Diprotodon superficially resembled a Rhinoceros without a horn. Its feet turned inwards like a wombat’s, giving it a pigeon-toed appearance. It had strong claws on the front feet and its pouch opening faced backwards. Footprints of its feet have been found showing a covering of hair which indicates it had a coat similar to a modern Wombat.

Drug-smuggling pigeon jailed

BOSNIAN police have impounded a pigeon after discovering prisoners used it to smuggle drugs into one of the country's highest security jails, an official said today.

"The guards suspected the animal might be involved in drug smuggling once they noticed four prisoners visibly intoxicated shortly after the pigeon landed on a prison window," Zenica prison official Josip Pojavnik said.

The drugs had probably been stuffed into tiny bags attached to the legs of the carrier pigeon, which one of the prisoners had previously been allowed to keep as a pet in his cell, he said.

"We suspect that the pigeon carried the drugs from Tuzla," a town around 70km north-east of Zenica in central Bosnia, he said.

The pigeon had been taken into custody by police, who have launched an investigation aimed at identifying those who had loaded it up with the drugs.

"We do not know what to do with the pigeon, but for the time being it will remain behind bars," Mr Pojavnik said.

NEW YORK - Pigeons come in many shades in New York City — but purple is typically not one of them.

That's why animal lover Joe Mora was stunned when he saw a pigeon at a Queens playground that had been painted a violet hue.

The pigeon was taken Friday to licensed wildlife rehabilitator Bobby Horvath. He said the bird is unable to fly because the feathers are completely rigid from the paint. But he says the animal is lucky its mouth or eyes didn't get stained.

American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals spokesman Joseph Pentangelo says if the bird was intentionally painted it "certainly" qualifies as animal cruelty.

Pigeons - Sustainable Food?

When you look at a pigeon, you might see a dirty, rat-like bird that fouls anything it touches with feathers or feces, but I see a waste-scavenging, protein-generating biomachine.

You see, city pigeons are the feral descendants of birds that were domesticated by humans thousands of years ago so that we could eat them and use their guano as fertilizer, we read in Der Spiegel. They're still doing their part, i.e. eating and breeding, but we humans have stopped doing ours, i.e. eating them.

Of course, the obvious objection is that pigeons carry disease, but some evidence suggests that they aren't particularly susceptible to avian flu. As for the meat itself, I called up the FDA's food safety line to ask how pigeon compared, safety-wise, to your average factory-farmed pig or chicken, but after one-and-a-half hours on hold, the office closed down and I gave up.

So, go buy sustainablesquab.com and encourage your urban friends to make omnivorism local. Just remind them: Pigeons are fowl.

Pigeon bones prepared by Charles Darwin are on display for the 150th anniversary of the idea of evolution by natural selection, co-discovered by Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace.

Evolution by natural selection was an idea revealed to the world 150 years ago tomorrow, by 2 men, the famous Charles Darwin, and the not so famous Alfred Russel Wallace.

Wallace and Darwin both came up with biology's most important concept and their theory was presented to the Linnean Society in London on 1 July 1858.

The carriers were caught....their bird backpacks discovered...an inmate's relative was also nabbed leaving the prison with two pigeons in a box.

clipper's remarks: Question: If pigeons are more self-aware than a 3 year old, what value is in self-awareness. And if any value at all, should that not be applied to pigeons. Is self awareness the deciding factor in the value of a species? We value humans above lower life forms typically because we are "superior" and "self-aware". If self-awareness is part of the equation of the value of the sanctity of life, then would not pigeons be more valuable than infants? (Note; I am not a vegetarian, just a devil's advocate and this idea struck me the moment I read this article and thought it would make a great debate topic). This question boils down to: What right do we have at placing value on life, when it has the same basic similarities to our own? I do not have an answer myself, but would love to see it debated.

Pigeons Show Superior Self-recognition Abilities To Three Year Old Humans

ScienceDaily (Jun. 13, 2008) — Keio University scientists have shown that pigeons are able to discriminate video images of themselves even with a 5-7 second delay, thus having self-cognitive abilities higher than 3-year-old children who have difficulty recognizing their self-image with only a 2 second delay.

The pigeon was trained to discriminate two types of video images in the following method. First, live video images of the present self (A) and recorded video images of the pigeon that moves differently from the present self (B) are shown. When the pigeon learns to discriminate these two images, the video image of (A) is shown with a temporal delay, so that the monitor shows the image of the pigeon a few seconds before. If the pigeon remembers its own movements, it can recognize it as self-image even with the delay.
