While baking soda has long been thought to provide added benefit for athletes, new medical research shows that it definitely improves the performance of sprinters in events lasting up to 2 minutes. The results of the study should have immediate implications for runners, swimmers and athletes who play games like football and soccer. According to Polish Medical Translation professionals at the center that conducted the study, baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), increases blood bicarbonate, which acts as a buffer against metabolic acids. As a downside, taking baking soda can leave an athlete feeling nauseated.

Toppling of dominoes marks fall of Berlin Wall

Former Polish leader Lech Walesa tipped the first of 1,000 plastic foam dominoes set up where the Berlin Wall once stood as part of celebrations Monday marking the 20th anniversary of its fall.

The dominoes were conceived as a metaphor for the collapse of communism in the countries of eastern Europe after the Wall crumbled.

How long does OJ keep before it loses vitamins?

Since we're not big juice drinkers in our house, OJ usually only makes its way into our fridge when guests come to visit. Even then, it still takes us a few weeks to polish off the carton. I never thought much about keeping the OJ for a few weeks. After all, it still tastes good—and we usually finish it before the expiration date. Then I read this study that showed opened OJ loses all antioxidant benefit after just one week! Seriously? Well, as you can imagine, this led me to wonder if other items in my kitchen lose their health punch over time. (Spoiler alert: they do!)

Homemade furniture polish

clipper's remarks: I started replacing household cleansers with homemade stuff a few months ago and don’t plan on going back to the chemical soup that we have been led to believe we simply must have.

To clean windows and countertops use water, vinegar, and dish detergent, for example.

I just used this recipe for furniture polish yesterday and it really works.

I don't use many store-purchased products to do my cleaning. I always end up with terrible migraines or my lungs hurt from breathing in the cleaning product. When I take the time and effort to make my own cleaning products, life suddenly gets much better and healthier, at least in the cleaning department.

Baking soda, lemons, vinegar, and salt are four items that can basically clean everything in your house, from countertops to clothing. I love making homemade cleaning wipes, knowing that when I use them, I will not suffer the consequences of cleaning. I also like to make my own homemade furniture polish, since, in my opinion, I get a better clean and a better shine with homemade polish.

Anytime you want to polish your furniture, you should make a new batch, as the olive oil may become rancid if you only polish your furniture once a month.

Children at risk in Europe's modern slave trade

(Deutsche Presse-Agentur)- - Children across Europe are at risk from the continent's modern slave trade, according to international experts.

'What we're seeing is a lot of young persons trafficked within the region ... and sold into begging, prostitution and forced labour,' Lars Loof, head of the children's unit at the Council of Baltic Sea States, told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

'Few countries have any statistics on the trade, but as an example, Polish authorities say about 20 per cent of all victims of trafficking are under age,' he added.

Human trafficking is commonly defined as the trade, coercion and exploitation of human beings for sex, labour or the removal of organs. According to a recent report by the Council of Europe, it is 'the modern form of the old worldwide slave trade.'

Bleach

Treat immediately in copious amounts of cold water. For chlorine bleach, add 1 Tbsp. vinegar in each 600 mls water. If the colour has been removed by the bleach, it cannot readily be restored, but try holding in fumes from an open bottle of ammonia.

Blue

Rinse fresh marks in cold water. Soak any more difficult stains in a solution 1 Tbsp. vinegar in 1200 ml of warm water. Wash as usual.

Boot Polish

Sponge with a laundry pre-soak (spot stain remover) or with dry cleaning fluid.

Ball-Point Ink

Baby Oil

Rub some dishwash liquid into the stain, leave for 10-15 minutes, then hot wash (60-65°C) using your normal laundry detergent. If any stain remains, repeat the process. For unwashable fabrics or articles, see under Butter.

Alkalis

Alkalis, such as washing soda and ammonia, or cuticle remover, may destroy colour and rot material. Rinse at once in equal quantities of vinegar and water. Rinse well in warm water. If colour has been affected this cannot be corrected.

Man cleared of kicking bucket

A Polish man has finally cleared his name after an 18-month legal battle in which he was accused of kicking his neighbour's bucket.

Legal sources blasted the decision to prosecute Waldemar Wilk, 55, of Mikowice, for damaging a plastic bucket worth less than £3.

Neighbour Alicja Tomankiewicz had claimed that Mr Wilk had kicked the bucket so hard it landed on a bush outside their block of flats.

The case was referred to a municipal court, where he pleaded not guilty, claiming that Mrs Tomankiewicz was still using the allegedly damaged bucket.

He even presented video evidence - taken on his mobile phone - in court.

The court called a video expert, who testified that it was impossible to date the mobile phone footage which could have been taken before Mr Wilk kicked the bucket.

Legal wrangling held up the case and in April, Mr Wilk demanded an expert carry out an experiment to see whether a kick could damage a plastic bucket.
