Afghan spider forces Army family out of home

Days after Rodney Griffiths returned home from a four-month tour of Helmand province with 16 Air Assault Brigade, the family's pet dog Bella mysteriously died.

Son Ricky, 16, then spotted the giant spider, prompting the soldier's wife Lorraine to move the family out of their four-bedroom army home in Colchester, Essex.

Mother-of-four Mrs Griffiths, 37, said: "Ricky saw a huge spider and screamed to his sister Cassie. They tried to put a pint-glass over it but it was too big, they poked it with a coat hanger and the spider bit it. The dog came in, jumped on the bed and barked at it. The spider hissed and Bella went running out whimpering."

After scouring the internet for spider descriptions they decided the culprit was a camel spider.

She said: "I think it must have hitched a lift back with my husband in June."

Beer Goggles Do Exist!

I just came across an article on MSNBC from earlier this month and it gave me quite a chuckle. The headline reads, "Hot or not? Look again —'beer goggles' are real!" Scientists in England are proving that beer goggles do exist. They gave 84 heterosexual college students lime-flavored drinks that were either alcoholic or non-alcoholic, a large glass of wine, or a pint-and-a-half of beer. After the booze set in, the students were given 40 images of other male and female college students. This probably won't come as a surprise to you, but both the men and women who drank the alcohol found the pictures of both sexes to be more attractive. According to Marcus Munafo, an experimental psychologist at the University of Bristol in England, it was "a roughly 10 percent increase in ratings of attractiveness."

Police confirmed Wednesday that they found about a pound of sodium cyanide in a Denver hotel room where the body of a Canadian man was discovered earlier this week.

Police spokesman John White identified the white powder as sodium cyanide, the crystal form of cyanide. Fire officials say they found a bottle containing about a pound of the white powder, or between a pint and a quart by volume.

An expert told the Denver Post that the amount of cyanide is enough to kill hundreds of people.

The medical examiner’s office said it is awaiting test results to determine whether cyanide killed 29-year-old Saleman Abdirahman Dirie, of Ottawa, Canada.

His body was found Monday inside Room 408 at The Burnsley Hotel, which is about four blocks from the state Capitol. White said Dirie had been dead for several days. Friends told The Ottawa Sun that he was dead six days before he was discovered.

Foul play is not suspected and his death appears to be an isolated incident

It’s summer and I know as well as you do that summer brings parties, BBQ’s and get-togethers. With all the bridal showers, bachelorette parties, and post-baseball trips to the bar, indulging in alcoholic drinks is something most of us like to do.

So how do we avoid sabotaging the hard work we’ve been doing?

Here’s a list of drinks to help keep your damage in check:

1) Rum & Diet Coke - if you can stand the aspartame, this one is only 65 calories.

2) Vodka & Soda - also 65 calories. Try it with flavored vodka to make it taste better!

3) White wine spritzer - 4 oz of white wine topped with soda - 80 calories.

4) Bloody Mary (1 oz. vodka, 4 oz. tomato juice, dash of Tabasco and pepper) - 90 calories

5) Lite beer - my favorite is Corona Light with a wedge of lime. 100 calories.

Blonde walks into an ice cream parlor on a hot day.

A restaurant owner has described laws which ban him from serving beer by the litre as "barmy" after he was threatened with court action.

Mr Davison

was told to change his glasses within 28 days or face a court hearing and a £2,000 fine.

"They're barmy laws, the laws are just silly, they've got to sort it out," he said.

Jane Miller, director for neighbourhoods at Doncaster Council, said: "In the UK, free-flow beer must be sold in stamped pint or half pint glasses. This ensures consistency all over the country.

clipper's remarks: Later, Seán's brother Gerry, who runs the pub, tells me an old Paddy Coyne's story. Long ago, there was apparently a "sign rivalry" between Mannion's in Clifden, Hamilton's in Leenane, and Paddy Coyne's in Tullycross, all of which were not only pubs but general merchants and undertakers. Mannion's traded under the slogan "For All Your Needs, from Maternity to Eternity". So, Hamilton's went one better: "For All Your Needs, from Womb to Tomb". Paddy Coyne and Sons thought hard, and eventually settled on their own slogan. "Paddy Coyne's - For All You Wish For, from Erection to Resurrection."

Perhaps it's no surprise, then, that there's storytelling going on here.

On a pint-sized stage

STORYTELLING: You never know what you might stumble upon on a stray night in Connemara. In this pub, drinking takes second place to storytelling

AROUND EIGHT O'CLOCK, it starts to get crowded. I've been sitting here, with my bottle of Miller and my Newsweek, for quite a while. In this Connemara pub, I couldn't look more like a blow-in if I had orange ears and five eyes.

But that doesn't matter. I know, because I've been coming to Paddy Coyne's in Tullycross for years, sitting by the fire in the cosy front room. I still smile when I see the sign over the bar: "No Credit Given to Women" (beside it there is one that reads simply, "No Credit"). Wednesday is the best night here.

Outside, there is a small blackboard with "Smoking Area" chalked on to it, and a sign pointing towards the "Beer Garden". Tonight, however, there is no beer garden. Under the hanging baskets and the old beer ads, there is a stage.

Roasted Red Peppers

Prepare brine: To 1 cup (250 ml) water, add 1 level tablespoon kosher salt and 1/2 level teaspoon Citric acid monohydrate, food grade. Also known as sour salt. pH will be 3 - 4 using pH paper.

Roasted Red Peppers

oast Peppers 30 minutes at 375 degrees F. Cool thoroughly in closed paper bag. Skin, core and seed. Cut flesh into suitable strips and place in sealable one-pint glass canning jars.

Add enough brine to fill jars. Process in boiling water bath 35 min at sea level to 450 feet above. Seal jar and allow to come to room temperature.

I store mine in the refrigerator: they tend to get used up pretty fast. Jars recycled from marmalade or preserves work fine for this if they have the safety snap-button feature on the lid.

I keep my paint brush with me

clipper's remarks: Whilst British politicians pontificate over what not to do about British (and largely immigrant) gangs carrying weapons, our Canadian cousins are wrestling with exactly the same problem. Why not take a leaf from New York. Increase and smarten up the local police force, then go for a zero tolerance regime on all criminals?
When I was a kid, in the most notorious neighbourhood in my home town, there was a police station at the top of our street. The local 'Bobby' was nicknamed Tiny. When we, the kids got out of hand, he would walk us home, gripping a lug-hole tightly. If the parents were not there Tiny knew where to find them. I saw him walk into the local boozer dragging an urchin by the lobe, point at a man at the bar and then to the door. The man tried to ignore Tiny, but the pint was taken from his hand and Tiny frogmarched the odd couple outside and all the way to the boy's home. 1 pint chicken broth
1 cup water
2 teaspoons taco seasoning
1/4 teaspoon dried minced garlic
1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes
1 cup frozen whole kernel corn
1/4 cup chopped red bell pepper
1/4 cup chopped green bell pepper
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 cup diced cooked chicken breast
8 ounces can red kidney beans, -- rinsed and drained
1 cup stewed tomatoes, coarsely chopped and undrained
1 1/2 ounce uncooked noodles

Ready in: < 30 minutes
Difficulty: 3 (1=easiest :: hardest=5)

In a large saucepan, combine chicken broth, water, taco seasoning, garlic, and parsley flakes. Add corn, red and green peppers, onion, chicken, kidney beans, and undrained tomatoes. Mix well to combine.

Bring mixture to a boil. Stir in uncooked noodles. Lower heat, cover and simmer for about 15 minutes, or until vegetables and noodles are tender, stirring occasionally.

"Rum grog was introduced into the Royal Navy in 1687. The ration then was one pint of neat Jamaican rum a day for each man and a half a pint for boys. In 1740 because of the incidence of drunkeness in the fleet, Admiral "Groggy" Vernon so named because of the grogram material from which his boat cloak was made, ordered the watering down of neat rum. The daily ration was later to become a Gill (one eight of a pint) of rum diluted with two gills of water and was nicknamed "Grog" after its initiator. The rum ration was discontinued in the Royal Navy in 1970.

Supermarkets Throwing Away 2 Million Tons Of Food A Year

At a Sainsbury’s superstore next to the Dome in Greenwich, South East London – the chain’s flagship “environmentally-friendly” shop with its own wind turbines – staff said it was standard practice to throw away food before its sell-by date. And they’re not even allowed to take it home.

One said: “Someone just stands there and throws it into the skip. We wish we could buy it – but we’re not allowed.”

Pointing to meat on the “reduced” shelf, he added: “Come midnight, anything that hasn’t been sold will get taken off the shelf... if it’s out of date it will be logged on the computer, put against our losses, then in the skip.”

Four-pint bottles of milk with nine days still to run had been thrown out, along with nine cans of cola with a date stamp of April 2009.

A Sunday Mirror investigation has found major chains dump enough food to feed 6.3million people a year.

And our check of supermarket bins found that much of the grub they chuck out is not even past its sell-by date.

This week Prime Minister Gordon Brown urged families to be more frugal and not waste their food – but our survey shows how stores are the real villains.

Last night Friends of the Earth called for tougher measures from the Government to force supermarkets to clean up their act.

“The true cost of this waste is passed on to customers in prices and the environment in landfill, while the supermarkets’ profits continue to soar.”

According to a report by the Sustainable Development Commission, supermarkets throw away 1.6million tons of food annually.

Workers told our reporters there were simply not enough staff to reduce the prices, so it was sent to landfill, often still wrapped in plastic – which will stop it rotting and take decades to decompose.
