Relatives of Brazilian Ademir Jorge Goncalves, 59, had identified him as the victim of a Sunday night car crash in the southern state of Parana, police said.

As is customary there, the funeral was held the following day, which happened to be the holiday of Finados, when Brazilians visit cemeteries to honour the dead.

What family members did not know was that Mr Goncalves had spent the night at a lorry park talking to friends over drinks of a sugarcane liquor known as cachaca, his niece Rosa Sampaio revealed later.

He did not get word about his own funeral until it was already happening Monday morning.

The bricklayer then rushed to the funeral to let family members know he was not dead, a police spokesman in the town of Santo Antonio da Platina said.

So the 13-year veteran - her smarts already proved as a Mensa member - took the Pennsylvania State Police's promotions exam, scoring sixth out of 2,000 test-takers.

But, despite her scores and an unblemished disciplinary record, her bosses passed her over for promotion. Male co-workers joked about her sex life. Colleagues accused her of cheating on the exam. Superiors suspended her, stripped her of her badge and gun, transferred her and tried to fire her.

Eighth-graders Cassandra and Aliyah Russell of Chicago never imagined they'd be arrested in their school cafeteria, much less for throwing food.

But that's just what happened following lunchtime mayhem last Thursday at the Perspectives Charter Middle School, south of Chicago. More than two dozen students, ages 11 to 15, were rounded up by police, arrested and charged with misdemeanor reckless conduct.

"They took us to jail, fingerprinted us, mugshotted us, or whatever, all because of a food fight...I was arrested. Handcuffs on," 13-year-old Cassandra told ABC News.

"We were suspended, went to jail and now have to go to court," said 14-year-old Aliyah.

The sisters' mother, Erica, told ABC News she's stunned.

"Who does that? Lock children up for throwing a carrot, a biscuit, milk, Jello," she said. "Who does that?"

The Russell sisters returned to school today after finishing a three-day suspension for their part in the food fight.

800,000 Americans Busted Annually for Pot

Seven million Americans have been arrested since 1995 on marijuana charges and 41,000 of them are rotting in federal and State prisons — but the public is starting to rebel against “the preposterous war on pot,” two political scientists say. Thousands of other pot users and sellers are confined in local jails as well.

“People convicted of possessing even one ounce of marijuana can face a mandatory minimum sentence of a year in jail, and having even one plant in your yard is a federal felony,” progressive organizer Jim Hightower and co-author Phillip Frazer point out in the November issue of “The Hightower Lowdown.”

Police arrest someone in America every 36 seconds on marijuana charges, with a record 872,000 arrests made in 2007, “more than for all violent crimes combined,” Hightower and Frazer point out. They note that 89 per cent of all marijuana arrests “are for simple possession of the weed, not for producing or selling it.”

State to 'spy' on every phone call, email and web search

Every phone call, text message, email and website visit made by private citizens is to be stored for a year and will be available for monitoring by government bodies.

All telecoms companies and internet service providers will be required by law to keep a record of every customer’s personal communications, showing who they have contacted, when and where, as well as the websites they have visited.

Despite widespread opposition to the increasing amount of surveillance in Britain, 653 public bodies will be given access to the information, including police, local councils, the Financial Services Authority, the ambulance service, fire authorities and even prison governors.

They will not require the permission of a judge or a magistrate to obtain the information, but simply the authorisation of a senior police officer or the equivalent of a deputy head of department at a local authority.

Maine police have issued the state's first Amber Alert for a missing 2-year-old girl who was taken by her father after he allegedly assaulted the girl's mother at her Sanford apartment.

Authorities are searching for 38-year-old Gary Traynham and his daughter, Hailey, who was taken from her mother at 11:15 a.m. Monday.

This is the first Amber Alert issued in Maine since the system went into effect in December of 2008.

Police believe Traynham and the girl may be in eastern New Hampshire.

Traynham is driving a 1998 green Dodge 1500 pickup truck with Maine registration 8629NB.

He is described as 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighing 230 pounds with balding brown hair, hazel eyes and a dark goatee. Police say the girl has shoulder-length blond hair and blue eyes.

The state's subpoena, wielded to stall justice and intimidate those who seek it, sets a terrible precedent. Lawyer Barry Scheck says that in his seventeen years at the Innocence Project in New York, he's never seen a subpoena of this nature directed at journalists or lawyers. Concludes Jonathan Turley, a constitutional law expert at George Washington University, "It creates an enormous chilling effect that's positively glacial."

It's shocking that the state would rather keep an innocent man behind bars than admit a mistake.

There's a very important editorial in The Nation this week that I hope everyone will take the time to read. It's about the wrongful conviction of Anthony McKinney, who's been in prison for thirty-one years for a murder he did not commit. I'm posting the relevant portions below.

On the evening of September 15, 1978, a white security guard named Donald Lundahl was murdered in a robbery gone awry in a racially fraught southern suburb of Chicago. Police fingered Anthony McKinney, an 18-year-old African-American with no criminal record, as the killer. The prosecution sought death by lethal injection; the judge sentenced McKinney to life in prison.

Egypt (AINA) -- On October 24, 2009 Egyptian State Security arrested a Christian Copt in the village of Deir Samalout, Samalout, Minia province, for praying "without a license." He was held in prison for two days before being released on "compassionate grounds." Maurice Salama Sharkawy, 37 years old, had invited Pastor Elia Shafik, to conduct the sacrament of the 'Anointing of the Sick' for his sick father, who had suffered a stroke. State Security broke into his house while the prayers were ongoing, handcuffed Maurice, put him into a police car and took him to a police station for interrogation.

Authorities accused him of carrying out "religious rites without a license" and "causing sectarian sedation" by calling a priest into the village. A number of his cousins living in the same family house and who attended the prayers were also detained with him.

State Security has placed Maurice under observation by three policemen.

Sporadic gunfire could be head as Mexico's Head of National Security urged people in a televised address 'to remain calm and eat an enchillata.' Attempts to bribe the zombies reportedly failed when Treasury Secretary Juan Corona attempted to meet with the zombies and was promptly eaten.

Flu zombies reported in Mexico City as residents brace for another night of horror!

Mexico City - Another night of looting and burning is expected as fearful residents of this once bustling city brace themselves for the expanding legion of Flu Zombies roaming city streets.

According to police captain Hector Gomez, the official head count on the zombies is about two million and growing everyday. An eyewitness says they appear to only roam at night and have caught several unsuspecting citizens while out foraging for food.

Mexican police after doing the Mexican Hat Dance in order to confuse the zombies. All were eaten.

The army has been called up but without protective masks they too fall ill and are neutralized by the sickness. One estimate puts the sick toll at 4.5 million with at least another million to fall by tomorrow.

DUI suspect to cop: 'Dude, I do this every night'

A northwest Indiana man was arrested early this morning near Portage for driving with a blood-alcohol level almost four times the state's legal limit of .08 percent.

"Dude, I do this every night; I'm straight up and not drunk!" Zachary R. Duis told an Indiana state trooper after he was pulled over, police said.

Duis, 24, of Portage, was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He was also wanted on two warrants out of Porter County for resisting law enforcement and furnishing alcohol to a minor, both misdemeanors.

About 2:20 a.m., the Porter County sheriff's department received a call about a 1995 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck driving erratically, state police said. A sheriff's deputy pulled the truck over on State Road 149 and 1000 North.

Duis failed field sobriety tests and was taken to the Portage Police Department for a certified breath test, state police said.

Duis was later taken to the Porter County Jail.

clipper's remarks: As a group of soldiers were preparing to be deployed to Iraq from Fort Hood in a special commissioning ceremony today, the officer opened fire killing 12 follow soldiers and injuring 32 others. A local police officer who was on contract with the military to provide law enforcement at the base shot and killed the suspect. At least 2 others involved in the shooting have been apprehended. It is unclear as to the level of involvement of the 2 or whether or not other suspects are at large.

Although most responsible news outlets are withholding the name of the deceased shooter in the Fort Hood military base massacre in Texas, we can confirm that he was a military officer, an Army Major from Virginia, who had converted to Islam.

Sources state that the officer was to be deployed to the Iraq War and was extremely upset about it.

It is unclear as to any direct connection between the deceased suspect and Al Qaeda. We do know, however, that radical Muslims will often recruit military personnel not only for conversion to Islam but for carrying out acts of terrorism against the U.S. military...from within.

The objective is to infiltrate military bases and the ranks of the armed forces for the specific purpose of 'taking them out from within.'

Man turns up at his own funeral

A Brazilian man surprised his friends and family - by turning up at his own funeral.

Relatives of Ademir Jorge Goncalves, 59, a bricklayer, had identified him as the victim of a car crash in Parana state.

Police told O Globo newspaper that relatives had trouble identifying the body because it was badly disfigured.

It emerged that Mr Goncalves had spent the night drinking a rum-like liquor called 'pinga' with his friends.

He did not get word of his funeral until it was already happening, according to his niece Rosa Sampaio.

She said some family members - including herself and the man's mother - had doubts, but an aunt and four friends had positively identified the body.

"What were we to do? We went ahead with the funeral," she told O Globo.

A police spokesman welcomed the happy ending: "Before long, the walking dead appeared at the funeral. It was a relief," he said.

The body was correctly identified later, he said, and buried in another state.

I was sent the now notorious “police spotter card” through the post. It’s an official laminated card for “police eyes only” and labelled as coming from “CO11 Public Order Intelligence Unit”. The card contained the photographs of 24 anti-arms trade protesters, unnamed but lettered A to X. My picture appeared as photo H. You can imagine my reaction at finding I was the subject of a secret police surveillance process … I was delighted. I phoned my agent and told him I was suspect H. He replied: “Next year we’ll get you top billing … suspect A.”

This kind of highly confidential document – pictured above – is rarely seen by the public.

These so-called “spotter cards” are issued by police to identify individuals they consider to be potential troublemakers because they have appeared at a number of demonstrations.
