The latest trend in retail is not hot, new concepts. It’s
cold, dark stores.

Shopping center owners and developers in Kansas City and across the country
are grappling with rising vacancies as retail chains shutter underperforming
stores and, in some cases, go out of business.

In recent months, big-name retailers such as
Starbucks, Ann Taylor, Pier 1
Imports and Home Depot have announced plans to close
hundreds of stores as battered consumers tighten purse strings.

<clipSource>http://www.kansascity.com/business/story/777167.html</clipSource>

Alaska Chooses Largest Gold Mine Over Clean Water

clipped by: papananook
clipper's remarks: Suggest you read it all--Sarah Palin supported this minin project--ooops, there go the Salmon in that area...some more info on the "Independent" Alaskan voters:
But on Aug. 26, Alaskans voted down a ballot measure that proponents had cast as crucial to the future survival of Bristol Bay salmon. Ballot measure 4, which survived a challenge that went all the way to the state Supreme Court to remain on the state's primary ballot, would have prohibited large metal mines from contaminating salmon streams and drinking water sources. Though by law the ballot measure couldn't name a specific project, everyone knew it was aimed at the proposed Pebble Mine, which if developed as planned would be North America's largest open pit gold mine, also mining copper and molybdenum (a crucial element in steel).

Clip Source: www.alternet.org

Alaska is one step closer to approving Pebble Mine, which threatens the world's largest salmon fishery and native communities.

The spawning of salmon is something of a primal, epic drama. After spending their life of several years in the sea, the fish make their way up streams to the places where they were born. They don't eat, all their energy focused on their single-minded goal of spawning, after which they will die. Their flesh turns red from the effort, and hormones cause the males to develop a hump and a sinister-looking, toothy hooked beak.

The salmon life cycle is also part of the cycle of life for thousands of Alaska natives and Alaskans in general. Bristol Bay is known as the world's largest wild salmon fishery. With more than 30 million salmon worth hundreds of millions of dollars caught per year, it is a bedrock of commercial fishing and Alaska natives' subsistence fishing as well as a popular sport-fishing destination.

<clipSource>http://www.alternet.org/water/96843/</clipSource>

shellessworks

clipped by: GeKu13

Clip Source: www.shelllessworks.com

The planet is also well-endowed with ice, which has collected in large sheets near its north and south poles. Yet a key ingredient for life as we know it -- liquid water -- remains elusive.

But what if fire met ice in the Martian north? On Earth, volcanoes sometimes erupt beneath glaciers, melting huge quantities of water and spawning massive floods. Lakes of meltwater are sometimes pinned at the bottoms of glaciers.

Could the same happen on Mars? If so, it might be one of the best places to look for alien life. Now a new study published this month in the planetary science journal Icarus claims to have found evidence of just such an event in the Abalos region, at the edge of the northern ice cap.

Tags: mars, life, glaciers, volcanoes, science

<clipSource>http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2008/09/05/mars-fire-ice.html</clipSource>

Herbarium Amoris

clipped by: RayWatkins

Clip Source: www.herbariumamoris.se

Herbarium

Especially when I see the statistic that only 29% of people who haven't graduated high school have Internet access.

Is the real issue education? Is it not that some groups don't have access to the Internet, but that the lack of quality education they receive leads them to not realize or understand why access to information on the net is so valuable?

I don't know the answer to the question, but I do know our public school systems are terrible in many places. Maybe we need to focus on educating our youth. If we don't, even if they do get Internet access, what will they really do with it?

Clip Source: news.cnet.com

Overwhelmingly, these unconnected individuals tend to be minorities and people with low education levels. A recent study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that only 57 percent of African Americans and 37 percent of Hispanics have Internet access. And only 29 percent of people who have not graduated from high school are connected to the Internet.

There's been a lot of chatter over the years about the digital divide or the idea that there is a great chasm between people who have access to technology such as computers and the Internet, and those who do not. While some 68 percent of the U.S. population has access to the Internet via broadband or dial-up connections, there are still millions of people across the country who do not have any access at all.

<clipSource>http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-10033386-94.html</clipSource>

Dining Options at Squaw Valley

clipped by: odiedog
clipper's remarks: Options for places to dine at Squaw Valley and the surrounding area.

Clip Source: www.gotahoenorth.com

As such, IUI is typically used to treat male infertility, specifically disorders relating to the testes and sperm production.

Your doctor will decide whether or not to use fertility drugs to stimulate ovulation during IUI. If so, these generally involve injections; eggs are then tracked through vaginal ultrasound scans. When the eggs mature, a hormone is injected to stimulate the ovary to release the egg.

Tags: fertlity, infertility, iui, ivf, treatment

<clipSource>http://www.conceivingconcepts.com/learning/articles/iui.html</clipSource>

Sample

clipped by: sumank

Clip Source: www.crunchbase.com

I decided years ago I have NO respect for the culture of Aboriginees because of its many taboos that fall the most heavily on women. Aboriginal Australians are free to protect their beliefs and way of life, to pursue claims to regain and protect their native lands, and of course to exercise the free speech that is valued by their opressor's culture more so than their own. No way, however, am I going to regard their beliefs, practices or artifacts with hushed awe. Unlike an acquaintance of mine who decorates her home with a number of Aboriginal-themed items (not authentic as far as I know), I have a distaste for those motifs, due to my unwillingness to glorify a culture that places such rigid strictures on its women.
