I love Cakewrecks. I’m totally addicted. This week, they’ve highlighted a totally hideous Kwanzaa cake by Sandra Lee made with pre-made angel food cake, store-bought icing, and, obviously, corn nuts. Well, Sandra calls them “acorns” but the recipe calls for corn nuts. It also calls for popcorn and pumpkin seeds. It would appear the hate mail about this cake was so numerous that Food Network pulled the recipe, but with a little digging you can still find it floating around. In case you have always dreamed of a corn nut-cake hybrid, the recipe is at the bottom of the post.

It takes a lot these days for a horror movie to scare me, which is so surprising to me because horror movies used to scare the crap out of me when I was younger. I don’t know why I loved horror movies SO much when I was a child, because I had a really hard time sleeping in the dark after the scary movies were over.

Every weekend my two best friends and I would rent one of the Halloweens or Friday the 13th movies, pop some popcorn, turn off the lights, cuddle under a blanket and turn it on. My spot was always in the middle of the girls and everyone HAD to stay awake so I was sure not to be watching such a scary movie alone. Then afterwards, I would be scared for days from these movies that I subjected myself to.

NEW YORK – Everyone stood in the same spot to take a picture. It was a secluded area behind the clubhouse-turned-animal house where hundreds of glass empties littered the ground and new ones still popped like popcorn toward the end of a bag. Not only did the keepers of the trophy want to keep it clean, they knew there was no more appropriate place to pose than against a menacing jet-black wall with the New York Yankees’ logo in the middle.

The Empire struck back Wednesday night. It awoke from a nine-year dormancy and, after spending a billion dollars the last half-decade, got it right. It marched with renewed purpose, accompanied, it seemed, by the ominous music that trailed Darth Vader. And with a 7-3 victory to christen the new Yankee Stadium a home of champions in its first season, the Yankees beat the Philadelphia Phillies for their 27th World Series title and first since 2000.

Homemade Cracker Jack Popcorn

Homemade Cracker Jack

8 cups popped popcorn
1 cup peanuts (optional)
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup margarine
3 tablespoons corn syrup
1/4 teaspoon each salt & baking soda

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Arrange the popcorn (and peanuts, if you are using them) in a well oiled 9″ by 13″ pan. Get out a 2 quart sauce pan and combine the brown sugar, margarine, corn syrup and salt over low heat. After the margarine melts, cook without stirring for 3 minutes. It should be bubbling gently during the 3 minutes. Stir in the baking soda and vanilla. Quickly pour this over the pan of popcorn. Mix gently to coat the popcorn evenly. Bake the pan at 300 degrees for about 15 minutes. Break it up into pieces and serve. This stuff is so good and wont last long , but if you do end up with leftovers, store them in a sealed container, or bag. It is good tucked into lunch boxes too.

clipper's remarks: From the comments, I added one tsp. salt and 2 tsps. vanilla after the sugar mix came to a boil. Be careful because adding the vanilla will cause the sugar mixture to boil up and sputter. Also, I reduced the powdered sugar to 2 cups. It is plenty sweet.

Also, keep the popcorn warm while making the sauce in a 200 degree F oven.

I got 24 balls out of this and they taste FANTASTIC. Word from the comments is that the marshmallow keeps these from becoming rock hard like other popcorn balls. And, bonus, you do not need a candy thermometer.

I will make again very soon. Easy and tasty.

INGREDIENTS (Nutrition)

3/4 cup light corn syrup
1/4 cup margarine
2 teaspoons cold water
2 5/8 cups confectioners' sugar
1 cup marshmallows
5 quarts plain popped popcorn

DIRECTIONS

In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the corn syrup, margarine, cold water, confectioners' sugar and marshmallows. Heat and stir until the mixture comes to a boil. Carefully combine the hot mixture with the popcorn, coating each kernel.
Grease hands with vegetable shortening and quickly shape the coated popcorn into balls before it cools. Wrap with cellophane or plastic wrap and store at room temperature.

clipper's remarks: The Boondock Saints 1999.....It's particularly gory and bloody, but this just makes it all the more realistic. In real life, there is a significant amount of blood when someone is shot in the head. The movie has some Christian subtexts, I think I've heard about five major theories about the whole movie's meaning. This shows, in my opinion, that there was obviously a lot of thought put into the movie. I'd recommend it to anyone who can stand the gore, even if they aren't Christians. 10/10

Rated R for strong violence, language and sexual content.

Very intelligent action movie, about two Irish brothers who kill 'sinners' to punish them. The movie is a bit different from the typical action movie, as it doesn't have car-chases or explosions. The action consists of stylish shooting sprees. It also has a fairly original idea that is utilized in nearly every action scene in the movie, and that should be used more often in action films; first you see the aftermath, the crime-scene, the police investigating, counting bodies, etc. After/as the police come up with theories to the crime, we see the actual scene, of the brothers punishing criminals. It's a different kind of vigilante movie.

Nutritional features of corn

Do you know which grain crop is cultivated the most next to wheat in the world? It is none other than Corn.

However, these drawbacks do not delimit the many benefits that corn offer to the people consuming it.

Corn is a very good source of folate and thiamine. Also corn is a rich source for lutein, which is a powerful antioxidant that helps in lowering the risk of age-related macular degeneration.

Corn has high content of starch and protein. The lack of amino acids such as lysine and tryptophan can be overcome by supplementing corn with beans and other legumes to make a complete corn meal.

It has been found that a medium cup of corn contains as much as 83 calories. Corn is also a rich source of potassium, thiamine and fiber.

This air-popped corn, or simply, popcorn, contains rich fiber content with about 30 calories. However, popping the corn in oil and adding a tablespoon of butter sharply increases the calorie content five-fold.

'Cocoon' is the winner of Electrolux Design Lab 2009

'Cocoon' is a sustainable response to the world’s growing population and its desire to consume meat and fish. Similar to heating popcorn in a microwave, Cocoon prepares pre-packaged meat and fish dishes by heating muscle cells identified by radio frequency identification (RFID) signals. The signals detect the specific dish and then suggest the required cooking time. This process uses science to create food, lifting a burden on the planet by reducing the need for further intensive farming and fishing.

2 tsp. clear vanilla
1/4 c. water
1/4 c. evaporated milk
2 c. Crisco
1 tbsp. meringue powder
2 lbs. Domino powdered sugar, sifted
1/4 tsp. popcorn salt

Make sure bowl has no grease residue. Using electric mixer on medium cream Crisco, flavoring and salt. Add milk, water and meringue. Slowly add powdered sugar. Very stiff icing, used to decorate.
