recycle orphan socks into unique pet beds that require more time than money to make

keep

a basket near the dryer to collect these socks as they appear

Random orphan socks make an inexpensive pet bed, perfect for outside.

Color-coordinated socks sewn into a pet bed make a decorating statement.

Materials:

orphan socks (or socks bought in a color theme, or outgrown socks)
polyester stuffing or recycled pantyhose with runs
needle and thread or sewing machine

Steps:

Place stuffing in the socks.

Tuck the toe around onto itself and sew it securely to start the spiral (figure A). You should end with the open end of the sock.

Figure A

Stuff the toe of the next sock into the open end of the first sock and stitch in place to secure. Continue adding socks, toe to open end, wrapping the tube around on itself to continue the spiral. Always sew the toe of the next sock into the open end of the previous sock.

turn the bed over and sew each row of socks together with a running stitch (figure B).

Officials May Evacuate New Orleans as Gustav Nears

clipper's remarks: If a Category 3 or stronger hurricane comes within 60 hours of the city, New Orleans plans to institute a mandatory evacuation order. Unlike Katrina, there will be no massive shelter at the Superdome, a plan designed to encourage residents to leave. Instead, the state has arranged for buses and trains to take people to safety.

Since the storm (Katrina), the Army Corps of Engineers has spent billions of dollars to improve the levee system, but because of two quiet hurricane seasons, the flood walls have never been tested.

Floodgates have been installed on drainage canals to stop any storm surge from entering the city, and levees have been raised and in many places strengthened with concrete.

Scientists cautioned that the storm's track and intensity were difficult to predict several days in advance.

The Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals planned to move animals to shelters elsewhere in the state and in Texas.

National Guard troops stand ready, batteries and water bottles are selling briskly, and one small-town mayor has spent a sleepless night worrying. The New Orleans area is watching as a storm marches across the Caribbean on the eve of Hurricane Katrina's third anniversary.

With forecasters warning that Gustav could strengthen and slam into the Gulf Coast as a major hurricane, a New Orleans still recovering from Hurricane Katrina's devastating hit drew up evacuation plans.

Taking no chances, city officials began preliminary planning to evacuate and lock down the city in hopes of avoiding the catastrophe that followed the 2005 storm. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin left the Democratic National Convention in Denver to return home for the preparations. Gov. Bobby Jindal declared a state of emergency to lay the groundwork for federal assistance, and put 3,000 National Guard troops on standby.

Forecasters said Wednesday that Gustav could strengthen to a Category 3 hurricane with winds of 111 mph

We like to record our lives for ourselves and for future generations. The days in which we had just one photo of grandpa sitting on a chair and grandma standing next to him – both wearing the most solemn expression - have gone, thank goodness! Let’s get into color, light, and happy smiles. Let’s catch granny cuddling the kids and grandad with a blob of birthday cake on his chin! Let’s leave a legacy for our great-grandchildren to enjoy. But let it be the best kind of photo that we can manage.

Trails of Happy Tails

Trails of Happy Tails is a 501c3 non-profit animal rescue organization strictly ran by volunteers. We mainly rescue dogs and cats from the Merced County Animal Shelter. We work with many different rescue groups throughout the state, placing thousands of abandoned, neglected, and unwanted animals. We've reduced the euthanasia rate from 70% to 35%.

A 15-pound cocker spaniel-poodle mix named Pawlee scared off a mother bear and her two cubs Sunday morning after they strayed into his owners' back yard.

"We had just let him out for the morning and he ran into the yard and started barking his head off," owner Fran Osiason said.

Osiason said her 9-year-old son, Jacob, went outside to see what the commotion was about and came running back in to report there were bears in the yard.

His barking drove the two cubs up a tree, and they eventually climbed down and hopped over a fence with their mother and retreated into the woods.

Northern New Jersey seems to breed feisty pets: In 2006, a tabby cat named Jack chased a bear up a tree in his West Milford yard.

WYCKOFF, N.J. (Aug. 25) - If only Goldilocks had a cockapoo.

A 15-pound cocker spaniel-poodle mix named Pawlee scared off a mother bear and her two cubs Sunday morning after they strayed into his owners' backyard.

He may not look fierce, but Pawlee, an 8-month-old cocker spaniel-poodle mix, scared off a mother bear and her two cubs who wandered into his owners' backyard Sunday in Wyckoff, N.J. The bears decided to vamoose when they heard Pawlee's furious barking. Click through for more animals in the news.

She was worried that the mother would come after Pawlee to protect her cubs, but the pugnacious pup, just 8 months old, had other plans.

Memorial wall for pets a Canadian first

Canada's first memorial wall to commemorate beloved pets

was unveiled in an emotional ceremony at the Calgary Humane Society Saturday afternoon.

Hundreds of people, some travelling from as far as Penticton, B.C., gathered on the grass behind the shelter to remember the animals that have become so much more than pets -- many consider them members of the family.

"The majority of the people here have lost a pet and understand the tremendous amount of grief that comes with that loss," said Terri Perrin, an animal lover and former president of the Calgary Pet Loss Support Group.

Perrin formed the non-profit group in 1990, in an attempt to provide counselling and resources for people who had lost their furry friends.

"In the past people didn't really understand the effect of losing a pet could have on a person," she said.

"Grief is a broken heart at the death of a relationship, but anything we can do to help memorialize our animals is a big help," she said.

There are a whopping one million stray dogs in Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. And they bite, sometimes! While for some they are lovable pets, others sense the lurking menace. Parents fearing brutal attacks on children have been demanding immediate removal of stray canines from streets and public places — unacceptable to animal rights activists. Municipalities remove some dogs, vaccinate some, and leave some. But after every gruesome attack, a parent group–animal rights activist drama explodes.

But, what about “animal rights”? “Animal right” is a contradiction in terms. All rights derive from human beings’ right to own oneself, from which follows an individual’s right to own things non-human. Slavery is unjust, but rearing cattle is business. And dogs are no exception to this.

Thinking of buying a pet for junior? Consider this: children who grow up in the company of cats, dogs or other furry friends are more likely to become snoring adults, according to a new study.

Snoring is no laughing matter. Besides sleep deprivation - for the snorer, and especially for anyone within earshot - snoring is linked to more serious consequences.

It increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, such as heart attacks or a stroke, and can even result in premature death.

Earlier research has shown that a tendency to snore can be established early in life.

To find out why, researchers led by Karl Franklin of University Hospital in Umea, Sweden asked more than 15,500 randomly selected people in Nordic countries about their early childhood, and their snoring habits.

Just over 18 per cent of the respondents fit the profile of habitual snorers, defined as "loud and disturbing snoring at least three nights in a week."
