"The patient came in with severe abdominal pains. After examinations we discovered that he had hundreds of nails in his stomach," Carlos Delgado, a surgeon at the hospital in the town of Cajamarca, told AFP.

Requelme Abanto Alvarado was admitted to the hospital on Friday. After a two-hour operation doctors removed 900 grams (two pounds) of nails, coins and scrap metal from his stomach, as well as a small knife.

"I have never had a case like this," the surgeon said. "I have operated on plenty of patients, but so many things in a stomach, it's really extraordinary."

Alvarado was in a stable condition following the operation, Delgado said, adding that he was now being examined by mental health specialists.

I wonder if he was practicing to get into a circus or some kind of "freak show". I have read about people who allegedly could eat metal - don't ask me where or even when I read that, it is all mixed it with the other zillions of bits of trivial information that gets collected in my brain.

Bears in a zoo in eastern Germany have lost their fur, but international experts cannot work out why.

Three spectacled bears in Leipzig Zoo are in various states of baldness, with the worst being hairless all over.

Zoo curator Gerd Noetzhold said he had discovered that zoos throughout Europe and further afield had encountered the same problem, but no-one knew why.

One expert suggested it could be caused by climate and the diet of the bears, whose native habitat is South America.

The bears come from the Andean mountains of Ecuador, Peru and northern Bolivia.

The bears - named Dolores, Bianca and Lolita - are suffering from itchiness as well, so animal keepers apply ointments to soothe their skin.

"This problem with the spectacled bears is not just in Leipzig," Mr Noetzhold told the BBC World Service.

"There are other zoos in Europe and overseas having the same problem.

No es un tema nuevo (ya lo vimos al detalle hace un par de años), pero esta nueva infografía realizada por el Internet World Stats Broadband Penetration, resulta interesante para ver cómo van las cosas con la velocidad de internet en relación al precio.

Lamentablemente, el estudio parece haber ignorado a gran parte del mundo. Estoy seguro de que si hubiesen considerado latinoamérica, estaría pintado todo de rojo.

El país con mayor velocidad promedio? Japón, con 61 mbps de conexión promedio, y pagan $0.27 por 1mbps. Es decir, $16 aproximadamente por tremenda conexión. Seguidos de Korea, con una conexión de 46mbps.

Aquí en Perú? por una conexión de 4 mbps, tengo que pagar alrededor de $80 – $100… Es decir, mi conexión es 15 veces más lenta que la promedio, y por esa conexión, tengo que pagar 6 veces más. Como para deprimirse…

Y sus conexiones? Qué tan rápidas / cuanto pagan por ellas?

Eager to attract more tourists, the town of Tiwanaku in the Bolivian Andes has spruced-up the ancient Akapana pyramid with adobe instead of stone, in what some experts are calling a renovation fiasco.

Now, the Akapana pyramid risks losing its designation as a U.N. World Heritage Site, and there is concern the makeover could even cause its collapse.

The pyramid is one of the biggest pre-Columbian constructions in South America and a building of great spiritual significance for the Tiwanaku civilization, which spread throughout southwestern Bolivia and parts of neighboring Peru, Argentina and Chile from around 1500 BC to AD 1200.

According to Paz, who now heads excavation at the site, the town of Tiwanaku hired the UNAR to renovate Akapana to make it "more attractive for tourists," regardless of how the pyramid may have originally looked like.

The archeologist said lower decks are slightly tilted because of the extra weight of the adobe walls, which could lead to the collapse of the pyramid.

I imagine her practising three-point turns, parallel parking and reversing around a corner on the endless white terrain of Bolivia's Uyuni Salt Lake.

She's right. Apart from the occasional 4x4 zipping past, any wannabe speed demon would have a field day here – all 12,000 sq km of the world's largest salt lake as their private race track.

Unlike its South American neighbours, landlocked Bolivia can consider itself off the beaten track mainly because it is still so hard to get to. There are no direct flights from Europe to capital La Paz, so most people cross the border from Peru, Argentina, Brazil or Chile, which also gives them the chance to acclimatise to the city's heady 3,636-metre altitude.
