Passport renewal

When you are traveling or residing abroad, your passport can be renewed at the nearest ROC mission overseas. The following documents and fee are needed to renew your passport abroad:

A completed passport application form
Your most recent passport
Two identical passport photos (45x35 mm or 1.77x1.38 inches, color)
A fee of US $36 or the equivalent in the local currency

Police delete London tourists' photos 'to prevent terrorism'

Like most visitors to London, Klaus Matzka and his teenage son Loris took several photographs of some of the city's sights, including the famous red double-decker buses. More unusually perhaps, they also took pictures of the Vauxhall bus station, which Matzka regards as "modern sculpture".

But the tourists have said they had to return home to Vienna without their holiday pictures after two policemen forced them to delete the photographs from their cameras in the name of preventing terrorism.

Matkza, a 69-year-old retired television cameraman with a taste for modern architecture, was told that photographing anything to do with transport was "strictly forbidden". The policemen also recorded the pair's details, including passport numbers and hotel addresses.

In a telephone interview from his home in Vienna, Matka said: "I've never had these experiences anywhere, never in the world, not even in Communist countries."

Israel Moves Toward a National Biometric Database

"Israeli's government has approved the creation of a biometric database which would contain fingerprints and facial photos of all Israeli citizens. If the bill becomes law — and it is at an early stage — the biometric information of each citizen would be embedded in their passport and national ID card. Israeli citizens would be required by law to submit to biometric testing upon request by government employees, soldiers, and policemen, so that their biometric info can be compared to the info embedded in their ID card / passport. The declared purpose of the bill is to combat forgery of passports and ID cards, and also to aid identification 'in cases of a mass disaster.' The bill was approved over objections from civil rights groups and the Israeli Bar. The article notes that no other democratic country has a comprehensive biometric database of all citizens."

Bald head 'too shiny'

A journalist had his new passport photos rejected - because his bald head was too shiny.

Ian Down, 42, got the pictures taken at a photo-booth and handed them over with his documents at a passport office, reports the Daily Mirror.

But a clerk at the Passport Service looked at the flash reflecting off Ian's head and asked: "What's that mark?"

Ian said: "I was shocked. I told them what it was but they said some countries might not let me in if they saw it."

Ian, head of pictures at the Mirror, was sent away to get some new photos by the clerk in Victoria, Central London. The new ones also had a bit of glare from the flash but not enough to cause a problem.

Ian said: "I was using the Premier same day service so it really only took five minutes to get another picture taken. But it could cause delays if sending off for a new passport by post. And it was a little embarrassing."

Strict new rules have been introduced for the electronic reading of passports.

Experiments in Coin Photography - 2008

It has been several years since I have updated my material on the photography of ancient coins so this page will offer opinions developed since my earlier pages which are linked at the bottom of this page. Opinions may differ on whether my coin photos have improved in these last few years but at least a few images have benefited from what I have learned. There is room for several opinions on the questions that face a photographer of ancient coins and we all must decide which style best renders the coin as we would like it to be seen. It should be obvious that some coins, like some people, take better pictures than others. We have to decide if we are trying to make each subject "Hollywood Handsome" or going for "Passport Photos" which show the coin with brutal honesty

Justice is a scam, but they are getting closer to knowing where everyone is all of the time. Chipped or not. They found when composites of different people were shown to a computer it was able recognise all of them

Such a method could improve face recognition programs already in use to identify suspects at airports, for example, or as part of immigration and employment verification

humans are great at recognising photographed images of people they know, they are less successful at picking out photos of people they do not know

humans and computers struggle with the same issues.

In short, 10 images of one stranger can look like 10 photos of 10 different people.

Time For The True Story About 9/11

The radical Bush Doctrine in foreign policy is founded on the official story of 9/11. The administration used our fear of terrorism to sway public opinion and justify its actions. We are slowly awakening to how the Bush administration manipulated our support for its preemptive invasion of Iraq, but most are still asleep.

According to a survey done by Stars and Stripes, 85% of our troops believe they are in Iraq because of Saddam Hussein's involvement in the attacks of 9/11/01. Much of the public believes the report of the 9/11 Commission provided a correct account of the events of that day. These beliefs are based on a misunderstanding of the facts.

The reason Building 7 is not mentioned by the Commission is that it's hard to explain how a terrorist attack could have included pre-positioned explosives that brought down a 47 story concrete and steel building.

The very day after 9/11, the media told us that the plot had been hatched by Osama bin Laden, and soon the FBI showed us photos of the 19 hijackers. Several weeks later, many were puzzled by the BBC report of the apparently fireproof passport of one of the hijackers, found on a sidewalk several blocks from the Twin Towers. Some wondered whether the document had been planted after the BBC reported at least four of the nineteen hijackers had turned up alive and well in Saudi Arabia.

The government's own investigators admit they have no reasonable explanation for what happened to WTC 7. Alas, they did not consider controlled demolition. Regarding WTC7, the FEMA report states "Prior to September 11, 2001, there was little, if any, record of fire-induced collapse of large fire-protected steel buildings."

BRITAIN

There is no ban on Islamic dress in the UK.

GERMANY

At least four German states have gone on to ban teachers from wearing headscarves and in the state of Hesse the ban applies to all civil servants.

RUSSIA

Russia's Supreme Court has overturned a 1997 interior ministry ruling which forbade women from wearing headscarves in passport photos.

ITALY

In September 2004 local politicians in the north of Italy resurrected old laws against the wearing of masks, to ban women from wearing the all-over burqa.

In July 05 the Italian parliament approved anti-terrorist laws which make hiding one's features from the public - including through wearing the burqa - an offence.

BELGIUM

The city of Maaseik, on the Dutch border, has banned the niqab, which covers the whole body except for the eyes.

TURKEY

For the past 80 years Turks have lived in a secular state founded by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, who rejected headscarves as backward-looking in his campaign to secularise Turkish society.

Even so, it is estimated that as many as 65% of Turkish women cover their heads with a scarf.

Nonetheless, scarves are banned in civic spaces, including schools, universities - state or private - and official buildings.

In November 2005 the European Court of Human Rights ruled the ban was legitimate.

FRANCE

A ban on Muslim headscarves and other "conspicuous" religious symbols at state schools was introduced in 2004.

However, headscarves can be worn in Muslim schools, and at university level, where the law on religious signs does not apply.
