The motivation of those outside of Christ is always less than the highest good, and thus the reason for Law and the order it brings is merely personal peace in this life to those without a spiritual life. Egoistically speaking, Augustine sees that the non-Christian has as an intent only selfishness, and so though they may receive the Laws of God for practical purposes and their morality might have points of identity with Christian ethics on how a Civil state should be governed, being outside of the grace of God and having their own pleasure and well being as their ultimate goal, in every good law they ordain, they still break the Law. The Law is love, and love of the self the source of every ill of man. As Calvin said it, self denial is the essence of every Christian virtue.

Berlin, a city torn apart by war, is the perfect setting for an American president preaching peace. Ronald Reagan famously stood metres away from the Brandenburg Gate and called on the Soviet Union to tear down the Wall dividing Europe. And President Kennedy used a Cold War visit to the once and future German capital to declare: “ich bin ein Berliner!”

The plan, Obama advisers have told Der Spiegel magazine, is to use the visit on July 24 to signal an imminent improvement in the transatlantic relationship.

But, say advisers to Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, it would be tantamount to giving the German stamp of approval to Mr Obama, an undue interference in the election campaign.

Technically the decision lies with the Berlin Mayor, a flamboyant, openly gay Social Democrat, who quite relishes the idea of irritating the conservative Chancellor. The toing and froing between the various seats of power in Berlin is thus likely to continue until the last minute.

On Wednesday July 9, military veterans, religious leaders and peace activists will convene on Canadian Consulates to protest the planned deportation of AWOL GIs back to the U.S., where they would face court martial, imprisonment and dishonorable discharges. Vigils and delegations in 14 U.S. cities will press the Conservative government to allow U.S. war resisters to remain in Canada.

In a landmark vote on June 3rd, 2008, the House of Commons called on the Canadian government to “immediately implement a program to allow conscientious objectors… who have refused or left military service related to a war not sanctioned by the United Nations… to apply for permanent resident status and remain in Canada.” The motion, which passed 137-110, also called for an immediate halt to planned deportations.

Of course there are no known social good coming from the conquest of death, we never lived in a social system that conquered death. How could we possibly know? But Kass and his friends, seem to have some privileged knowledge we do not possess, and they already decided for us as individuals and as a society. Well, in time, I believe, they will have the choice to walk their talk. All I want is a chance to walk mine.

July 4: Meditation for World Peace (thousands of people encircling the main meadow with hands held chanting "OM", followed by a parade led by Kiddie Village and then culminating in a big boisterous celebration that lasts all day and night:

This is the very colorful "Grandpa Woodstock" who is a regular attendee of the Annual Gathering. He told me that I was "very beautiful and could be Queen of the Blueberry Blossoms"!

The area was very beautiful. We walked along the Dutch Joe River....

As I noted here, Obama has been going to some lengths to make sure nobody thinks he's a Muslim. Nor has he been making any particular effort to add, "Not that there's anything wrong with that." This is an example of Obama's canny political calculation and tacit awareness that people are suspicious of the violent and supremacist elements of Islam, but the Perpetually Angry are angry again, and soon he may have to issue an unequivocal Islam Is A Religion Of Peace declaration.

Vanessa Alikhan was at a Democratic ''unity party'' when she overheard another guest indignantly refute the rumor that Barack Obama is Muslim, as if it was a racial slur. She later recounted the conversation to a friend.

A racial slur? A slur, sure -- his website denying it is called Fight The Smears. But a racial slur? What race is Islam again?
