Do you ever wish you could backtrack through the Windows clipboard to retrieve a recently copied item? Or wish you had the ability to quickly paste items that you use over and over again? ClipTrak Pro, an update to our great clipboard manager, enables you to do just that.

This version adds many features that enable you to:

• Organize your clips into folders

• Paste clips without using the mouse with our new Quick Paste Key operation

• View clips by type, copy date, paste date, and most used

• View the clip contents of images, HTML, text, rich text format (RTF), and Web pages

• Edit the text, HTML, and RTF of your clips

• Spell check clips

• Perform full text searches on all clips

USB 3.0 will have dedicated lines going in and out, however, so that communications between host and device can happen at the same time. The other major improvement is in the data-transfer rate, which will be close to 5 gigabits per second (Gbps) in each direction (officially targeting 4.7 Gbps), compared with the 480 megabits per second (Mbps), one-way, that USB 2.0 offers.

Search engines have gotten so good that I sometimes forget that they offer fantastically useful syntax for more specific results. I'll point these out from time to time, but here are my top three most useful Google search modifiers that use a colon:

site:URL and search term. As in, site:www.pcmag.com "wireless router." Insiders point out that this modifier is even stronger if you drop the www. You can also drop the domain name entirely and search, for example, only .gov sites.

define:word. This brings up definitions, related phrases, and offers to translate the word.

living ecosystem of worms, sowbugs and bacteria are invited
to this table. They are a part of the digestive system that
starts with a person discarding food leftovers and shredded
paper into the portal at the top. The bacteria and sowbugs
begin breaking down the waste and the worms soon join in to
further digest it into a rich compost that sprinkles out of
the bottom of the fabric bag that hangs beneath the table.
This compost is used as a fertilizer for plants, such as those
at the base of the table.

Tags: tables, compost, worms, waste disposal

<clipSource>http://accad.osu.edu/~ayoungs/digestive.html</clipSource>

Clipmarks featured as Site of the Week by PCMag.com

clipped by: egoldstein
clipper's remarks: Check out Davis Janowski's review of Clipmarks 2.0

Clip Source: www.pcmag.com

Not all laptop manufacturers are equal. Some have good reliability, but when something breaks, the support is atrocious. Some have mediocre reliability, but are great at fixing things when they break. And of course, there are those manufacturers who are good all-around, and those who are atrocious.

I’ve divided the major manufacturers into three tiers for reliability, and then three tiers for support. My ratings are based on a composite of the reliability ratings from PC Magazine, PC World, and Consumer Reports, and the support ratings from PC Magazine and PC World. Those ratings are based on actual reader surveys; I don’t have the means to perform such surveys, but I can analyze them and see what brands consistently perform well and what brands perform badly.

Based on these ratings, I highly recommend Apple, Lenovo and Fujitsu; recommend Dell, Acer, and Toshiba; and do not recommend HP/Compaq, Sony, and Gateway.

The links to the surveys (which offer more detailed results) are as follows:

Tempests have been ricocheting around the blogospheric teapot for several days now; all leading up to today's "developer preview release" of Firefox 2.0 Beta. An RC1 (release candidate 1, basically a test version for hunting down bugs) was available over the weekend.

Be forewarned: this version really is meant for the developer community. In fact, in the words of those at the Mozilla Foundation, "current users of Mozilla Firefox 1.x should not use Firefox 2 Beta 1," in other words, all those extensions you have downloaded and been using for Firefox 1.5 won't work as yet. And no word at press time was available from Mozilla HQ as to when any said extensions might arrive, so best to stay away unless you are indeed a developer (though there is a portable version available that won't interfere with previous versions. See Jim Louderback's news story from last weekend for details).

Here's a sampling of what has been updated and rolled out in the new version: built-in phishing protection; streamlined RSS-feed handling and controls; inline spell-checking (so far in my testing, I've found this feature to be non-intuitive, to say the least); and a session-restore feature for when Firefox hangs and shuts down. Session restore allows you to automatically open all the pages you had open when things went wrong. I liked this one!

As for those things the typical user might not notice, there is built-in support for Javascript 1.7, a new Windows installer, additional search plug-in support, updates to the extension system, and support for storing structured data on the client.

Stay tuned to PCMag.com for an in-depth preview of Firefox 2.0 in coming days.

Tags: technology, browser, firefox, pc, computer, pc magazine, javascript, plug ins, rss

<clipSource>http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1988107,00.asp</clipSource>

Cool Photo Projects

clipped by: bookchick49

Clip Source: www.pcmag.com

About Free Software

Audacity is free software, developed by a group of volunteers and distributed under the GNU General Public License (GPL).

Free software is not just free of cost (like “free beer”). It is free as in freedom (like “free speech”). Free software gives you the freedom to use a program, study how it works, improve it, and share it with others.
We want to like products. We really do. We get excited when a new technology or a supposed hip, new device crosses our paths. But after the initial oohs and aahs (yes, we do that, too), we get down to business and put the new app, service, gadget, computer, etc. through its paces. Our talented and impartial team of analysts, writers and editors then bring you our findings. Products are rated on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the best. It's rare that we see either extreme, but when we do, you can bet we'll tell you why. And from what we've seen online at PCMag.com, you're just as interested in the stinkers as you are the winners. With that in mind, we've compiled a list of the worst products we saw in the first quarter of this year.

Altiris Software Virtualization Solution (SVS) is a completely new way to use software. By placing applications and data into managed units called Virtual Software Packages (VSP's), SVS allows you to instantly activate, deactivate, or reset applications and to completely avoid conflicts between applications, without altering the base Windows installation. Say goodbye to "DLL Hell" and "Registry Rot" forever!

Getting apps and data into VSP's is simple with an included tool.

This version is the same as the regular commercial product shipped by Altiris, minus the server-side components for centralized management.

Note: When using SVS, it is important that you understand how data files are handled. Otherwise you may inadvertently lose data. Please take a minute to read some documentation on this.
