In a report released today, "RIAA v. The People: Five Years Later," the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) presents a comprehensive overview of the RIAA's litigation campaign and concludes that it is hurting music fans and artists alike, without making a dent in unauthorized file-sharing.
"If the RIAA wants to keep suing hundreds of people each month and collecting these huge settlements, it can't take shortcuts," said EFF Staff Attorney Corynne McSherry. "It's not enough to say the law 'could have been' broken and demand thousands of dollars to make the accusation go away. The recording industry must prove its case and show that infringement actually occurred."

Clip Source: www.eff.org

San Francisco - Five years after the Recording Industry of America (RIAA) began its massive litigation campaign against music fans suspected of sharing copyrighted music files over the Internet, the campaign has failed to get artists paid or reduce peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing. Meanwhile, the legal foundation of the campaign is being questioned by several federal courts.

judges have repeatedly rejected the RIAA's "making available" theory, the notion that merely having a music file in a "shared" folder on a computer constitutes copyright infringement, even if no one ever copies the file.

Downloading from P2P networks continues unabated, while some people simply choose to share files in ways that are harder to monitor, like burning and exchanging CDs among friends.

For the full report "RIAA v. Federal agents arrested a Royce City church pastor Wednesday for sharing child porn pictures with other people online. 36-year-old Steve Richardson, leader of the First United Methodist Church of Royce City is charged with transporting child pornography after agents seized computers at home and at his church.

The arrest stemmed from an investigation that began in December 2007 by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents (ICE). While serving a warrant on another suspected child pornographer, they discovered pictures posted in a peer-to-peer service by someone named "cowboysspades."

But we're also spending longer periods at work than ever before. Smart companies realize that allowing workers to take personal time during the day means they spend more time in the office overall, get more work done, and are happier, more productive employees.

Clip Source: msn.nzherald.co.nz

Most people spend more than 25 per cent of their time online at work on personal activities.

And 80 per cent of emails sent by volume in the workplace are personal.

Paul Hortop, who reviews company network security for consultancy Voco, said the most common websites visited by personal web surfers were online trading sites, instant messaging/chat services and peer-to-peer sharing sites (allowing movie, music and software sharing).

Mr Hortop, who compiled the information from his own investigations and from a survey by online advertising provider Burst Media, said management were often unaware what was happening on networks under their control.

Tags: web, workplace

<clipSource>http://msn.nzherald.co.nz/section/1/story.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10534055</clipSource>

Fun uTorrent Easter Eggs

clipped by: danrox77
clipper's remarks: You gotta love the Tetris one!

Clip Source: www.johntp.com

uTorrent Easter Eggs

I just found a few easter eggs for uTorrent. But the University of Washington in Seattle has hit on a promising alternative.

Bottlenecks occur most when people download P2P content that is stored a long way from their homes; internet links over thousands of kilometres get tied up delivering it. But the new scheme, called Proactive Provider Participation for P2P (or P4P), could ease the load. It involves ISPs supplying P2P sites with data on the shortest routes between peers, as well as network traffic reports that identify uncongested routes.

In tests, P4P cut the average trip of a P2P data packet from 1600 kilometres to just 250 km, reducing overall load by about 80 per cent, a Seattle conference on the internet heard last week.

<clipSource>http://technology.newscientist.com/article/mg19926726.000-guiding-internet-traffic-beats-throttling-it.html?DCMP=ILC-hmts&nsref=news6_head_mg19926726.000</clipSource>

Encouraging participation

clipped by: HairlessBeachApe
clipper's remarks: Nice line here dealing with peer acceptance.

Clip Source: www.brandon-hall.com

Encouraging participation and contribution in emergent social software platforms

I think it’s very useful and I’m with the healthcare exec that said sometimes people don’t care much what the boss thinks of them but they do care about what their peers think.
