Watermelon-Rum Mash

Serves 8

Drink up and get a healthy dose of cancer-fighting lycopene.

6 fresh shiso (or mint) leaves, plus 8 additional sprigs for garnish
12 3/4 cups (2 3/4 qt) cubed seedless watermelon, pureed and strained (makes 1 1/2 qt juice)
1 2/3 cups white rum (or to taste)

Crush shiso in the bottom of a large pitcher, using a long wooden spoon. Add watermelon juice and rum; stir. Serve over ice; garnish with shiso sprigs.

THE SKINNY 169 calories per serving, 0.3 g fat (0 g saturated), 15.8 g carbs, 0.8 g fiber, 1.3 g protein

Jamaican Rum Punch

Years ago, while on vacation at Jamaica's Round Hill resort, Allysa Torey sampled a fruity rum punch that she has since adapted at home. "I don't know exactly what the bartender used, so I've made my own version." Always choose a cocktail that goes with the meal you are serving!

INGREDIENTS

2 cups rum
1/2 cup dark rum
1/2 cup peach schnapps
1/2 cup Triple Sec
1/2 cup Rose's Lime Juice
1 1/2 cups pineapple juice
1 pineapple wedge (for garnish)
1 maraschino cherry (for garnish)

DIRECTIONS

1. Combine 2 cups rum with 1/2 cup each dark rum, peach schnapps, Triple Sec, and Rose's Lime Juice.
2. Pour 1 1/2 cups pineapple juice in a separate, smaller pitcher. This step can be done ahead.
3. Stir the pineapple juice into the rum mixture until combined.
4. Fill the cocktail shaker with ice, add about 1 cup of the rum mixture until combined.
5. Pour into an ice-filled glass.
6. Drop a maraschino cherry and place a fresh pineapple wedge on the rim to garnish.

Pudgey is a 13-time Gold Glove winner and 14-time All Star. Pudge is currently batting with a .295 average. He has 5 home runs and 32 RBIs. This is the guy the Tigers traded for a relief pitcher. We don’t need a relief pitcher quite as much as we need a whole new pitching staff, but c’mon. We couldn’t get anyone better than Kyle Farnsworth? That’d be like trading A-Rod for Edgar Renteria. It’s just plain stupid and the Tigers are going to suffer because of their blatant stupidity.

The Yankees have acquired catcher Ivan Rodriguez from the Tigers in exchange for pitcher Kyle Farnsworth, major-league sources have confirmed.

The deal, first reported by ESPN.com, will give the Yankees a complement to Jose Molina, and likely jeopardize the roster spot of Chad Moeller.

The Yankees have wanted a catcher ever since losing Jorge Posada to a season-ending shoulder injury.

The trade was made possible, in part, by the Yankees' acquisition of left-handed reliever Damaso Marte from the Pirates in a six-player deal last Friday night. That gave the Yankees the depth to trade Farnsworth, who — like Rodriguez — is a free agent at the end of the season.

Cranberry-Apple Sangria

This special variation of sangria would be the perfect complement for South Beach Seafood Paella. Try orange wedges and green apple chunks for a beautiful garnish.

Ingredients:

4 oz. canned cranberries, pureed

1 bottle of Chardonnay

1 bottle of White Zinfandel

2 oz. Tuaca liquor

1 mini-bottle (approximately 1 2/3 oz.) of Sour Apple Pucker

1 mini-bottle (approximately 1 2/3 oz.) of Triple Sec

4 oz. cranberry juice

2 oz. orange juice

Orange wedges and green apple chunks for garnish

Preparation:

Place the canned cranberries in a blender and puree for approximately 4-5 seconds. The mixture should not be totally smooth. Measure out 4 ounces.

In a two-quart container or pitcher, combine all the ingredients.

Stir well and store in refrigerator until ready to serve.

Serve approximately 6 ounces of the beverage over ice in a tall glass. Garnish with a fresh skewer of fruit using the orange wedges and green apple chunks.

Bialetti makes an espresso easily with water and stove!

Bialetti is just a simple moka pot and is brews espresso on top of a stove. But, perhaps is the hourglass shape or the cute little man **, this moka pot makes a good espresso. I did not use the word great on her, because she produces about 1.5 to 3 atmosphere of pressure, not the best for a great espresso, but enough to get the texture, body and emulsion of an espresso.

How to use "L'Omino"

1. Begin the brewing by removing the middle filter and filling the bottom chamber with water until it reaches the safety valve.

2. After that, insert the filter, fill it with your choice of coffee ground. Try to distribute the ground uniformly on the filter.

3. Secure the pitcher like top chamber by screwing it tightly.

4. Place the bialetti on the stove top over slightly higher than medium fire.

Cherry Orange Sorbet

2 c fresh/frozen cherries
2 c orange juice

2 tbsp fresh lemon juice

Put everything into a food processor and puree.

Transfer to a pitcher, and p

our the mixture into 2 ice-cube trays and freeze it until firm.

When you're ready to serve the sorbet, transfer the fruit cubes to a food processor. Pulse them, in short bursts, to make smooth sorbet.

Serve & eat immediately.

Creamy Peach Sorbet

1 c coconut milk
1 large banana

3 peaches

Baseball diamonds are a left-hander's best friend. That's because the game was designed to make a lefty the "Natural," according to David A. Peters, Ph.D., the McDonnell Douglas Professor of Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, and uber baseball fan. Peters is a mechanical engineer who specializes in aircraft and helicopter engineering and has a different approach to viewing America's Favorite Pastime.

"Ninety percent of the human population is right-handed, but in baseball 25 percent of the players, both pitchers, and hitters, are left-handed," said Peters, a devoted St. Louis Cardinal fan who was at Stan the Man's last ball game at Sportsman's Park in 1963.

"There is a premium on lefthanders for a number of reasons. For starters, take seeing the ball.

"A right-handed batter facing a right-handed pitcher actually has to pick up the ball visually as it comes from behind his (the batter's) left shoulder.

Ambidextrous pitcher's pro debut brings game to standstill

Switch-hurler, developed by dad, plays cat-and-mouse with switch-hitter

Baseball has thousands of rules developed over its history to solve most any dilemma, but when a switch-hitter came to the plate to face a switch-pitcher in a minor league contest last night, the game came to a standstill.

In his professional debut, Pat Venditte of the Staten Island Yankees – a natural right-hander whose father taught him to pitch with either arm – played cat-and-mouse in the ninth inning with the Brooklyn Cyclones' Ralph Henriquez as each player tried to gain an advantage, holding up the game for seven minutes

With a custom-made glove, Venditte switched hands each time Henriquez switched sides of the plate, seeking an edge based on the conventional baseball wisdom that left-handed batters fare better against right-handed pitchers and vice versa.

Video of the faceoff has been posted online.
