Philadelphia funeral home admits plundering corpses, selling stolen body parts

PHILADELPHIA - Two brothers who ran a pair of funeral homes and a crematorium admitted Tuesday that they sold corpses to a company that trafficked stolen body parts, a macabre scheme that left families aghast and unclear about the fate of their loved ones.

Louis and Gerald Garzone pleaded guilty to charges including conspiracy, theft, abusing corpses and welfare fraud.

The brothers allowed at least 244 corpses to be carved up without families' permission and without medical tests, prosecutors said. Skin, bones, tendons and other parts — some of them diseased — were then sold around the country for dental implants, knee and hip replacements, and other procedures.

Some bodies were only torsos by the time the hacking was done, said Assistant District Attorney Evangelia Manos.

In Philadelphia, Mastromarino paid the Garzones and their partner, James McCafferty, more than $245,000 for at least 244 cadavers between February 2004 and October 2005, prosecutors said.

McCain campaign manager Rick Davis told Washington Post editors Tuesday that issues have an impact but not conclusive among undecided voters.

“This election is not about issues,” Davis said. “This election is about a composite view of what people take away from these candidates.”

Davis added that issues will no doubt play a major role in the decisions undecided voters will make but that they won't ultimately be conclusive.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― Gunfire rang out near a North Philadelphia playground, leaving one person in critical condition Tuesday.

Police said at least 15 shots were fired near an elementary school on the 700 block of East Thayer Street at about 2:30 p.m.

A 31-year-old male was rushed to Temple University Hospital in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the chest.

PHILADELPHIA -- Two people, including a Philadelphia police officer, suffered minor injures during a car chase on Sunday.

The chase began when a vehicle was carjacked at Eighth and Norris streets.

Police said there were two separate crashes during the course of the chase. One crash involved two police units at Girard Avenue and Carlisle Street, investigators said. A driver and cruiser also collided at Percy and Brown streets.

Scientists say they have taken a big step towards blocking a chemical vital to the growth of many cancers.

They have unpicked the structure of telomerase, an enzyme which, when active, helps keep cells in an "immortal" state.

The chemical is at work in more than nine out of ten types of tumour.

Researchers from Philadelphia's Wistar Institute, writing in the journal Nature, say their efforts could lead to drugs which switch it off.

All cells in the body have a natural clock - the telomeres - which shorten every time the cell divides.

The idea is that you could convert immortal cancer cells back into mortal ones by blocking telomerase in this way

Some cells, such as stem cells within the embryo, use the chemical telomerase to maintain telomere length.

Many tumours have hijacked the telomerase system to fuel their uninhibited growth.

The Wistar team has found a new way to map the structure of the most active part of the chemical.

Researchers have broken the code of an enzyme that plays a key role in the growth of most cancers, opening a path that could lead to a new class of anti-cancer drugs, according to a new study.

Other scientists who reviewed the study hail it as a breakthrough in fundamental cancer biology, but caution that much work remains before the exploit can be translated into next-generation therapies.

The enzyme, called telomerase, "is an ideal target for chemotherapy because it is active in almost all human cancer tumours, but inactive in most normal cells," says study leader Professor Emmanuel Skordalakes of Wistar Institute in Philadelphia.

"That means that a drug that deactivates telomerase would likely work against all cancers, with few side effects."

In cancer cells, however, telomerase is activated, allowing the disease cells to replicate endlessly and achieve what scientists call "cellular immortality," the hallmark of all cancers.

Within the last 24 hours, the archbishops of Denver, New York, Philadelphia and Washington D.C., along with Bishop William Lori have all publicly upbraided the Speaker of the House for her erroneous comments on the Church’s abortion teaching.

“What the Speaker had to say about theologians and their positions regarding abortion was not only misinformed; it was also, and especially, utterly incredible in this day and age.”

Archbishop of Washington D.C. Donald Wuerl also criticized Pelosi’s comments. The archbishop emphasized that elected officials have the right to address matters of public policy, but added “the interpretation of Catholic faith has rightfully been entrusted to the Catholic bishops.”

Pioneer Shister Inducted Into LGBT Journalists Hall of Fame

TVNewser's Gail Shister will be inducted into the LGBT Journalists Hall of Fame this afternoon at the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA) Convention in Washington, D.C. She'll be just the ninth inductee into the Hall of Fame.

"It means an enormous amount to me," says Shister. "I've been with the organization since the first year, I consider it my baby. I watched it grow, and I'm fiercely protective of it."

That first year was 1990, a few years after Shister became the first woman sportswriter at the New Orleans States-Item and later at the Philadelphia Inquirer. She was also among the first "out" reporters.

PHILADELPHIA -- A Philadelphia cabbie faces charges in a fatal hit-and-run that killed a boy and left the child's mother fighting for her life.

Police said they have 62-year-old Yves Aristilde, of the Olney section of Philadelphia, in custody.

Police said Aristilde is responsible for the hit-and-run crash that killed 5-year-old Terrell Elliott and left his mother, Dana Reynolds, critically injured.
