* it costs taxpayers at minimum $10 billion a year to catch, prosecute, and incarcerate marijuana users and sellers;
* it enables government to snatch the cars, money, computers and other properties of people caught up in drug raids even if they have had no charges filed against them; and
* it allows “police agents at all levels to trample our Bill of Rights in their eagerness to nab pot consumers.”

The drug war has also unleashed a torrent of racism in the form of unjust sentencing, which confines crack-cocaine users who are mostly black to prison for longer terms than powder snorters, who are mostly white.

Seven million Americans have been arrested since 1995 on marijuana charges and 41,000 of them are rotting in federal and State prisons — but the public is starting to rebel against “the preposterous war on pot,” two political scientists say. Thousands of other pot users and sellers are confined in local jails as well.

“People convicted of possessing even one ounce of marijuana can face a mandatory minimum sentence of a year in jail, and having even one plant in your yard is a federal felony,” progressive organizer Jim Hightower and co-author Phillip Frazer point out in the November issue of “The Hightower Lowdown.”

Police arrest someone in America every 36 seconds on marijuana charges, with a record 872,000 arrests made in 2007, “more than for all violent crimes combined,” Hightower and Frazer point out. They note that 89 per cent of all marijuana arrests “are for simple possession of the weed, not for producing or selling it.”

When it's a choice between strengthening the Patriot Act, or showing up for the Tea Party Patriots, what's a GOP lawmaker to do? We'll give you one guess...

Several Republican members of Congress yesterday blew off votes on the signature anti-terror legislation of the post 9/11 era to attend Michele Bachmann's Tea Party rally against health-care reform.

But had a few more of their own showed up to vote, instead of playing to the Tea Party crowd, perhaps they would have been able to fix some of what they didn't like about it.

The day HCR finally comes up for a vote we'll just tell these idiots some teabaggers and Fox News cameras are outside making a ruckus.

clipper's remarks: Just to underscore how extremist the House GOP caucus is, this hysteria is all based on a new book entitled "Muslim Mafia: Inside the Secret Underworld That's Conspiring to Islamize America." That's the source which these House members are using. In fact, one of the GOP House members, Rep. Sue Myrick of North Carolina, wrote the foreword to the book. One of the two authors of that book, Dave Gaubatz, maintains this website, where he's hawking the book through Paypal.

In 2006, Gaubatz created a project called "Mapping Sharia in America", the purpose of which was to create a comprehensive map of every mosque and Islamic school in the U.S. This is what he wrote:

It is our task to conduct an extensive mapping of all the Islamic day schools, mosques, and other identifiable organizations in the US and to determine which ones teach or preach Islamic law, Sharib.

This might actually be the most despicable domestic political event of the year:

A group of House Republicans is calling for an investigation into whether a leading American Muslim advocacy group tried to "spy" on congressional offices by placing interns on key security committees.

Rep. Sue Myrick, North Carolina Republican, cited an internal January 2007 memo in which the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) discussed placing Muslim interns on Capitol Hill to "focus on influencing congressmen responsible for policy that directly impacts the American Muslim community."

While the Republicans said they did not know of specific legislation that CAIR had affected, Franks, a Judiciary Committee member, said he wouldn’t be surprised if it was trying to amend the Patriot Act.

Obama has won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize, having been nominated for it just two weeks into his Presidency.

Uch. Can you get any more disgusting? A peace prize being used to justify an expanded war into Afghanistan. By the way, according to National Security Advisor Jim Jones, Afghanistan has less than 100 Al Qaeda in it. (What?)

Well, this award is largely for what Obama might do. Let's take a look at what he has done:

* Been hypocritical on torture: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7

* Expanded the war in Afghanistan.

* Says he will leave up to 50,000 troops in Iraq even after "ending military operations."

* Extended Blackwater's (aka Xe's) military contracts, Blackwater which has gone virtually unaccountable for its crimes.

* Expanded the use of military contractors.

* Continues to spy on peace groups through "fusion centers."

* Supports the growing trend of police militarization.

* Pushed to continue provisions from the Patriot Act, including the "Lone Wolf" provision.

Three high-profile provisions of the USA Patriot Act are about to expire. That should be a chance for Congress to give serious consideration to curtailing some of the excessive powers it granted to the executive branch during the Bush years — without enough consideration in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 and later.

Instead, Congress is headed toward renewing the provisions — including expanded authority to search financial records, conduct roving wiretaps and track “lone wolf” terrorist suspects — without adequate oversight or safeguards or touching other problematic areas of the new surveillance and intelligence framework.

Using the threat of violence to intimidate others for political ends is a form of terrorism.

There is no universally agreed-upon definition of the word "terrorism." As I've often said, the reason it's next to impossible to define the term is that everyone wants it to mean: 'violent acts in the pursuit of political goals with which I disagree.'

That aside, most agree that attempting to influence public officials through a threat of violence is an act of terrorism.
