They were produced by a jeweler called Peter Carl Fabergé and are made of expensive metals or gemstones decorated with combinations of enamel and gems. The term ‘Fabergé Egg’ has become a synonym of luxury and the eggs are regarded as masterpieces of the jeweler’s fine art. Peter Carl Fabergé original name Carl Gustavovich Fabergé (May 30, 1846–September 24, 1920) was a Russian jeweller, best known for the famous Fabergé eggs, made in the style of genuine Easter eggs, but using precious metals and gemstones rather than more mundane materials.

Faberge egg sold for record £8.9m

A Faberge egg made for the Rothschild banking family has sold at auction for a world record £8.9m.

The Rothschild egg made in 1902 is just one of 12 in public hands known to have been produced to standards required by the Russian Imperial family.

The gold and pink egg has a clock for a face and a diamond-encrusted cockerel which nods its head and flaps its wings on the stroke of each hour.

The egg was originally given as an engagement gift in 1905

A private Russian art collector bought the clock at Christie's in London.

He was in the auction room but not immediately identified.

The egg which has never been seen in public before was previously only documented in private family records.

Made by Peter Carl Faberge, it was a gift to Germaine Halphen for her engagement to Baron de Rothschild in 1905.

It is thought the egg was purchased in St Petersburg at the turn of the 20th Century.

The previous record was set when The Faberge Winter Egg sold in 2002 for more than £6.6m.

Rare Faberge egg to be sold in London

The egg was made for the Rothschild family in 1902 by Peter Carl Faberge and contains a diamond-encrusted cockerel which pops out every hour to flap its wings and nod its head while opening and shutting its beak and crowing.

"The discovery of this masterpiece is the most exciting of my 40-year career," said Anthony Philips, Christie's international director of silver and Russian works of art.

"We expect this remarkable object to be of profound interest to private collectors and institutions from around the world."

Faberge, a Russian jeweller whose name is synonymous with extravagant craftsmanship, made 50 eggs for the Russian royal family but is only known to have created 12 eggs to similar standards for private clients.

The Rothschild egg will be auctioned on November 28 as part of a week of Russian art sales at Christie's which is expected to attract a string of big bucks bids from wealthy Russian business people in London.
