The words of a poem are written in lines, which may or may not be sentences.

The FORM of a poem is the way the poem looks and how it is arranged on the page.

A poem's form consists of lines and stanzas.

Lines are grouped into stanzas. Each stanza may have a uniform or varied number of lines.

Let’s look at how two different poets use lines and stanza breaks to emphasize the meaning of their words. The following two poems are called lyric poems. Lyric poems don’t tell a whole story. They tell the speaker’s thoughts and feelings in a particular moment.

Rhyme is the repetition of the same sound. Often, traditional poems contain rhyme at the ends of lines. This pattern is called a rhyme scheme.

The rhythm of a poem is the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables. In a poem, rhythm: • Creates musical quality • Defines mood • Emphasizes ideas. Poetry using rhythm that is like everyday conversation is called free verse.

I was listening to something on the radio the other day (or did I read it?) where a poet made an interesting comment within his explanation of what distinguishes "mere" poetry from great poetry. He said that part of the allure of flowers is that they are the beautiful proof of the existence of something living--something that is definitely going to die.

Autumn has always been my favorite season, and part of that might well be that I agree with his assessment. There is a poignancy in that fleeting life that accentuates their beauty, and the many tints and colors that plants take on during the last gasp of fall only serve to highlight that.

White Apples

Brad Pitt visited the Laguna Seca MotoGP this year, as the Hollywood star has always been open about his motorcycling interests. At the Yamaha pit stop on Valentino Rossi, Brad Pitt praised the rider, saying: “We’re public personalities, we shouldn’t have idols to venerate. But I have one that’s bigger than all the rest: Valentino Rossi. I would give anything to be like him. That guy is a real magician. He would be capable of hypnotising me. It doesn’t seem possible, because he looks like he weighs only 30 kilos, but he has a speed and balance.

He can lie on the track, next to the bike, but without falling. It’s a dance, it’s pure art. Rossi has won the eighth title without bragging. He remains calm, filled with a sense of internal balance that doesn’t seem human, he escapes mortality. For me, watching him in action, is like reading poetry.”

I have always been a fan of the written word. Even before I started my professional writing career I wrote. In school yes, but I wrote beyond what was required for classes. I wrote fiction stories and a little poetry but I mainly spent my time filling up diaries and journals. Even though I sometimes recalled day-to-day interactions most of my entries were about my feelings, trying to sort out the racing thoughts in my mind.

Obama’s Poems Show Real Talent

Of note, Politico observes that “the temperate legal language doesn't display the rhetorical heights that run through his memoir, published a few years later.”

But then somehow, those few years later, this 33 year-old amateur with no paper trail beyond a hack legal note and a poem about fig-stomping apes produced what Time Magazine has called--with a straight face-- “the best-written memoir ever produced by an American politician.”

The public is asked to believe that Obama did this on his own, almost as though he were some sort of literary idiot savant. I don’t buy this canard for a minute.

To enhance the science of this literary investigation, I made some inquiries into the academy. . .he encouraged me instead “to do what you're already doing . . . good old-fashioned literary detective work.”

Given that advice, I dug deeper into the memoir of the man who, I believe, tortured Dreams From My Father . . .

Prior to 1990, when Barack Obama contracted to write Dreams From My Father, he had written very close to nothing.

As an undergraduate at Occidental College, Obama had composed what he calls some “very bad poetry,” and he does not sell himself short.

In 1981, Occidental’s literary magazine published two of Obama’s poems—“Pop” and “Underground.” These poems are only a little sillier than the average undergraduate’s, but they show not a glint of promise. From “Underground”:

Los Angeles media critic Kevin Roderick rightly described the exposure of Obama’s two published poems as a “semi-cruel exercise."

In a similar spirit, the Independent of London headlined its article on Obama’s early poetry, “Pop goes myth of Obama the young prodigy.”

It would be another decade before Obama had anything in print and this a heavily edited, unsigned student case comment in the Harvard Law Review unearthed by Politico.

Attorneys who reviewed the piece for Politico described it charitably as “a fairly standard

Darn right. And that, doggone it, brings us to a shout-out for the latest virtuoso of Frontier Baroque, bless her heart, the governor of the Last Frontier. Her reward’s in heaven.

Hillary Clinton and John McCain ran against Barack Obama by sneering that their prose was meatier than The One’s poetry. Sarah’s running against the Democrat’s highfalutin eloquence by speakin’ in homespun haikus.

Talking at the debate about how she would “positively affect the impacts” of the climate change for which she’s loath to acknowledge human culpability, she did a dizzying verbal loop-de-loop: “With the impacts of climate change, what we can do about that, as governor, I was the first governor to form a climate change subcabinet to start dealing with the impacts.” That was, miraculously, richer with content than an answer she gave Katie Couric: “You know, there are man’s activities that can be contributed to the issues that we’re dealing with now, with these impacts.”

Big Foot Lee & D.W. Bucks: 7 Killings In 2 Weeks

7 Killings in 2 Weeks is the twisted creation of horror filmmaker D.W. Bucks and music producer Big Foot Lee of Feet 1st Productions. Having first worked together on the trailer for Bucks' film Destined to be Ingested, the pair hit it off and set off in search of a new music project.

Each track has a unique feel and vibe: “Mark of the Vampire” has a sensual, Gothic feel, “Plan Nine” is all juicy horn blasts and quotes from the awesome Criswell, and my personal fave “Blood Feast” uses a sweet, DJ Shadow trip-hop vibe to set up some brilliantly-edited layers of samples that actually make H.G. Lewis's crap dialogue (“It has not been served for five... thousand... years!”) sound like beat poetry.
