clipper's remarks: While some people enjoy adding individuals to their images, others prefer to edit them out – as in the cases of these photographs of Joseph Stalin, Mao Tse-tung, Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini respectively. In each of the first three photos there was a political compatriot who, after falling from favor, was removed entirely from the scene and thus erased from a part of history. In the final image, a horse handler was edited out to convey a greater sense of grandeur. Perhaps it is simply selective and subjective, but it seems strangely fitting in some way that most of the edits of of American heroes are additive while those of other infamous world leaders are subtractive – but who knows what other manipulations we have yet to catch.

The goal: Movement painted onto a sharp background.

First, set the camera at a low ISO to allow for a high resolution/low “noise” photo. Shooting in RAW can allow you to further reduce any noise in post-editing. If you have a neutral density filter, use it, otherwise you can mimic that effect in Photoshop (tutorial to follow soon). Set the aperture to between f/8 and f/18, depending on the depth of field you’re looking for, and start with an exposure time of five seconds.

Why the five seconds “rule of thumb”? Exposure of between four and eight seconds produces moving subjects with less blurring and bolder colors. Shorter exposures tend to blur more, and longer exposures tend to wash out color and make moving objects disappear altogether.

Set the camera up, focus on the subject area, use the remote shutter release or set the timer, and tweak the exposure time (4-8 seconds) and aperture (f/8-f/18) as you go, to achieve the effect you’re looking for.

Reader Wayne sent us this photograph and explains, "I was walking along and texting. Not really paying that much attention. Then something caught my eye. I thought I was about to step in dog shit, but quickly realized it was a rat stuck in the sidewalk. A big rat. It had tried to squeeze through a crack in the sidewalk and failed."

Update 10/24: More Photoshopped Sad Rat photographs here, plus a poll asking what you would do if you saw a rat emerging from a sidewalk. And Wayne got back to our questions. He says, "It was on my block on the Upper West Side. 82nd Street between CPW and Columbus. I thought it was alive, but after getting up the nerve to poke it with a (long) stick, I realized he was dead. I did what any wonderful caring masculine New Yorker would do, I told the doorman about it and ran off to work. That night the sidewalk with spic and span. I hear the Eulogy was beautiful and moved some to tears."

This interesting set of images is circulating via email and online. According to the accompanying text, the images depict unusual dwellings that have been built in various "weird" locations.

However, while some of the images are genuine photographs and show real buildings, others have been digitally manipulated. Moreover, while some of the buildings are real, not all are actually used as houses.

Each image is discussed in turn below:

Manipulated:

This image is an entry in the Bizarrchitecture 3 Photoshop contest conducted by Worth1000. The entry was created by Norrit and is titled Bond Mansion.

Manipulated:

This image is titled Kjerag Tower and is also by Norrit. It was an entry in the Bizarrchitecture 4 contest at Worth1000.

Manipulated:

This image is yet another Norrit entry for Bizarrchitecture 4. It is titled Afrodite's Eye.

Real:

building is called Dar Al Hajar and is located in Yemen. The rock palace was built in the 1930's as a summer residence for the Imam Yahya

now houses a museum.
