The Teddy Bears' Picnic

Our thematic unit for the first week in September is Bears.
I send a note home the previous Friday explaining our plans for a week long Bear unit, a fun hall display homework activity and asking for treat donations for our culminating activity~~OUR TEDDY BEAR PICNIC. CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE NOTE TO PARENTS.

Each student brings a bear from home to visit for the week. Only bears with good manners get to stay for the week. Those with disruptive behavior need to be sent home. Usually the kids (I mean the bears...) handle their visit well and all bears are able to visit the whole week. On Friday we
make our own Bear Ears to wear and read The Teddy Bears' Picnic. We sing the song, and then take our bears out to the playground to have our Teddy Bears' Picnic. It is always a favoite activity that the kids remember at the end of the year!

To be a happy camper, remember:

- A tuba placed on your picnic table will keep campsites on either side vacant.

- A large carp can be used for a pillow.

- You can get even with a bear who steals your food by going to his favorite stump and eating the ants.

- The guitar of a noisy teenager makes excellent kindling.

- You can duplicate the warmth of a down-filled bedroll by climbing into a garbage bag with two geese.

- A two-man pup tent should not be used either by two men or a pup.

- You'll never get lost if you remember that moss always grows on the north side of your compass.

I enjoy communing with nature. I just don't like it when nature tries communing back.

I don't care for hiking. The longest hike I ever made was trying to find my car in a Wal-Mart parking lot.

Sad story-Shame on such people....

France is to impose a "picnic tax" on plastic cutlery and plates as part of a drive to cut down on waste, but the unlikely levy has stuck in the throat of "pique-niqueurs" across the country.

A tax of 90 cents (71p) per kilogram will be placed on plastic and paper throwaway cups

To general incredulity, the French environment minister, Jean-Louis Borloo, confirmed the so-called "taxe pique-nique" on Monday. "We're doing it," he declared.

A tax of 90 cents (71p) per kilogram (2.2 lbs) will be placed on plastic and paper throwaway cups from next year, aimed at cutting the average 360kg (793 lbs) of rubbish generated per person per year in France.

A raft of other "green" taxes may also be imposed, including on batteries, televisions, washing machines and fridges, with tax breaks offered for more environmentally friendly alternatives.

Recapping Palin's Secession Scandal

If you spent yesterday at a Labor Day picnic rather than at the computer, you missed the story that broke here regarding Sarah Palin's 1990s membership in the Alaskan Independence Party (AIP).

Note I said Independence not Independent. It's not just an "independent" party--it is a party whose explicit goal is to have a vote on Alaskan independence.

As user Liz Arnett first informed us yesterday morning, the AIP is a political party in Alaska whose motto is "Alaska First." It's goal is to have a vote on Alaska's state status so that Alaskans may decide whether the state should secede, become a territory, become a commonwealth, or remain a state.

Yesterday night, it was is confirmed that Sarah Palin and her husband were members of the AIP at least in 1994. Indeed, Palin reportedly attended the AIP convention.

Ballet Under the Stars allows Arizona communities to enjoy dance in a unique outdoor setting complete with a stage, lighting, costumes and beautiful Arizona weather. The program ranges from the classical to the contemporary and is fun for the whole family. Audiences bring picnic dinners and blankets or lawn chairs, and enjoy a family-friendly performance of classical and contemporary dance under the direction of Ib Anderson. In addition to the regular programming, children from nearby grade schools have the unique opportunity to create and choreograph a new dance work with the guidance of a team of Ballet Arizona dancers. Ballet Arizona dancers will spend several days working with the students to produce dances the children present at Ballet Under the Stars.

The club claims that local authority-imposed drinking bans are infantilising and go beyond their legal remit.

But Home Office statistics show that nearly half of all violent crime is linked to alcohol. Drinking in public is now restricted in 613 places in England and Wales.

James Panton, a Manifesto Club founder, said: "The picnic is an attempt to reclaim public space. Alcohol bans are the result of a top-down, bureaucratic definition of public space, and an over-the-top response to perceived antisocial behaviour and social breakdown.

He added: "The police should be concerned with people breaking the law, not with these so-called preventative measures. Cultural issues are not solved with blanket bans, but by political and social engagement for which we need a vibrant public sphere."

98 Peanut butter and cream cheese

Mix and sandwich between two good cookies. Or mix honey, lemon zest and cream cheese. You could use ginger snaps. Mmm.

Make it yourself if you have time; put in a really cold thermos - it will be slushy by the time you open it. Add a splash of champagne or gewürztraminer, maybe some mint, and eat like cold soup.

Take a one bottle of chilled champagne, pour it over some fresh strawberries and serve straight away, then drink the rest of the champagne.

96 Cake and berries

Cook a couple of pounds of berries with some sugar and a little water until they break down. Layer in a plastic container with slices of good pound cake. Pour any remaining juices on top.

97 Poached champagne strawberries with mint

This needs to be prepared on the morning of the picnic. Split and scrape two vanilla beans and add them to a pan containing about 600ml water. Mix in 200g caster sugar and the juice of a lemon and bring to a gentle simmer. Cook for 5 minutes and then add a generous kilo of strawberries, washed, trimmed and halved. Simmer for a minute more and then remove the pan from the heat and place contents in a cool, metal bowl. Chill in the fridge for a couple of hours before taking on picnic. When you're ready to eat, take a handful of chopped mint, a small bunch or so, and sprinkle liberally. Serve in bowls.
