He'll be willing to pay well for a penguin sighting and will even cash in your Penguin Points for experience in any skill.

Royal Penguins Becomes Knights

With a medal for good conduct and long service, Nils Olaf III (Nils Olav III), a resident of Edinburgh Zoo, probably is the most honored penguin. And it’s not over yet, because Nils was knighted on Friday.

He became a member of the King’s Guard in 1972, when he was selected as a mascot. The penguin was named after after Egelien and Norway’s then-King Olav V. Presently, Nils Olaf is the third penguin that replaced the original mascot, getting Nil’s name and rank. On Friday, the penguin was knighted by the British Maj. Gen. Euan Loudon on behalf of Norway’s King Harald V. Here are some shots from the ceremony!

Norwegians give penguin knighthood

A penguin at Edinburgh Zoo was today knighted by the Norwegian Army.

Nils Olav (that's the penguin) is already a Colonel-in-Chief in the Norwegian King's Guard, as well as being their mascot. Over the years, the famous king penguin has been promoted up through the ranks to attain his lofty status.

At a ceremony today, with the permission of King Harald V of Norway, he was granted a knighthood.

Nils Olav first became an honorary member after a young lieutenant called Nils Egelien first visited the penguins at the Zoo in the 1970s, liked what he saw, and made one of them a Lance Corporal.

The animal has received medals for long service and had a 4ft bronze statue built in his honour. Of course, when we say that he's had a long service, it should be pointed out that the penguin honoured today isn't actually the original Nils Olav.

Nils Olav Mark I died in the 1980s, and was replaced by a two-year-old penguin at the Zoo, who became the new Nils Olav.

LONDON - Nils Olav already has medals for good conduct and long service. He made honorary colonel-in-chief of the elite Norwegian King's Guard in 2005. And on Friday he was knighted. Not bad for a 3-foot tall penguin — actually, three of them.

The king penguin was named after Egelien and Norway's then-King Olav V. When the penguin died — Finlay said no one at the zoo knew exactly when — he was replaced by a second penguin, who inherited Nils Olav's name and rank.

The current Nils Olav, the third penguin to serve as the guards' mascot, was promoted from honorable regimental sergeant major to honorary colonel-in-chief in 2005, Finlay said.

Heard the one about the penguin granted a Norwegian knighthood? You have now.

Because Nils Olav - yes, he has a name too, a king penguin at Edinburgh Zoo, is being made a Sir.

The story goes back to 1913 when a famous Norwegian family presented the zoo with its first king penguin.

In 1972, a young lieutenant of the Norwegian Royal Guard visited the zoo and adopted a king penguin as a mascot, bestowing on him the rank of Lance Corporal.

He was named Nils Olav after a soldier, Nils Egelien, and Norway's then King Olav.

A welcome ceremony is being performed by HM The King's Guard Band, followed by speeches from the great and good of Norway's military.

"Nils always recognises the Norwegian Guardsmen when they come to visit him," said Darren McGarry, the zoo's animal collection manager.

"They came in recently and he immediately walked towards the gate. He loves the attention he receives at the ceremony and even takes time to inspect the troops."

Perhaps already the world’s highest ranking penguin, Nils Olav of Edinburgh Zoo was given a knighthood earlier today.

Previously a Colonel-in-Chief of the Norwegian Army and awarded the Norwegian Army's Long Service and Good Conduct medal in 2005, King Harald V personally approved the new honour for the highly-decorated aquatic bird.

Although buckets of fish may dominate his thoughts, this prestigious penguin doesn't take his ceremonial duties lightly and receives regular visits from his troops whenever they are in Edinburgh to perform at the city's Military Tattoo.

Arriving under escort with King’s Guard Colour Detachment this morning for his promotion, Sir Nils was honoured with a fanfare from the H.M. King’s Guard’s Trumpet Corps while bagpipers from the Tattoo closed the ceremony.

"They came in recently and he immediately walked towards the gate, we had to tell him that the ceremony was happening at a later date!”

SCIENTISTS are uncovering the deepest secrets of the freezing Antarctic waters by enlisting elephant seals to carry probes to places never before reached by humans.

The seals’ diving ability is being used to collect data from far beneath the ice shelves of the Antarctic coastlines as well as from the open sea.

The creatures can reach depths of 6,500ft, so revealing information about the ocean’s greatest mysteries. Scientists from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) and St Andrews University attached miniaturised sensors to about 80 seals, then proceeded to track them.

“The sensors are so good that they can record water temperature, salinity and pressure – even tell us what the animal was doing,” said Iain Staniland, a seal and penguin expert at BAS.

The seals were tagged at the islands of South Georgia, Kerguelen and Macquarie in the Southern Ocean, and at the western coast of the Antarctic Peninsula
