One of the solutions they’ve come up with is DRM protection on digital files. DRM refers to digital rights management, a generic way to refer to all the access control technology used by copyright holders and publishers to keep unauthorized people from using a file. These methods are used to impose limits on their digital content. Many companies, including Microsoft, Sony, the BBC, and others, are making use of this technology.

Tags: how to remove drm, remove drm software, drm removal, unprotect drm

<clipSource>http://removingdrm.org/</clipSource>

Piracy increased in days after Pirate Bay closed

clipped by: LONDON (AFP) - A boat belonging to a British couple feared kidnapped by pirates has been found by the Royal Navy, though the owners were not on board, the Ministry of Defence said Thursday.

"The MoD can confirm that during counter-piracy operations overnight a Royal Navy ship encountered the yacht owned by Paul and Rachel Chandler.
In the height of her power, former prostitute controlled more than 1,500 ships and had manpower of 80,000 sailors which was one of the biggest naval army in history of the world.
Federal authorities took longtime fugitive Luis Pena Soltren, who had been living in Cuba, into custody on Sunday for his role in the Nov. 24, 1968, hijacking. The flight had originated in New York and was headed to San Juan, Puerto Rico, when it was diverted.

Soltren was apprehended at John F. Kennedy International Airport, the same airport where authorities say he and accomplices boarded a Pan American flight and hijacked it armed with guns and knives.

Federal prosecutors say that Soltren "terrorized dozens of passengers" during the hijacking.

Tags: hijacker

<clipSource>http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,564082,00.html</clipSource>

Funny-Adds

clipped by: wiganfootie

Clip Source: fotozup.com

Silk Soft – 100% Recycled (99% say the ad is sick)

queer-travel.de – the Other Side of America

Rimmel Quick Dry Nail Polish

3M Security Glass Ad – break it and you can take the money!

Kalahari.net – Piracy Is Killing the Movie Industry

Bergmann & Sohn funeral services – Come A Little Closer

123fleurs.com – Flowers Would Have Been a Better Idea

BETA – Adopt a Dog. The govt will have already booked the licensee for selling to an intoxicated person.

Clip Source: www.abc.net.au

A trial in Sydney could determine whether internet service providers (ISPs) can be held responsible for their users' pirated content.

One of Australia's largest ISPs, the Perth-based iiNet, is being sued by a consortium of film distribution companies.

The movie houses say the internet company has not been doing anything to stop its customers from illegally sharing movies and TV programs on the net.

But iiNet says if the movie company's demands are met, it would breach privacy laws and freedom of speech.

The case went before the Federal Court in Sydney this morning.

The entertainment companies compiled their evidence by hiring two investigators to subscribe to iiNet, to get accounts there and then begin trading files using different BitTorrent networks.

They kept track of what movies and TV shows they were sharing, when they downloaded them and the ID numbers of the computers they were sharing these files with.

Tags: idiots

<clipSource>http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/10/06/2706449.htm</clipSource>

Who Are The Real Pirates In Africa's Waters?

clipped by: thisnamecantbetaken
clipper's remarks: Like the pirates of the ``golden age’’, today's Somali pirates see themselves as fighting for justice. As Sugale Ali told the October 1, 2008, NYT: ``We don’t consider ourselves sea bandits. We consider sea bandits those who illegally fish in our seas and dump waste in our seas and carry weapons in our seas. We are simply patrolling our seas. Think of us like a coast guard.’’

``The truth is, if you ask any Somali, if getting rid of the pirates only means the continuous rape of our coast by unmonitored Western vessels, and the production of a new cancerous generation, we would all fly our pirate flags high. It is time that the world gave the Somali people some assurance that these Western illegal activities will end, if our pirates are to [cease] their operations. We do not want the EU and NATO serving as a shield for these nuclear waste-dumping hoodlums.’’

Clip Source: links.org.au

Who are the real pirates in Africa's waters?

Victims of Western plunder

Today’s Somali pirates have been victims of the devastation that neoliberal globalisation has wrought on Africa, the destruction of local fisheries by industrial fishing techniques and one of the most hushed-up aspects of globalisation: the dumping of the first world’s toxic and nuclear waste in vulnerable Third World locations.

Western journalism has emphasised one side of

the rise of piracy: ready access to arms and lack of governmental authority.

the other side:

illegal vessels coming to Somali waters and stealing all the fish.

foreign illegal fishing in Somali waters nets more than $300 million a year.

and

European companies

paying warlords about $3 a ton

But this theory, which some Russian analysts put forward in the days after the Arctic Sea was rescued and which Kouts agreed with in his interview with TIME, has been vehemently denied by Russia's envoy to NATO, Dmitri Rogozin, who says Kouts should stop "running his mouth."

The official explanation coming out of Moscow is simple enough: the Arctic Sea, manned by a Russian crew, set sail from Finland under a Maltese flag on July 22. It was destined for Algeria and carried less than $2 million worth of timber. Then a group of eight Russian and former Soviet hijackers boarded the ship on July 24. The ship's tracking device was disabled in the last days of July [...] and the ship disappeared. On Aug. 12, the Russian navy sent out a search party.

Why, with so many other ships carrying much more valuable cargo, would the hijackers target the Arctic Sea and its small load of timber?

Clip Source: www.time.com

In July, the Russian-manned cargo ship the Arctic Sea disappeared on its way to take timber from Finland to Algeria

Experts and observers weighed in with their theories: the ship had been snatched in a commercial dispute; it was being used to run drugs; it was carrying something more precious — or dangerous — than timber.

Since then, the Russian navy has found the ship, and the alleged hijackers who boarded it on July 24 have been charged with kidnapping and piracy.

An initial search of the hull turned up nothing suspicious, and now Russia's official explanation of what happened will probably become the final one — this was a hijacking thwarted by its navy without a shot being fired

But there are baffling details left unexplained, leading some experts to claim that the truth is much more sinister: the Arctic Sea, they say, was intercepted by Israel as it carried a secret cargo of weapons to the Middle East

Tags: israeli interception of the cargo, not just piracy, russian manned vessel arctic sea, sending missiles to middle east

<clipSource>http://www.time.com/time/printout/0,8816,1919342,00.html</clipSource>

International Talk Like a Pirate Day

clipped by: carrerinyes
clipper's remarks: Tar, me boys

Clip Source: en.wikipedia.org

Is WGA a legitimate anti-piracy tool or is it spyware?

This latest class-action lawsuit (it’s not the first to target WGA) claims that Microsoft made false claims regarding what information WGA would send to verify the authenticity of a Windows installation. Specifically, the lawsuit highlights that Microsoft claims that no personal information is sent during validation, while in fact WGA is said to provide information on the user’s IP address and other details that could be used to trace the user.

The complaint goes on to state that Microsoft described WGA as a necessary security update rather than highlight to users that it was an anti-piracy update. Also, the way WGA means that users are prevented users from removing it from their PCs following installation.

Spyware (81%)

Legitimate tool (19%)

Tags: w'g'a'spyware'or'legitimate'tool?

<clipSource>http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=5369</clipSource>
