Last week, I visited a longtime KVIE member to deliver Dr. Wayne Dyer’s DVD and book set. It was one of those 100-degree Sacramento days. She was weary from the day’s projects plus months of displacement from home renovations. Plastic covered the furniture, boxes littered the floor, and she and her husband were banished to one end of the house.

Juliana Wetmore was born in 2003 with a very rare genetic craniofacial disorder known as Treacher Collins Syndrome.
The girl has no face literally, she’s missing 30–40% of bones in her face.
According to doctors, the case of Juliana is one of the most difficult in the world. She breathes through a tracheotomy and is fed by gastrostomy. She has already undergone more than 20 plastic surgery operations and very soon she will have to have many many more.
Doctors will never be able to give the girl a new face, but they could at least partially restore her skull and facial bones.
« Our ultimate goal for Juliana is for her to be happy with who she is. She will be able to achieve any goal which she sets for herself or any obstacles put before her. We have no doubt that she can achieve this because she is so incredibly intelligent”, said Juliana’s parents.

Ever wonder how sharks stay so squeaky clean, while whales and other sea creatures attract barnacles and other critters? That smooth skin inspired Sharklet Technologies, which based a new bacteria-busting film on it. And the Navy’s going to put it on their boats.

Researchers have been designing products inspired by or flat-out aping mother nature for years, a process called biomimicry. Sharklet Technologies is the latest to employ biomimicry, having studied the pattern of shark skin and printed it on a thin film in order to repel smaller bugs—bacteria.

Popular Science notes that the film, which is covered with microscopic diamond-shaped bumps, is the first “surface topography” proven to keep the bugs at bay. In tests in a California hospital, for three weeks the plastic sheeting’s surface prevented dangerous microorganisms, such as E. coli and Staphylococcus A, from establishing colonies large enough to infect humans.

Why We Use Mentor Breast Implants

Plastic surgeons in the U.S. have two choices of manufacturers for breast implants that are FDA approved. Both companies (Mentor and Inamed) are responsible and make excellent products, but in our opinion, Mentor's are better. All of our board certified plastic surgeons use Mentor implants almost exclusively. Here's why:

Mentor's implants have a lower deflation rate, which means that our patients are less likely to experience the need for secondary surgery due to deflation.
In our experience, the outer edge (shell) of the Mentor implant is less likely to wrinkle when implanted.
Again, due to differences in the shell, we find that Mentor implants are less palpable (less able to feel the edges) once they are implanted.

Please understand that all implants can occasionally leak, wrinkle, or are palpable.

A thousand miles off California, the North Pacific Ocean Gyre contains one of the largest ecosystems on Earth--but it may be in danger from a deluge of accumulated plastic trash. Dubbed the "Great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch," the debris at the center of the North Pacific Ocean has the potential to damage marine life and alter the biological environment.

From August 2-21, 2009, a group of doctoral students and research volunteers from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego embarked on an expedition aboard the Scripps research vessel New Horizon exploring the problem of plastic in the North Pacific Gyre

How much plastic is accumulating, how is it distributed, and how is it affecting ocean life? With their new results the researchers hope to provide critical, timely data to policy makers and combine Scripps' long tradition of Pacific exploration with focus on a new and pressing environmental problem.

NEW YORK – Male factory workers in China who got very high doses of a chemical that's been widely used in hard plastic bottles had high rates of sexual problems, researchers reported Wednesday.

The men in the study experienced BPA levels about 50 times higher than those faced by typical American men, said researcher Dr. De-Kun Li. "We don't know" whether more typical doses have similar effects, he said.

BPA is used in a wide variety of consumer products, including some hard plastic bottles and metal food or beverage cans. Several makers of baby bottles recently said they had stopped using the chemical. Some 90 percent of the U.S. population carries detectable levels in the urine.

The U.S. government recently announced new funding for research into BPA's effects.
