How Do You Convert DRM Files?

With electronic music files becoming more popular, and piracy so common, it’s not really surprising that music companies have been worried about their profit margins. One of the solutions they’ve come up with is DRM protection on digital files. DRM refers to digital rights management, a generic way to refer to all the access control technology used by copyright holders and publishers to keep unauthorized people from using a file. These methods are used to impose limits on their digital content. Many companies, including Microsoft, Sony, the BBC, and others, are making use of this technology.

Piracy increased in days after Pirate Bay closed

SHUTTING down individual websites does nothing to stem the flow of piracy, according to a computer security report.

The report, released by security software vendor McAfee, shows a spike in the number of websites hosting copyright infringing content in the month that infamous file-sharing website The Pirate Bay was shut down.

The site was forced offline in August by a Swedish court order following a legal battle with motion picture and music industry groups.

The Pirate Bay came back online a short time later, but, according to McAfee, there was a significant jump in new file-sharing sites during the downtime.

"The Pirate Bay example shows how difficult it is to 'stop' data once it is on the web," the report said

McAfee said file sharers had worked to make data on The Pirate Bay available elsewhere.

LONDON (AFP) - A boat belonging to a British couple feared kidnapped by pirates has been found by the Royal Navy, though the owners were not on board, the Ministry of Defence said Thursday.

"The MoD can confirm that during counter-piracy operations overnight a Royal Navy ship encountered the yacht owned by Paul and Rachel Chandler. It was found in international waters," the ministry said in a statement.

"Paul and Rachel Chandler were not on board the yacht and we do not have any reason to believe they have been harmed.

"Royal naval vessels operating with our international partners under European Union, NATO and combined maritime forces will continue to play a full role in efforts to secure Paul and Rachel's release."

The Motion Picture Association has sent one of its big shot lobbyists to New Zealand to advocate tougher anti-piracy legislation, and to promote a propagandistic comic book set be handed out to thousands of local kids. Interestingly, the comic doesn’t touch the subject of copyright. Instead it uses false threats to scare children and parents about the dangers of file-sharing.

Surprisingly, the story itself has nothing to do with the consequences of copyright infringement. The comic book that is supposed to educate children about file-sharing is nothing more than a scary story about viruses, worms, trojan horses and identity theft.

NEW YORK — A man wanted since 1968 in the hijacking of Pan American Flight 281 to Cuba has been apprehended.

Federal authorities took longtime fugitive Luis Pena Soltren, who had been living in Cuba, into custody on Sunday for his role in the Nov. 24, 1968, hijacking. The flight had originated in New York and was headed to San Juan, Puerto Rico, when it was diverted.

Soltren was apprehended at John F. Kennedy International Airport, the same airport where authorities say he and accomplices boarded a Pan American flight and hijacked it armed with guns and knives.

Federal prosecutors say that Soltren "terrorized dozens of passengers" during the hijacking.

Pirates hit navy ship 'in error'

A group of Somali pirates has been captured after attacking a French navy ship by mistake, apparently thinking it was a harmless cargo vessel.

French military spokesman Admiral Christophe Prazuck said the pirates attacked in skiffs late at night some 500km (310 miles) off the Somali coast.

But the command and supply ship, the Somme, repelled the attack and chased the pirates, capturing five of them.

iiNet case could set piracy precedent

The laws are cockeyed. In Australia, if you go to the pub, get pissed, drive and have an accident, you can sue the licensee of the pub. The govt will have already booked the licensee for selling to an intoxicated person.

A trial in Sydney could determine whether internet service providers (ISPs) can be held responsible for their users' pirated content.

One of Australia's largest ISPs, the Perth-based iiNet, is being sued by a consortium of film distribution companies.

The movie houses say the internet company has not been doing anything to stop its customers from illegally sharing movies and TV programs on the net.

But iiNet says if the movie company's demands are met, it would breach privacy laws and freedom of speech.

The case went before the Federal Court in Sydney this morning.

The entertainment companies compiled their evidence by hiring two investigators to subscribe to iiNet, to get accounts there and then begin trading files using different BitTorrent networks.

They kept track of what movies and TV shows they were sharing, when they downloaded them and the ID numbers of the computers they were sharing these files with.

The 557-foot boat Eclipse, the price tag of which has almost doubled since original plans were drawn to almost $1.2 billion, set sail this week with a slew of show-off features, from two helipads, two swimming pools and six-foot movie screens in all guest cabins, to a mini-submarine and missile-proof windows to combat piracy.

Was Russia's 'Hijacked' Arctic Sea Carrying Missiles to the Mideast?

But this theory, which some Russian analysts put forward in the days after the Arctic Sea was rescued and which Kouts agreed with in his interview with TIME, has been vehemently denied by Russia's envoy to NATO, Dmitri Rogozin, who says Kouts should stop "running his mouth."

The official explanation coming out of Moscow is simple enough: the Arctic Sea, manned by a Russian crew, set sail from Finland under a Maltese flag on July 22. It was destined for Algeria and carried less than $2 million worth of timber. Then a group of eight Russian and former Soviet hijackers boarded the ship on July 24. The ship's tracking device was disabled in the last days of July [...] and the ship disappeared. On Aug. 12, the Russian navy sent out a search party.

Why, with so many other ships carrying much more valuable cargo, would the hijackers target the Arctic Sea and its small load of timber?

Experts and observers weighed in with their theories: the ship had been snatched in a commercial dispute; it was being used to run drugs; it was carrying something more precious — or dangerous — than timber.

Since then, the Russian navy has found the ship, and the alleged hijackers who boarded it on July 24 have been charged with kidnapping and piracy.

An initial search of the hull turned up nothing suspicious, and now Russia's official explanation of what happened will probably become the final one — this was a hijacking thwarted by its navy without a shot being fired

But there are baffling details left unexplained, leading some experts to claim that the truth is much more sinister: the Arctic Sea, they say, was intercepted by Israel as it carried a secret cargo of weapons to the Middle East

Many of the pirates operating off the coast of Somalia were given special forces-style training from Western firms, a special report by Al Jazeera has found.

Some security firms currently protecting shipping from the pirates had been engaged to train them a decade ago.

One company, Hart Security, coached trainees to be the "coastguard" of Somalia's semi-autonomous Puntland region - providing protection from illegal fishing in the region.

In this exclusive report, Al Jazeera's Dan Nolan found that Western companies, involved at all levels of the business, can now expect to make up to half a million dollars from the average $2 million "ransom and release" contracts they are awarded to solve.

Last week Microsoft was sued in a Washington district court for allegedly violating privacy laws through its use of Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) anti-piracy mechanism in Windows XP. Is WGA a legitimate anti-piracy tool or is it spyware?

This latest class-action lawsuit (it’s not the first to target WGA) claims that Microsoft made false claims regarding what information WGA would send to verify the authenticity of a Windows installation. Specifically, the lawsuit highlights that Microsoft claims that no personal information is sent during validation, while in fact WGA is said to provide information on the user’s IP address and other details that could be used to trace the user.

The complaint goes on to state that Microsoft described WGA as a necessary security update rather than highlight to users that it was an anti-piracy update. Also, the way WGA means that users are prevented users from removing it from their PCs following installation.
