The Egyptians ruled for some time, as did the Mamluks, the Crusaders, Arab Caliphs, and a number of other ancient empires.

But the Palestinians are not on this list. So while the West Bank could technically "return" to Jordanian or British sovereignty, it could not, however, return to Palestinian sovereignty.

Clip Source: blog.camera.org

There is currently no state of Palestine, and no international border between Israel and Judea and Samaria (aka West Bank). The borders and territory of any future Palestinian entity are disputed. However, the NBC Olympics Web Site includes a map showing Judea and Samaria (the West Bank, along with with the Gaza Strip) as part of a country called “Palestine.” Conversely, a map of Israel is shown minus that territory. In other words, NBC mapmakers are playing political arbiters and have awarded the disputed territory to the Palestinians.

Clip Source: www.nbcolympics.com

Palestine

Palestinian demonstrations are routinely put down with excessive force: rocks flung by pre-teens are countered with rubber bullets, tear gas, and – often – live and indiscriminate fire. But when it comes to clamping down on violence emanating from the settler community, a different set of rules apply, and the authorities' reeking hypocrisy is exposed as endemic to the way in which they view the different strands of Israeli society.
Via Philip Weiss

Clip Source: www.guardian.co.uk

Of late, there has been a steady stream of brutal assaults carried out by settlers against their Palestinian neighbours in the West Bank, right under the noses of the lackadaisical army. The phenomenon is, sadly, nothing new; what has brought the story back into the spotlight are the efforts of human rights groups, such as B'Tselem to film the violence and document the shocking reality on the ground – which is why, it seems, the authorities are so keen to clamp down on their activity in the region.

However, the settlers don't confine their vindictive and vicious attacks to Palestinians; they are not averse to attacking their Jewish peers either.

Then another Breaking the Silence group came under attack from settler vigilantes, who doused the participants with boiling water after confronting them in the streets of Hebron and heckling them with cries of "traitor", and other such hostile invective.

Tags: israel, settlements, west bank, palestine, hypocrisy

<clipSource>http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2008/aug/07/israelandthepalestinians.middleeast</clipSource>

Shin Bet extorting ill Palestinians to become informants?

clipped by: jklugman
clipper's remarks: Via Amal A at Improvisations: Arab Woman Progressive Voice

Clip Source: www.haaretz.com

The Shin Bet security service has been trying to coerce ill Palestinians to become informants in exchange for medical treatment, according to an 80-page report released recently by the Israel branch of Physicians for Human Rights.

He managed to evade the Chinese Communist forces, disguised as a soldier and escaping at night. The somber remembrance is a little like what the Palestinians do every year. They call it al-Nakba, or "catastrophe," which marks 1948 when they lost much of their land as the state of Israel was founded.

Here are four reasons such a comparison breaks down.

1) Tibetans don't seek China's destruction, or threaten Western interests.

2) Tibetans haven't launched a campaign of suicide bombings, rockets, or kidnappings.

3) The Tibetan independence movement is neither allied nor co-opted by foreign outsiders like Iran, Al-Qaida, Syria, Hezbollah, or the Muslim Brotherhood.

Tags: <a href="http://clipmarks.com/tags/media/" Is Obama an Israel appeaser?

In part three of his analysis of the Middle East tour of Barack Obama, the Democratic presidential candidate, Al Jazeera's Marwan Bishara debates the rationale behind the senator's visit to Israel/Palestine and what it means for his presidential campaign.

But how does his visit to Sderot square with any solidarity with the decades-long dispossessed, oppressed and occupied Palestinians?

ut he does call for a two-state solution ...

So did Ariel Sharon, the comatose former prime minister of Israel, and George Bush, the US president, as well as every other denier of Palestinian rights.

Look, these are the US political boundaries ... Obama can try to reinvent US diplomacy, but not US diplomats.

Ross is the head of The Washington Institute for Near East Policy, the think-tank arm of the Israeli lobby.

<clipSource>http://english.aljazeera.net/focus/imperium/2008/07/20087245106476924.html</clipSource>
