Wright State University prof awarded for Second Life MBA program

WRIGHT STATE - Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio has nominated Shu Schiller for the Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Technology award. This national award is presented by the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning and goes annually to faculty members demonstrating innovative approaches to student learning.

Schiller’s class is anything but ordinary. At each step of the way, students analyze experiences from a business and marketing perspective. At one point they might be looking at a case study. (For example, STA Travel had two islands and hoped to promote their real life travel business within SL. They targeted newbies by offering them tours around SL. Within a year, they had withdrawn from SL. Why did they leave? What can we learn from their experience?)

You need to think about the business and how to use your first life resources to promote your SL business,” Schiller said.

Palin, McCain's vice presidential running mate, has had frequent run-ins with environmentalists.

She has defended Alaska's right to shoot down wolves from the air to boost caribou and moose herds for hunters, and - contrary to a view held by McCain - is not convinced that global warming is the result of human activity.

Environmentalists have nicknamed Palin the "killa from Wasilla," a reference to the small town where she formerly was mayor.

"Her philosophy from our perspective is cut, kill, dig and drill," said John Toppenberg, director of the Alaska Wildlife Alliance, maintaining she is "in the Stone Age of wildlife management and is very opposed to utilizing accepted science."

State officials characterized the killings as humanitarian, saying the pups would have suffered and eventually died without the care of their parents. Environmentalists argued they were killed to boost caribou populations to the benefit of hunters.

Esref Armaga is an exceptionally talented artist from Turkey. What sets him apart is he was born without eyes.

Esref, from an early age, had a better grasp of perspective and proportion than many sighted artists, which based on everything science knows about sight, should have been absolutely impossible.

As a visual artist, I found it very difficult to accept and understand that a man without eyes could paint accurate and beautiful landscapes, even seascapes, without ever having "seen" them.

The video's slightly long but absolutely worth watching.

Being as I'm a woman, live in the West and am close to Palin's age, I think I should have some perspective on this speech.

I only actually heard the first bit, since it was on pretty late for me (thanks Rudi) and I still had to clean up after dinner.

What I heard was, "I'm a mom. I want to be your friend. Your friend in the White House."

I laughed and gave up. I already graduated from junior high school, thank you. I already have friends. And that line sounded like it was lifted from a Shane Co. ad.

Aborigines angry at book which says girls can play didgeridoos

ANGRY Aborigines say women face infertility - or worse - if they follow advice in a new book and touch a didgeridoo because it is ''men's business''.

An indigenous academic claims an extreme cultural indiscretion has been committed by the Australian version of an American activities book - The Daring Book for Girls - as it includes a section on how to play the didgeridoo.

The Victorian Aboriginal Education Association has even demanded the book be withdrawn.

The association's general manager Mark Rose said: "I would say from an indigenous perspective, an extreme mistake but part of a general ignorance that mainstream Australia has about Aboriginal culture.

"We know very clearly that there's a range of consequences for a female touching a didgeridoo.

"Infertility would be the start of it, ranging to other consequences. I won't even let my daughter touch one."

Dr Rose says there is men's business and there is women's business.

A key issue in the US presidential campaign has been the United States' reliance on dwindling foreign oil supplies and the wisdom, or otherwise, of more drilling at home.

The Rocky Mountains in the US are said to contain about a tenth of the country's untapped oil and a third of its natural gas reserves.

It is an area of rare, natural beauty that is now under threat.

From ground level, the stunning mountains and lush meadows of Aspen, Colorado, appear nearly unspoiled and untouched, but that’s not the whole story.

'Stark contrast'

Bruce Gordon, a long-time pilot and conservationist, runs Eco Flight, a small environmental organisation providing an aerial perspective on the frenzy of oil and gas drilling in the western region of the Rocky mountains.

"My mission ... is to educate people so they can make informed decisions and too often I see decisions being made by special interest groups," Gordon said.
