The world is not coming to an end on December 21, 2012, US space agency NASA insists.

The latest big screen offering from Sony Pictures, 2012, arrives in theatres today.

The $US200 million production about the end of the world is based on internet rumours and myths backed by the Mayan calendar.

The film claims that the end of time will come when an obscure planet - Nibiru - heads toward and collides with Earth.

The planet was supposedly discovered by the Sumerians, according to claims by pseudo-scientists, paranormal activity enthusiasts and internet theorists.

Some websites accuse NASA of concealing the truth on the wayward planet's existence, but the US space agency has denounced such stories as an "internet hoax."

"There is no factual basis for these claims," NASA said in a question-and-answer post on its website.

If such a collision were real "astronomers would have been tracking it for at least the past decade, and it would be visible by now to the naked eye," it added.

The un-surprise move comes after This Is It led the box-office competition with an estimated $21.3 million Friday-Sunday, and upped its five-day worldwide haul to $101 million.

Even in success, though, the film didn't thoroughly dominate Miley Cyrus. Much less Paranormal Activity.

For starters, Jackson's This Is It barely came within $10 million of matching Cyrus' Hannah Montana concert movie's opening weekend record ($31.1 million). Best of Both Worlds, which opened on a Friday, unlike the Wednesday-debuting This Is It, also made more money in its first five days than This Is It: $37.3 million versus $32.5 million.

The new horror movie "Paranormal Activity" could be filling movie studio marketing departments with fear.

Using a campaign of limited showings, social media and word-of-mouth fan buzz, the film has managed to become a breakout hit without the aid of a glitzy marketing campaign -- or even a traditional movie trailer.

According to Variety, the very low-budget film (it reportedly cost $11,000), which played in fewer than 200 theaters, raked in $7.1 million over the weekend -- a record for a limited-release film. The film had an impressive $44,163 per-screen average and placement in the top five of the box office ratings over the weekend.

It has now earned $62.5 million and could hit $100 million. What's next? The Inevitable. According to today's Los Angeles Times, Paramount is "actively considering producing a sequel."

There was blood at the wickets this pre-Halloween, as the corpses of every one of the weekend's new movies littered the lobbies of North American theaters. The Saw torture-porn franchise took the biggest hit, with its sixth installment getting chainsawed by the Paranormal Activity phenomenon. Another horror entry, Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant, was D.O.A. Astro Boy, the third autumn movie based on a kids, pop-culture touchstone, didn't fly; and neither did the aviation bio-pic Amelia, which took off at low altitude and instantly crashed.
