing children for the Church. Ordaining them as priests would give them dangerous authority. On 29 May 2008 the Vatican issued a decree "Regarding the crime of attempting sacred ordination of a woman". This is such a grave offence that it incurs automatic excommunication, on a par with heresy, schism, and laying violent hands on the Pope.

Corsi, you may recall, was the coauthor of "Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry," the campaign diatribe that slimed the decorated Vietnam War veteran and then-Democratic presidential candidate's war record.

Corsi is frank about his motives for writing "The Obama Nation." As he told the New York Times this week: "The goal is to defeat Obama. I don't want Obama to be in office."

That's clear enough from the text. You can pretty well sum the whole thing up this way: The Democratic candidate is a deceitful jihadist drug addict who, if elected, plans to impose a black supremacist, socialist regime.

What's far more interesting is how somebody like Corsi suddenly becomes a player in a presidential campaign.

If the music you seem to hear playing in the background sounds familiar, it's because ... yes, you've crossed over into the Twilight Zone.

Pope Benedict added: St. Teresa Benedict of the Cross, whose feast the Church celebrated on August 9, and St. Maximilian Mary Kolbe, whose feast is tomorrow, the vigil of the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, are such examples in our time. The Pontiff reminded his audience that both saints were martyrs in the Auschwitz Concentration Camp, witnesses of the love which “defeats the darkness of egoism and hatred.” The Holy Father recalled words attributed St. Maximilian Mary Kolbe: “Hatred is not a creative force: only love is.” On August 14, 1941, the saint died in place of a fellow prisoner.

Europe's "Christian values" should be enshrined in a new version of the EU constitution, the German chancellor declared yesterday after meeting the Pope.

In remarks which will reopen the debate on religion in the EU, Angela Merkel threw her weight behind Pope Benedict's campaign to recognise Europe's Christian heritage. The remains of a Victorian cardinal tipped to become the first English saint for more than a generation are to be moved from a rural cemetery to a grand urban church.

After months of wrangling over a 19th century law which forbids the transfer of bodies from graves to church tombs, the Government has agreed to allow Cardinal John Henry Newman to be exhumed.

The Ministry of Justice will grant a licence from today - the 118th anniversary of his death in 1890 - to let undertakers move his remains from a cemetery in Rednal, Worcestershire, to a special resting place of honour at Birmingham Oratory.

It is a victory for the Vatican which wants Newman moved into a setting where he can better be venerated. Pope Benedict XVI has long been admirer of his 'theology of conscience'.

The point that Benedict makes of refuting the claim that evolution promotes atheism is of course correct. Although many, particularly in the States, believe otherwise. Unfortunately, the persons that fall into this category are also people that are the least informed on the subject.

Subsidized atheism

I marvel at writers who refer to "evolutionists and their precious little theory." After 150 years, the Theory of Evolution is one of the most broadly accepted theories in all of science. How can any so-called educated person characterize the teaching of biological evolution as taxpayer-subsidized atheism?

This antithesis is absurd because, on the one hand, there are so many scientific proofs in favour of evolution which appears to be a reality we can see and which enriches our knowledge of life and being as such.

Now consider the lack of credibility of anyone who calls evolution atheistic. I doubt any sane person of whatever religious persuasion would call the pope an atheist. Does accepting the scientific theory (fact) that the earth travels around the sun and not the other way around make a person an atheist?

Crucified frog sculpture near Pope's summer holiday base provokes protests

Local Catholics have complained to the police that the work by the German artist Martin Kippenberger, on show at the Bolzano Museum of Modern Art, is a "public obscenity". It depicts a bright green frog with its tongue hanging out, nailed to a cross, with a beer mug in one outstretched hand and an egg in the other.

Under pressure from Bishop Egger the museum curators have moved the frog from the museum entrance to the third floor, but have so far refused to remove it altogether. They said the work was not an attack on Christianity but rather a reflection of the artist's “state of profound crisis” at the time.

Two years ago the Bolzano museum hit the headlines by displaying a work of art consisting of a toilet flushing to the accompaniment of Italy's national anthem.
