Material World this week comes from the British Association For The Advancement of Science's annual Festival of Science, taking place at the University of East Anglia in Norwich.

However, some subjects have traditionally been off limits; parapsychological claims for phenomena such as telepathy for example. Not any more. Before an audience at this year's Festival Quentin Cooper confronts a panel of scientific heretics and sceptics to assess just how much evidence there is for mind extending beyond the physical brain.

Various specialists in the field of geology participate in the research program during specific field seasons. Some studies focus on geological phenomena and the processes of deposition and alteration that are responsible for the current nature of the cave. Other specialists are more specifically interested in the concretions, their age, constitution, and the micro-elements within them, which provide indications of the surface at different times. The courses of running water are also observed since they can explain displacements of bones, the differential preservation of paintings and deposits in different zones, the mechanisms of concretion formation, the zones in danger, etc. These specialists intervene in both the study of the cave and in developing measures for its conservation.

Iwas water-skiing with my children in a light drizzle off Hyannis, Mass., last month when a sudden, fierce storm plunged us into a melee of towering waves, raking rain, painful hail and midday darkness broken by blinding flashes of lightning. The noctilucent or "night-shining" clouds are at an altitude of 47 to 53 miles (76 to 85 km), where meteors and bright aurora lights are not uncommon and the atmosphere gives way to the blackness of space. The clouds remain a scientifically baffling phenomenon more than 120 years after their discovery.

The clouds form at dizzying heights where the air is one hundred million times drier than the Sahara. By contrast, the common high-altitude cirrus clouds only reach heights of 11 miles (18 km) up.

People first spotted the noctilucent clouds a few years after the 1883 eruption of the Krakatoa super-volcano in Indonesia
