Nigerian man to divorce 82 of his wives

A Nigerian religious leader with 86 wives has accepted an Islamic decree ordering him to divorce all but four of them, local authorities say.

A spokesman for the emir of Bida told the BBC that Mohammadu Bello Abubakar, 84, agreed on Saturday to comply with the decree.

Last week one of Nigeria's top Islamic bodies, the Jamatu Nasril Islam, sentenced him to death.

The sentence was lifted but he was threatened with eviction from his home.

Earlier, Mr Abubakar had challenged Islamic scholars, saying there was no punishment stated in the Koran for having more than four wives.

"I have not contravened any established law that would warrant my being banished from the land... There is no law that says one must not marry more than four wives," the AFP news agency reported him as saying.

Many of the wives live three to a room, some have seven children

The former teacher and Islamic preacher lives in Niger State with his wives and at least 170 children.

After accounting for socioeconomic differences, men aged over 60 from 140 countries that practice polygamy to varying degrees lived on average 12% longer than men from 49 mostly monogamous nations, says Virpi Lummaa, an ecologist at the University of Sheffield, UK.

Using data from the World Health Organization, Lummaa and Russell scored 189 countries on a monogamy scale of one to four - totally monogamous to mostly polygamous. They also took into account a country's gross domestic product and average income to minimise the effect of better nutrition and healthcare in monogamous Western nations.

A 14-year-old girl allegedly married to jailed polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs with her parents' blessing at age 12 was removed from her family's home in Converse on Tuesday after a judge ordered her back into foster care.

District Judge Barbara Walther said that there was "uncontroverted evidence of the underage marriage" and that the girl's mother, Barbara Jessop, refused to guarantee the girl's safety. The girl, shown in photographs submitted to the court kissing Jeffs, was taken into custody by Child Protective Services.

In the case of the 14-year-old allegedly married to Jeffs, Walther said she felt she had to place the girl in foster care because Jessop "was unable to provide assurances that she'd be able to protect the child in the future."

On Monday, Jessop, 55, refused to answer roughly 50 questions asked by attorneys for Child Protective Services, including the names of her children, what constituted abuse and whether a parent had an obligation to protect her children.

Rather than a call to polygamy, the research might solve a long-standing puzzle in human biology: Why do men live so long?

This question only makes sense after asking the same for women, who - unlike nearly all other animals - live long past the menopause.

One answer seems to be a phenomenon called the grandmother effect. For every 10 years a woman survives past the menopause, she gains two additional grandchildren, Lummaa says. It seems that doting on and spoiling grandchildren aids their survival, as well as furthering some of their grandmother’s genes.

A poll of nearly 2,000 Britons by YouGov/PHI found that 70 per cent of respondents incorrectly said it was true that the US had done a worse job than the European Union in reducing carbon emissions since 2000. More than 50 per cent presumed that polygamy was legal in the US, when it is illegal in all 50 states. . . .

The survey showed that a majority agreed with the false statement that since the Second World War the US had more often sided with non-Muslims when they had come into conflict with Muslims. In fact in 11 out of 12 major conflicts between Muslims and non-Muslims, Muslims and secular forces, or Arabs and non-Arabs, the US has sided with the former group. Those conflicts included Turkey and Greece, Bosnia and Yugoslavia, and and Kosovo and Yugoslavia.

Just remember this when you hear about how little Americans understand about the world.

A Saudi Arabian man with kidney disease didn’t have to go on a waiting list to get a new kidney since both of his wives volunteered to donate one, each vying to outdo the other. “There was a degree of competition between the women as to whom the donor should be,” a Saudi newspaper reported. “(The) hospital administration was forced to draw lots between the two wives” to decide the second wife would be the donor.

Elizabeth Joseph was the keynote speaker at a conference of the Utah chapter of the National Organization of Women. She told attendees she has discovered the ultimate feminist lifestyle: polygamy. Nigerian Mohammed Bello Abubakar, 84, has advised other men not to follow his example and marry 86 women.

The former teacher and Muslim preacher, who lives in Niger State with his wives and at least 170 children, says he is able to cope only with the help of God.

"A man with 10 wives would collapse and die, but my own power is given by Allah. That is why I have been able to control 86 of them," he told the BBC.

"I don't go looking for them, they come to me. I will consider the fact that God has asked me to do it and I will just marry them."

But such claims have alienated the Islamic authorities in Nigeria, who have branded his family a cult.

As Mr Bello Abubakar emerged from his compound to speak to the BBC, his wives and children broke out into a praise song.

"I am now the happiest woman on earth. When you marry a man with 86 wives you know he knows how to look after them," she said.

Mr Bello Abubakar and his wives do not work and he has no visible means of supporting such a large family.

Scientists have recently discovered that polygamy is part of our human nature. This way we can find the reasons behind the fact that many of us get involved in the so-called love triangles. The current common-law trend marriage proves this. This trend once again shows: humans are naturally polygamous – since the common belief says that relationships which are not sealed by law provide extra freedom of action.

The most frustrating thing I experience in listening to the media talk about polygamy is how they reference the lifestyle according to mainstream society. If a man has more than one wife it has to be for the sex, if women all wear similar looking clothes they see it as a fashion, albeit an out-dated fashion. I read one article recently that called the FLDS women’s hairstyles Elvis prairie up-do. I understand that we can only comprehend the unfamiliar against the backdrop of our own familiar lives. But for the women of the FLDS to be compared to a heathen like Elvis is enough to send them all running to their mirrors to make alterations.

Polygamists offer prairie clothing for sale

Just in time for back-to-school shopping: authentic polygamist prairie dresses.

Apparently, all the publicity surrounding the ongoing investigation into alleged underage marriage among members of the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints (FLDS) on a Texas ranch has created some serious demand for prairie dresses.

So much so that the FLDS has launched an online store where members of the general public can purchase the dresses, long underwear, and other ranch-wear "as seen on TV."

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, the Web site FLDSdress.com, was initially created to give Texas authorities a place to purchase the clothing, so children in state custody could maintain their traditional clothing.

The Web site said the clothes are made to meet the "FLDS standards for modesty and neatness." And all of the clothes are hand-made "with joy and care" by the FLDS women.

In the meantime, FLDS women are sewing and selling their way to financial independence.

The Utah dental magnate uses his fortune to fight the sect and to help fellow outcasts.

SANDY, UTAH -- The polygamist sect preached that Dan Fischer was a heretic who had turned his back on God's chosen children.

But for Enos Deloy Steed, who was banished at age 17 for kissing a girl, Fischer was like a guardian angel, the kindest man he had ever met.

Steed's father disowned him and left him wandering southern Utah in search of menial work. Fischer gave him a place to live -- and volunteered to put him through college.

"He gives us a fair shot in the world, a chance to have a life, because he can relate," said Steed, now 22 and set to graduate in November. "It's really great that someone is willing."

Former FLDS members can count on loving support from Fischer, a onetime polygamist who invented a popular tooth-whitening formula in his barn and uses his resulting fortune to fight the sect and help fellow outcasts.

At least two senior leaders of the Islamic Community in Sydney are calling on the Federal Government to recognise polygamous marriage in order to protect the rights of women.

They know it is illegal in Australia but even so, the Islamic leaders say it is happening in their community and the Government should not turn its back on those who choose to do it.

Keysar Trad is the president of the Islamic Friendship Association of Australia and also known as the man who used to represent the controversial former Mufti of Australia Sheikh Taj el-Din al-Hilaly.

He says it is time Australia recognised polygamous marriages if that is the will of the woman.

"We, as a society, should say okay well if this woman has wilfully chosen to enter into this relationship, make a lifelong commitment to this person, to be married. It shouldn't matter," Mr Trad said.
