It is everywhere. Look around. Clear plastic bottles or cans made from polycarbonate with bisphenol A leashing into product it contain. Before it was fragile, but chemically stable, indifferent glass. Can we afford to pay with our health (and lives, after all) for this fruit of chemical progress? It damaging everything inside a body, it's just happen to discover some of its symptoms. What was impossible to suppress already...

Clip Source: news.yahoo.com

<img src="http://content9.clipmarks.com/image_cache/aklimento/512/977D7F03-7DE5-4D4F-BF37-E490979CFE1B.gif" alt="Yahoo! Apple Upgrades Mac Computers

The Mac laptop and desktop lineups receive a significant upgrade from Apple as Microsoft prepares to introduce Windows 7

Days before archrival Microsoft is set to release the next major version of its flagship computer operating system Windows, Apple unveiled a significant upgrade to its consumer personal computer lines, including a redesigned entry-level laptop and a desktop machine sporting a huge display. The product announcement comes a day after Apple's (AAPL) earnings report.

Chief among the new releases Oct. 20 is the MacBook, Apple's $999 entry-level laptop usually aimed at students and first-time Mac buyers. The new machine still sports a polycarbonate shell but now it's cut from a single piece of material and has rounded edges. And like the higher-end MacBook Pro, the new MacBook also boasts a long-life battery that lasts seven hours and a light-emitting-diode (LED) display.

avoiding BPA, you'll also get more nutrients and less sodium -- both steps
toward a healthier diet.

Breastfeed your baby, or use powdered formula instead of cans.

Avoid bottles and plastic containers that are made from polycarbonate

reduce exposure to phthalates, avoid polyvinyl chloride (marked with a number 3

Canada and some states are moving to ban polycarbonate plastic in baby bottles for that reason. But the new heart data suggest that even adult exposures to BPA might cause harm.

Based on such data, House Committee on Energy and Commerce chairman Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) and the committee’s Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee chairman Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) sent a letter on June 2 to FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg. It asks FDA to “reconsider the Bush administration’s position that BPA is safe at current estimated exposure levels.”

<clipSource>http://www.sciencenews.org/index/generic/activity/view/id/45214/title/Concerns_over_bisphenol_A_continue_to_grow</clipSource>

Environmental BPA is at Toxic Levels NOW!

clipped by: CulturalEngineer

Clip Source: www.sciencenews.org

    More troubling news about BPA

Heart arrhythmias in females and permanent, deleterious modifications of a gene that plays a pivotal role in reproduction are two new problems being linked to bisphenol A. Best known simply as BPA, this chemical is a building block of polycarbonate plastics — the hard, clear type used in kitchenware and baby bottles — and of resins used to line most U.S. food cans.

Data on BPA’s hormonal alter ego first emerged in 1938, when researchers reported the chemical could trigger biological changes normally seen with estrogen. That’s the primary female sex hormone. By the early 1990s, studies showing how strong this estrogen mimic is and how ubiquitous BPA has become began to trickle out — a flow that has since developed into a wholesale torrent.

BPA appears harmful even at concentrations present in the U.S. population,

So people should do what they can to reduce their exposures.

new data hint that people may face far larger BPA exposures than previously thought.

<clipSource>http://www.sciencenews.org/view/generic/id/44577/title/More_troubling_news_about_BPA</clipSource>

Drinking from Plastic Bottles 'Increases Exposure to Gender-Bending Chemical'

clipped by: JackieDel
clipper's remarks: BPA is also found in dentistry composites and sealants and in the lining of aluminium food and beverage cans.

Clip Source: www.alternet.org

Scientists have demonstrated for the first time that polycarbonate containers release the chemical bisphenol A (BPA) into liquid stored in them.

BPA has been shown to interfere with reproductive development in animals and has been linked with cardiovascular disease and diabetes in humans.

Altogether 77 students took part in the study after a seven-day "washout" phase in which they drank all cold beverages from stainless steel bottles in order to minimise BPA exposure.

Study author Karin B. Boston, MA -- A new study from Harvard School of
Public Health (HSPH) researchers found that participants who drank for a week
from polycarbonate bottles, the popular, hard-plastic drinking bottles and baby
bottles, showed a two-thirds increase in their urine of the chemical bisphenol
A (BPA). Exposure to BPA, used in the manufacture of polycarbonate and other plastics,
has been shown to interfere with reproductive development in animals and has
been linked with cardiovascular disease and diabetes in humans. The study is
the first to show that drinking from polycarbonate bottles increased the level
of urinary BPA, and thus suggests that drinking containers made with BPA
release the chemical into the liquid that people drink in sufficient amounts to
increase the level of BPA excreted in human urine.

Is it ok to drink water in plastic bottles?

We do not recommend water that is packaged in plastic - even the hard polycarbonate plastic that is popular in 5-gallon jugs that can be taken home and used with a water stand. The reason for our recommendation is migration of plastic compounds, including BPA. Even at room temperature, a very small amount of the plastic in the water container will migrate into the water and increase certain health risks. In some cases, the degree of risk here is very, very small (although more and more concern has been given recently to the hormonal impact BPA may have, especially on children). Nevertheless, since we drink (or should be drinking) water every single day of every single year, any amount of risk here seems worth preventing. Even though glass containers are very inconvenient and more easily broken, we believe that the additional trouble here is worthwhile in terms of health.
