Positive Parenting Resources

This past Sunday, I shared several sites and resources on positive parenting during the MamasTimeOut© show.

Positive Parenting includes parenting with discipline. Discipline involves teaching with consistency, rules and consequences, but not physical punishment. Educators are expected to use this form of discipline in the classroom.

Some examples of positive discipline include:

rewards system
taking away privileges
using time-out consistently and appropriate for age level (ie: 1 min per age under 5)

What positive discipline does not include:

spanking, physical punishment
yelling, demeaning a child
emotional abuse

VIRTUAL PARENTING

Five ways to become an Internet parent:

* Talk with your child about their use of the Internet.

* Explore websites and technologies yourself.

* Restrict inappropriate content and consider parental controls such as filtering.

* Encourage open communication with your child.

* Be aware of the potential dangers and know where to report potentially illegal or inappropriate behaviour online.

Four ways to help protect your online child:

* Ensure your child keeps their profile and online friends private.

* Explain how to handle cyber- bullying.

* Ensure your child meets online friends for the first time in the company of a trusted adult.

* Make sure their mobile phone uses a PIN, so when lost or stolen it can't be used to auto- sign into their online profiles.

Two Important Pieces of a Newsletter

I am creating the newsletter for FastWriters, and I wonder what everyone thinks makes an informative newsletter. In a week, I receive several newsletters from business and marketing tips to parenting and home decorating articles. These are the two elements that will bring newsletter success:

1. Titles – The titles and subtitles need to be less than five to seven words and to the point. Do you prefer

“Proposal Tips That Will Secure a Government Bid and Win”

“Top Proposal Tips To Win A Contract”

Think about it because titles are the first thing readers see.

2. Content – The content has to be well written and informative. A tip is if you use Word, put on the readability statistics in the Tool menu. Make sure that the reading level is between 6th to 7th grade, and reading ease is more than 55%.

There are more, but I will reveal them in a future newsletter edition.

How to Avoid a Power Struggle with your Child

The very best way to avoid a power struggle with a child is to use "visioning". What is visioning?

Visioning is the same process that is used prior to going into any activity whereby you want to excel! In other words, let's say you are going to be presenting an idea at a business meeting and you want the idea to be accepted well by the other participants of the meeting. (Before you think I have gone off my rocker because all of a sudden, I am speaking about business meetings and not kids... bear with me - I'm going somewhere with this!)

[By the way, this concept in taught in a much bigger way in many business books I would recommend.]

Educating a generation of less-tech savvy parents will help them keep better track of their kids. It could also give them a feeling of comfort and expertise so they don't feel intimated.

When he picks up bad words, laugh at him. This will make him think he’s cute.

Never give him any spiritual training. Wait until he is twenty-one and then let "him decide for himself".

Avoid the use of "wrong". He may develop a guilt complex. This will condition him to believe later, when he is arrested, that society is against him and he is being persecuted.

Pick up everything he leaves lying around. Do everything for him so that he will be experienced in throwing all responsibility on others.

Take his part against neighbors, teachers, and policemen. They are all prejudiced against your child.

Give the child all the spending money he wants. Never let him earn his own.

Satisfy his every craving for food, drink, and comfort. See that his every sensual desire is gratified.

Let him read any printed material, and listen to any music he can get his hands on. Be careful that the silverware and drinking glasses are sterilized, but let his mind feast on garbage.

This kind of overspending is not good for kids or their parents —because, unless you're in the top income bracket, the only way to give your children everything they want (or everything marketers tell you they should have) is to neglect your own retirement saving. And the message you're sending, meanwhile, is that money grows on trees. Or at least on Mommy and Daddy.

A recent study by Robert Manning, Ph.D., professor of consumer finance at RIT in Rochester, NY, found that parents use credit more freely when buying for their children than when shopping for themselves.

Be skimpy with baby and toddler purchases.

Scale down birthday parties.

You convey your values to your children by doing what you think is right, not by exhausting yourself with a party that breaks your budget.

Pay for less entertainment.

Brace yourself for some whining.
